This video is great, can't thank you enough. I have a 2006 Cherokee with 83,000 miles which would sometimes not shift from 1st to 2nd. All the lights PRND would all illuminate at same time and check engine light would come on. I took it to the jeep dealership who of course wanted to look at it further and probably charge me over $500 for a new shifter and $300 for labor ($800). After doing my own research I realized it was likely the shifter issue as described in this video. I followed the video step by step and spent 3 hours this afternoon taking out the console, etc. I purchased electric solution cleaner and sure enough, the lines between the spaces were clearly visible. After cleaning the graphite streaks I put everything back together. I then cleared the code and took the jeep for a drive. Sure enough it ran perfectly and transmission shifted smoothly. Thanks to this great video I saved myself at least $500

My 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee check engine light came on with codes P0700 and U0404. With some online research I narrowed it down to the ESM, which either needed cleaned or replaced. I used your video to try cleaning it. There was a significant amount of graphite trails going across the gaps, so I cleaned the whole thing. I put it back together and reconnected the battery. The CEL stayed on for a few minutes, then shut off on its own. Test drive went great. No issues after ten minutes, so this initially looks like a success. Thank you so much for posting this video. I would have had no clue how to do this and would have paid $1000+ for a mechanic to replace. Thank you!

Just out of interest: How many miles did the jeep have when it occured? I have one with only around 60.000km / 40.000miles on it: And have the problem, but it seems early for me to have the graphite smear already, hence the question.

Just a quick thank you for taking the time to make this video. My '07 Jeep GC shifting started to go a bit wonky by locking into a low gear and all shift positions boxed out. Could clear it with a stop, shift to park and then back to into D but didn't want to push it to a complete failure. With a little research I came across your video. Nothing was left out and all worked well. Especially appreciated the detail on when to be careful - my track record is to usually damage one or two tabs. Much appreciated and thanks again.

Thank you very much for this U-Tube Post. I was having daily problems with my 2007 Laredo going into limp mode. Why this is not a recall is beyond understanding! The dealer wants your money on this one. I followed these instructions, watching the Video. This is a great Video! This saved me $850.00. The Guy at AutoZone, who worked for Chrysler for 7 years said he did many of these, cleaning the traces on the control board may fix it. He said it was easy. I googled and found this video . I disassembled as instructed above on the 2007 Laredo. Everything came apart as in the Video. The hardest part was the chrome piece under the knob twisting it the correct direction to get it off. You need the correct tool to unscrew the assembly, which you can get at any tool supply. Lightly rubbing with a pencil eraser removed the carbon on the traces, and on the blanks between them. I followed up with rubbing alcohol on Q-tips to clean. This worked like a charm! The Engine light went out after 2 days, and has stayed off. I think the Jeep is performing better. Thanks again! PCR

Many thanks for this. Been getting a few transmission related error codes recently and ‘juddery’ gear changes, so I did this yesterday. Your video is great. I didn’t replace the two screws holding the 4WD thing in place. Will use some fixing tape so I don’t have to remove the entire console next time. It was good to recover two lost pens and numerous old coins though, that had fallen in through where the parking break gap is, and give it all a vacuum. When I put the ESM back over the gear stick I forgot to feed it through the white plastic hole first (that’s underneath). Oops. All fitted back in now. Will take it for a run this morning to see what’s changed :)

Good job on the video, it sure made the job a lot easier! Thank you. 2006 Jeep Commander AWD. This procedure saved a ton of money and took only a bout a half an hour to accomplish. The vehicle would sometimes not shift out of second gear, the check engine light illuminated and stayed on and it was showing about 7 transmission faults when the codes were checked. Removed the module and cleaned the circuit strip as suggested. It was very dirty and a lot of carbon. Two weeks after the procedure everything continues to be working as it was supposed to and all codes are cleared. Thanks a bunch. Great fix.

Chad Greene Well, now for the rest of the story. Turned out that the "fix" only lasted a few weeks and then back to limp mode. Took it in to the shop and found some leaking fluid lines and a rear seal. Not enough to lose much fluid but enough to change the fluid pressure. Replaced the lines and seal and no subsequent issues. So far no additional issues for several months.

I need to add to this stream as this is a huge liability issue for the manufacturer. First of all, thank you for your information video...I spent the day taking your suggestions and they helped tremendously. My vehicle went from performing hazardous and cautionary for accident pron to being safe . Forget the recall, the manufacturer should have plenty of information on this and they are just weighing the cost hoping their insurance covers them...this is a huge class action waiting to happen with punitive implications . I am sure they monitor all of these sights so I am sure they are on notice of the liability and their insurance company should be also. i will FIND OUT WHO THEY ARE INSURED with AND PUT THEM ON NOTICE AS WELL .. i will send a formal letter just in case they hope to fly under the radar..... Such an easy fix thanks to your knowledge and the manufacturer has remained silent for years allowing their dealerships to charge money for their incompetence and negligence!!!

