I had that same problem. A new cowl is over $350 so what I did was I put black duct tape along the edge of the cowl where it meets the windshield! Works great and hardly noticeable, and the best part is no more annoying noise!

That noise is terrible. I did that and the sun dried out the tape and was a pain to remove. Mine was all broken up anyway so I wanted to replace anyway. I did a Jeep with silicone and worked ok but very messy to do. Also did one with a thin foam strip with one sided 3M tape and worked very well also. Glad you got it resolved I hated that noise. Thanks

Thank you so much for taking the time to highlight this issue and where the noise is actually coming from and for making the video. I had suspected it was the cowl because mine is deformed and sitting off windshield, in some areas close to an 1" off. A lifesaver for me. If there's one thing that can send me over the edge, it's a consistent unwanted and intrusive noise.

Jus this today on wife's 2015 GC. I did purchase the part since the area where the rubber meets the windshield was pretty brittle. Couple of things I did differently was I didnt need to pry the wiper arms with a pry tool. Just lift the portion of the arm as you would to change the wiper blade. This releases the tension and the entire arm comes off easily. Other item was I did remove and install new one through the engine bay area as I did not want to chance scratching windshield with the new one as there are metal clips on the cowl. I did install in sunlight as I wanted the rubber that meets the windshield to expand. No buckles what so ever. Thanks for posting and sorry to hear about the accident.

For anyone wondering if the much cheaper right-hand drive 55079199AH version can be used instead of the $250+ 55079197AH part...it's not a direct replacement, according to my research. The windshield wipers are opposite, between left & right-hand drive Grand Cherokees, so the holes in the cowl would be on the opposite sides. Now...could you drill holes in the RHD part for LHD wipers? Seems like you could. The part appears symmetrical. You'd have to cover the RHD wiper holes. And the vent would be on the opposite side, meaning the wiper motor and everything else on the driver's side firewall would be exposed to water from rain or washes. I guess you could cover that vent, also, and make one on the passenger side. Is all that worth saving $150+, and would it be an odd thing to have to explain when you sell or trade in the vehicle?

@ExtremDIY3 жыл бұрын
Hello I love the look and the braking... but there is a grinding feel to them and the front rotors were replaced and still feel the grinding. I spoke to my old school mechanic and mentioned that the pads are very inexpensive and if I change the pads it should solve the issue. I will replace them and post it cause even though it stops much better than the factory ones, its annoying to feel the grinding. He told be I need better ceramic pads. I did this in my previous SUV and worked amazing but it was a different brand brakes. If that works you can buy just the rotors cause they look nice and buy the pads from the local auto parts of premium quality. Keep you posted.

Hello the gap was better after installing the new one but not 100% but the noise was gone. Looks like a design defect on these cowls. @southfloridamtb84253 жыл бұрын
Hello not sure if I understand. Are you getting water inside the car? This plastic will not seal the windshield from water. If water is coming into the car you might have to check different things. If the windshield was replaced before they could had missed some silicone and water is coming through there. Also if you have a sunroof, there is a water pipe goes through the car that sometimes gets clauged and water comes in the car. That piece that I removed wont affect the water into the car. Let me know if you find the problem. Thank you

@karztoolz3789 Жыл бұрын
Hello I have seen that. I am in south Florida and get no snow here but I am not too far from the ocean so when I purchase any used car I inspect it for areas where rust can grow. I wash it if need and use spray undercoat on the weak areas like welds to avoid any future issues.

