Brief update per request on another reply: I'm still very pleased with the unit. No major changes from my initial impressions as of right now. I'll likely be putting up another video within the next couple of weeks once I get my frontrunner rack and iKamper Mini bolted on top. I did do a "spray test" earlier today, with a typical garden hose jet along all seams. I did get some "splash" type water intrusion, but based on the pattern and location of the splashes it looked to be through the side seams in the tailgate before it meets the cap, and not the SmartCap itself. I blasted all windows, joints, and the vent up top, and had no pooled water inside. I expect zero water intrusion as a result of rainfall or snow melt.

The Ikamper mini is an awesome tent however since the bed cap is the same hight as the roof have you thought about checking the GFC super light tent? You would same money because it's half the price of the Ikamper which I'm sure wouldn't be hard to sell you would save weight and have better stream lining and be less top heavy. Just a thought. This was a great video 👍

Thanks for the comment! I did look in to the GFC, and liked what I saw, but it's too long for my application at 90 inches. With just a 60 inch bed, I'd have a significant amount of overhang on the cab, which would take up real estate from my eventual over the cab rack, where I will store my solar panels, fuel, and various other weatherproof cargo when out in the field. Despite its height, the Skycamp Mini is the perfect tent for my specific vision and application. I do appreciate the input. Again, GFC makes excellent products, but this time around it just wasn't the piece of gear that worked the best for me.

@@TerraOutdoors Check out the CVT mount hood tent. It’s a hard clam shell that’s a little shorter. I’m 6’1" and I fit perfectly in it.

Thanks for the suggestion FatherTime! While I do dig CVT products (my last tent and awning setup was CVT), and I did consider the new Mt. Hood as well, it would have led to the same issue as the GFC tent mentioned above. The bed on the Gladiator is very short, so I had to keep the tent length to less than 60 inches in order to avoid overhang on the cab or off of the rear. For that reason, the Skycamp Mini was the perfect balance of weight, ease of setup, and physical dimensions (internal and external). At nearly 6'5", I still have a few inches to spare in the Mini, without it taking up real estate from my eventual over-the-cab rack.

@@TerraOutdoors Right on that makes sense, yeah you've got very little real estate up there on top of the gladiator shell. Once again thanks for the quick and great response! Best wishes and happy holidays...

The video section to watch begins at ~9:20 -> 10:40. At that point, the view is forward looking. Top perspective from the rear of the canopy. The Jeep roof is in front (towards the visible roadway). At the time frame, the fellow's hand is touching the roof top vent. The underside, rear edge appears to me to show the ventilation slot. As you watch the video it certainly appears as if the underside edge of the rear of that structure is the ventilation section. The fellow slips his fingers within and describes some sort of breathable 'fabric' filtration within. He surmises it keeps dust and junk out of working it's way into the canopy. Comments it somehow keeps rain out as well, though he has not yet figured out how that works. As I look at it, that position of the vent does not make sense to pressurize the inside of the canopy? 🤔 That would require "laminar airflow"; which requires one hell of a speed of movement. Especially considering neither the 'vent' nor the canopy roof are not aerofoil shaped. Warp factor 6, I guess???? Helluva Jeep for that!!! Unless the front side has the same ventilation with some form of mechanical, 'wind pressure' activated movable flap which would seal the rearward edge vent to exclusively permit the canopy 'pressurization' effect while driving? That would be pretty impressive to design. 🤔 Has me wondering. Would be good to see a closer view... Unless, of course, the fellow misassembled the roof top orienting it backwards? 🤔 If the vent is supposed to be located close to the Jeep's roof; instead of toward the rear of the canopy? Hmmmm... That seems to be more likely. I cannot imagine the canopy manufacturer being that proficient at engineering a complicated roof top ventilation system????
@TerraOutdoors

I'm not sure if there's a specific question wrapped up in here to be addressed! There are some talking points though. I don't understand the vent, I just know what it was described as by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to throw around to sacrifice the roof panel by pulling it apart in the name of science. 😅 I will say however that over 2 years later, it has yet to leak. In terms of the roof panel, it is installed correctly. You can also see that the position on the manufacturer's page matches mine.