I did it once last year and there was still no symptoms 25,000km later. I did it again as a preventative measure this year while making this video so I really don't know how long one cleaning would actually last. I consider once a year well worth it for myself though. It will likely depend on how bad the streaking is on the circuit board gaps and if you can be patient and clean it all very well.

If you have not done so already get the code/s read from a scan tool to make sure it is indeed the ESM before you replace the unit. My jeep would illuminate the check engine light as it "jumped" out of gear and lit up all the [P][R][N][D]but it didn't ever go into limp mode that I can recall. The circuit board is outsource in the ESM anyway so if the ESM part number matches you'll likely same some money with an aftermarket one if it exists.

Yes it can certainly be an occasional problem. Mine would often happen on the highway when cruise control was on. It would randomly act like it was in neutral and my gear indicator would look like this: [P][R][N][D]. Shutting down and restarting often "reboots" things for a short time and then the problem returns. As for the 3.7 I'm not sure. You'd have to open it up to see what lies within, but I'm guessing it is similar if not sthe ame same setup in there.

It is best to disconnect the battery terminal. There could be a spike that damages the module when you install it if it's not and all your work and money will lost. Battery terminals can be really frustrating. Mine took a long time the first time I did this.

Experienced fail-safe mode for my 2005 Grand Cherokee LTD Hemi QDII tranny this weekend (stays in 3rd gear). First thing I did was check transmission fluid and it was a quart low but after topping off, it did not correct the shifting problem. Went to AutoZone for code scan and was getting 0705 (transmission control module and related). I was 1.5 hrs from my destination on a Sunday (holiday weekend at that) so I kept it under 50mph for the remaining distance (no where near red-line for a Hemi). Along the way, we stopped at a convenience store and upon restart, the tranny went back to normal... for about a mile. It then reverted to fail-safe. UGH! When I got home and did my usual research digging, I found this video Chad Greene posted. I did the entire procedure shown in his video. The first two test drives after reassembly, the tranny would again start out in 3rd gear. I was getting disheartened at the thought of shelling out extraordinary amounts of stealership diagnosis money but went for a 3rd test drive (each test drive = 1 engine cycle, meaning the vehicle was shut off and restarted.) Since that 3rd test, it has operated normally which includes 3 engine cycles so far at city and highway speeds, smooth and bumpy roads. So far so good (45 miles since last fail-safe mode). I still have a check engine light, but it's probably related to the continuity/communication failures after disconnecting the wire bundles from the ESM. I should note that I could not perceive any graphite lines or streaks in the gaps on the circuit board but cleaned the whole thing anyway with elec contact cleaner sprayed onto a cotton swab. There was a lot of black residue on the swabs (I used 4 of them). It makes me wonder how many other circuit boards need cleaning to prevent thousands of dollars in unneeded repair costs.

Back whenI had slot cars, we used a soft pencil eraser to clan the contacts. I bet it would also work good here.
@alfredomarquez97777 жыл бұрын
That would be a BAD idea: Look, when you cleaned those slot cars, you were removing a layer of oxidized copper or brass, for which an eraser is good. BUT,here you are dealing with delicate carbon coated traces, If you use an eraser most probably you are going to remove too much of the conductive trace, destroying it.The BEST cleaner of all them is something called "Cramolin" (tm), made by CAIG Labs. That substance is like a red colored oily liquid that removes ALL oxides from contacts WITHOUT removing the coated trace material. You just put a little on a cotton swab and gently rub all contacts, that will perform the very best cleaning on electronic contacts.

Hi, thanks for the video. I've done this in 2011 as per jeepforum instructions which are the same you put in here. No problem since but as you said maybe doing it as a preventative measure is worth it.

Nice video. My 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo is starting give the check engine light. And the code that came up had to do with TCM. I took the outer chrome bezel off TCM base to check electrical plug and give it a wiggle and it took the check engine light off. So I will go ahead and do the take apart to do do the cleaning of the board. Hopefullly this was my only issue for the check engine light. Thanks for a good video on this.

What’s it mean when the vehicle shifts but the vehicle doesn’t move in reverse or drive? Code P0841 and P0944

You should probably note the years that this helps. The 08' does not have this type of module could be even after 08'. Had some shifting problems, pulled everything apart to find the esm is some white little box deeper inside the shifting assembly. So fyi to anyone else with an 08' and above.

Hi Chad! , I try to clean my ESM but didn't work, so I ordered a new one on ebay, I change it today but I have the same problem, do I need to change the entire console? or do I need to buy it at the dealer? please advise,

Yes intermitting on our 2006 Commander and under investigation. We are installing independend temperature sensors to have a real reading. Good extra ground cable from battery minus to engine is worth an extra #6 high flex wire.
