This is a 1987 Jeep Comanche SporTruck. It is equipped with the AMC 4.0L Engine, Peugeot BA 10/5 5 Speed Manual Transmission, NP231 Transfer Case, Dana 35 Rear Axle and Dana 30 Front Axle. It is the Long Wheelbase configuration with a 7 foot bed. I bought it with 115,000 miles, and in this video series, I plan to restore this truck to the best of my ability.
In this video:
-The fuel pump situation
-Upgraded gauge cluster
-New headliner
-Weatherstipping on exterior windows
-Sanded and reformed rust on seat brackets (off camera)
-Repainted trim pieces and center console (off camera)
-Relocated fuel pump ground (off camera)
-Replaced flasher relay (off camera)
I lost alot of footage for this one. I took the truck to my local auto body shop to have new floors welded in but they denied me service after deeming the vehicle "beyond saving". He said it would be easier to find one with no rust and swap in the drivetrain, but little did he know, these trucks are literally more rare than Ferrari's. I was moderately disappointed to hear this news and it's taken away a large amount of motivation to continue the project. The floors are definitely repairable, this guy just didn't want to do it.
Because of the apocalypse, I've been permanently laid off from my former place of employment and I haven't had an income since April. My dumbass decided it would be an excellent idea to buy this truck, and now I don't really have any money. At the end of the day, I don't need it, I just think it's the most badass truck to ever exist. I'll sell it for $4,000, but nobody ever reads video descriptions anyway so I'm probably gonna end up holding onto it through winter and park my XJ in a storage unit to prevent it from rusting any further.
For the next episode, I plan on replacing the thermostat and various other cooling system components because the temperature gauge never reads above 1/4 up leading me to believe either the thermostat or sending unit is bad.

I laughed at the whole commentary at the end. Sadly for Chevy’s they haven’t built an offroad truck since that Comanche was made, it probably could outwheel them and their IFS. Wish AMC would have stuck the 258 in the 86 instead of that garbage GM 2.8. I had an 86 long with the 2.8 and an 88 short renix 4.0. GM V6 was garbage

What is the gauge cluster for originally, where can I find one
@WAEMIDIV
@WAEMIDIV 2 жыл бұрын
The tachometer clusters are from similar era Cherokees or Comanches with a higher trim level/ that are better optioned. You can take a cluster from an XJ or MJ and swap it in easily. The interchange years are 84-86, 87-90, 91-96 I believe If your current cluster does not have any gauges (only warning lights) you will need to swap the sensors for the temperature and oil pressure sending units

Did u try rotating the headlight knob to see if the lights came on. Mine is really rare cause it's he metric Tn option with a rear frame with heavier axles with a Dana 44 rear end with TracLok and rare at 2240 lb load rating. Only made a small number of them.

Dude.. I own a Jeep Comanche 4x4 Sportruck that I purchased back in 1987 from a Dealership! Dark blue with Silver decals. 2.5 engine with a 5 speed manual transmission! I STILL have it and I take it camping all the time. Original engine with 254000 miles on it. It was an Original AMC Jeep before they sold the name to Chrysler. Since then they are shit. I still have Guy’s telling me if I want to sell it, Call them …

Typical rattle when starting not a lifter. The rockers and push rods need replacement after but 150 thousand miles. Easy and cheap. Amazon caries a compete kit.

I know its a two year late comment but I've had people flash highbeams at me in my xj when we were both driving down a slight valley. If our halogens are slighty out of alignment the and the angle of oncoming traffic is just right the reflectors focus to appear as being in high beam operation. I always get a giggle when they jerk the wheel after I actually switch to the highbeams.

Best thing for those dome lights is to check if you have power coming in and if you do its gonna be the mechanism in the light itself yiu have to push them up or down to turn them on, and if the copper contacts are corroded then they'll not work

Question, for the cluster did you have to install different wiring for the tachometer or did you just use the original cluster wiring that came with the truck? I’m trying to do the swap myself

There are no additional wires needed for the tachometer, it just plugs in and works

I'm pretty sure AMC bought those engines from GM. I'm in the South, so my '86 is solid (Okay, new floor pans). Supposedly AMC made less than 40 of my exact configuration. My other truck is a '96 GMC and I'd never look down on you.

The early 2.8L LR2 V6, yes, but the AMC 4.0L I6 is AMC designed with blueprints based on the Jeep 4.2L from as early as the 1960s.