How do the five separate pieces connect to each other? Is it something that clamps down on the seals between the parts? One one thing I was surprised to see was that there were no screens on the vent windows... also I wish they had a lock system that would incorporate with an electron a key fob. Thanks for the great video, quality content...
@TerraOutdoors
@TerraOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
The roof is the main panel, and the rest of the components attach to it. The side panels connect to the top by slotting in to place with tension (I tapped them in to place with a rubber mallet) and fastening hardware. The front and rear flanges have hardware all around the perimeter that attach them to the roof and side panels. It would be nice if they had an option for screens. I was a bit surprised at that myself. Not a huge issue for me personally, but I know it would be for some people. Also, an electronic latch certainly would be nice! Glad you enjoyed! @TerraOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
I looked at AluCab as well. I honestly don't think that you can go wrong with any of the current steel/aluminum offerings (RSI, RLD, AluCab). For me personally, it boiled down to the modularity and aesthetics of the RSI. As of right now, based off of what I have seen and read, I cannot recommend A.R.E. (CX Classic/HD are both available), which is unfortunate because their products have been fantastic on all other models that I have seen. It sounds like they have some kinks to work out on the Gladiator offering, particularly with paint matching. Typically I'm all about function over form, but if I can have both, especially on a piece that is going to drastically change the way that my rig looks, I'll opt for that route. For me personally, RSI checked all of the right boxes.

What did you think of the assembly and installation? How do you think all of the gaps turned out? The finish is not powder coat, it is paint. Looking at one of these for my Colorado. Also looking at the RLD cap.
@TerraOutdoors
@TerraOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, yeah I found that out about the paint after some pinstriping on a trip I took after this. Not a huge deal really. Assembly and install weren't bad at all. I did it solo on my garage floor in about 3 hours taking my time. The cap is an easy two person lift (in my opinion). The front and rear flanges were a little frustrating; trying to balance the panel leaning against my body while reaching over to install/tighten hardware, but I've definitely done worse projects before. I was honestly very surprised with just how tight the gaps are...rather, the lack thereof. There honestly aren't any that I (or pressurized water) have found just yet. Just some spray through the sides of the tailgate. Once I tightened everything down and mounted it, I couldn't distinguish it from a one-piece cap. RSI's weather seals seem phenomenal so far.

@raymondroberts4910 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely looks like a quality piece. It does seem to be a bit short for the bed though. Like maybe if it was 2 or 3 inches longer overall, you might not have as big of a gap between the bed and cap. Maybe even have better luck with that gasket seal over the tailgate. I hope it fits your plans and excursions. Enjoy your adventures.
@TerraOutdoors
@TerraOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Raymond! Thanks for the comment. I haven't watched this video all the way through in some time...but I don't recall mentioning a big gap between the bed and the cap? If anything, I think I said it was *too* tight of a fit. I've gotten used to just popping the tailgate and the window at the same time though--problem solved. Or are you referring to the gap between the front of the cap and the rear of the cab? If so, you definitely want that gap there, because if you get flexy, you're going to have a bad time with a steel cap contacting your fiberglass top. Even so, it's a pretty tight squeeze. Maybe 1.5"? I personally have no qualms with its dimensions. I actually plan on putting out a final "long-term" video on this to finish off my review. I'm still absolutely loving this thing. Happy adventuring!

Thanks! It's more than adequate for me personally. I'm definitely not hurting for space on trips. Regarding bikes, to be honest, I haven't owned one in probably 20 years, so I can't say. I would say the width is there, but the height would depend on the bike itself, or whether or not you could remove the wheels. The roof is pretty much flush with the cab, so there is a good bit of vertical space!

Great review, I've been considering getting one of these for a bit. they look the best out of all the other cabs out there. Have you notice any dropping on your suspension? I'm assuming that there is some due to the weight of the cab, have you upgraded your suspension? Thanks for the time and awesome video, cheers
@TerraOutdoors
@TerraOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Appreciate it! Thanks for the kind words. My suspension absolutely did drop. It was pretty bad when fully loaded up on stock suspension. The body roll was excessive. The Rubicon stock suspension is notoriously soft, and this was exacerbated by the extra weight. On trips, at highway speed, I would occasionally get dangerous sway/wallowing after hitting a bump. I recently did upgrade my suspension and it was a complete success. No more issues, and it rides better now fully loaded than it did when it was stock and unloaded. I didn't realize how bad it was until I made the swap. I have long-term and final impressions videos of the RSI up on my channel, as well as an install of my new suspension if you're interested. curious if you've added any additional seals along the tailgate to help with dust/water coming in along there?
@TerraOutdoors
@TerraOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Nope! The only intrusion I've had is seemingly through the gaps in the tailgate itself, not through where the shell meets the tailgate. The rearmost inch or so of the bed got dusty after a couple hundred miles of trail through Arkansas, but that was about it. I've had no issues with water. I imagine it'd be easy to slap on a couple of thin adhesive gaskets to improve the seal if you're having issues, but I personally haven't had a need to.

I did lose a little bit--somewhere between 1/4" and 1/2" depending on what surface I'm parked on. I had about 1/2" of rake though, so it actually got me closer to level. I can't recall where I saw the weight listed, but I remember seeing it at around 175 pounds. That feels about right. Right now, the cap is in an extended pre-order phase (as manufacturing ramps up I assume) and is $3,695, per the manufacturer site. They're offering free shipping until the pre-order period ends, which saves an extra $150 or so. It's definitely costly, but I'm very pleased with it.

@@michaelgriffith2762 I'd be very interested to see what that solution is. We had a bit of winter weather down here a couple of weeks back. Freezing rain was a factor. Granted, I don't expect much of anything to function well in freezing rain--but the latches sometimes refuse to pop even if it's simply cold. They would need a bit if extra motivation, by either striking the latch or repeatedly pressing the button. I noticed that it would start happening in the mid 20s (F) or so. Truthfully, I think that I would have preferred a simple rotary lock. If RSI were to offer a replacement kit, I would probably make the change.

Front/rear lockers from the factory, better tire clearances, one of the deepest aftermarkets in the industry, and one of the best communities aren't bad selling points either. @TerraOutdoors

There has to be some type of gap in order to keep the two components from rubbing and to allow for flex. I suppose some type of weather stripping could be run around the perimeter to address that issue from an aesthetic standpoint, but physically moving the cap any closer to the rear of the cab would undoubtedly result in damage to one or both pieces.

It's still a fantastic cap, and honestly I could probably easily come up with a window storage open that works just as well.

A year later, and it still doesn't both me that much. I've gotten a bit of dust intrusion after hours of high speed on dirt roads/trails, but nothing major. I may do that in the future, but it's really not a big concern.

@@TerraOutdoors That's awesome! How are your bolts holding up. I saw another review where they gather some surface rust. This just looks like a solid kit. I really would like to get one of these for my 2016 Ram 1500 Limited.

For sure! Glad you enjoyed it. I'm actually planning on putting together one last update for my long term impressions soon with all of the pros and cons that I've come across. I haven't had issues with any of the bolts rusting. The only thing of note is that the assembly bolts on the inside did loosen up significantly, which I didn't notice until about 2 or 3 months of ownership. I re-torqued everything, and have had no issues since. I check them every couple of months just to be safe. Aside from that, this thing has been bulletproof, and has taken hundreds of pounds of weight up top across thousands of miles and some pretty sketchy angles. I'm very happy with it.

Appreciate it. I can't wait to get the parts in and bolted up myself! I haven't been too active on IG lately, but I do plan to start posting again once the build is (nearly) complete. It's elevateexpeditions. Thanks for checking me out!

Thanks! You're definitely not wrong in that though. For a piece this crucial, I wanted it to be a (cost aside) no regrets buy once and cry once type of purchase. I'd have hated to get a different cap, plan all of this out, start moving stuff up top, then realize that it doesn't work after all. So I bit the bullet up front, and I'm honestly glad that I did.

I'll take that as constructive criticism? Haha. These first couple of videos were the first ones that I've ever done, and public speaking is way out of my comfort zone. It's been a learning experience, but if you watch later videos you'll notice significantly fewer "um"s. I'm working on getting better about it with each one! Thanks for checking it out!