Awesome video thank you! I have this same noise and it only started after getting my windshield replaced. Do you think they may have damaged the cowl during replacement?
@marcotarafa99233 жыл бұрын
Hello its possible. If your cowl is not broken or brittle on the rubber piece try to heat up on the parts that are sticking out from the windshield and see if it helps. Just be careful with the heat gun and not to deform it. Also check both ends of the rubber piece on the side to make sure its glued to the fenders. It comes with a double sided take so if its old then it wont stick. You can replace the tape of maybe if your are brave put silicone. These pieces were poorly designed and even new comes a bit deformed. I tried putting silicone on my friends Jeep and it worked ok but was extremely messy and time consuming. Hope it helps Thank you

@@ExtremDIY Thank you! Evidently, there is also a metal component that is also called Cowl Panel and they sent that one, but I just returned it and will get the correct one. This time, I'm ordering via phone conversation

Hello it would drive me crazy. If you dont want to spend the money on the new cowl I have seen people use tape. I siliconed my sons when he had his Jeep with the same issue and it worked. I changed mine cause it was already breaking apart and looked ugly. I hate that they charge so much for a part that is their fault in the design and the customers have to pay for their mistakes. If you resolve the issue with a quick fix let me know of post it so others can do the same. Thank you

been looking for this problem for a year. my 2012 has the same issue. thanks for the fix! can you do a video of the rain sensor? my truck's wipers dont sense the rain anymore. i think its a sensor issue but dont know where to find the part (what its actual name is) or where its located in the car.

@ExtremDIY2 жыл бұрын
I got it at the dealer here is the part number for mine. 55079197ah 2015 Grand Cherokee just make sure you give them the VIN number. The part changed after I think like 2019 or so I dont remember now. Just to make sure they get you the correct one. I have seen some owners add black tape or even an insert between the windshield and the rubber piece and its much cheaper. I replaced mine because it was broken already in some areas.

Will that noice crack the widow? I have that issue in my 2020 dodge journey suggestions?
@ExtremDIY2 жыл бұрын
Hello it wont crack the windshield. Does the car have any warranty? You can put a thin foam with adhesive between the windshield and rubber and it might do the job for you. I did one Jeep with silicone but didnt stick well. You can also put tape as a quick repair before replacing it. Hope it helps
@swchannel61472 жыл бұрын
Yes, eventually it will become cracked but only after you punch it from being frustrated with the wind nose

I feel you I was going nuts with it too. I put duck tape at first but the sun dried it up and then it was a pain to remove the glue so I decided to buy the darn thing. It was worth it after to be able to enjoy the silence.

It sure would be nice if that cowl wasn’t almost 300 dollars, plus almost 200 dollars shipping. I have this problem in my wife’s jeep and she is very diligent to remind me that it “does that thing” every time it “does that thing.”

Hello no I dont think so its a separate piece. If you have a water leak it can be different thing like AC or the sunroof line. Hope you find the issue. Thank you

Lol oh yeah its rediculous how they design this crap. If you get next to a newer one like 2017 and up you will see its the same Jeep but different cowl. They fixed the issue but doesnt fit the earlier models I was told.

That sucks that a brand new one wouldn't fit tightly and obviously made so cheaply. What the hay is wrong with the order of the era? - everything you buy now days is defective and made soooo cheaply. So irritating. Take me back to days when craftsmanship was paramount

Hello its a struggle I fight with all the time with all these parts. I believe the newer version on the 2017 and up looks like they made a mayor improvement on the design but as I was told it wont fit 2016 and less models. Yes its sad that the new one still has a small gap. Lets hope for the best at least its not making the nasty sound any longer. thank you

@@ExtremDIY if you don't mind me asking, where did you get that one from? I'm having a time trying to get my hands on it....where they don't want to charge me $230 just to ship it. SMH
@ExtremDIY3 жыл бұрын
Actually this one was given as a gift but my friend works at the Ford dealer and he just ordered for me. Not sure if it was from the Jeep dealer were he was working prior or a local distributor. I was looking around before and my local dealer wanted like $255 for the piece here is South Florida which I think is the retail price for the piece. I have a link there under the video its like $206 dollars for the part but not sure on the shipping cost. Thank you hope you find it at a good price.
@richardr58883 жыл бұрын
@@ExtremDIY Thanks for the video. Mine isn't making noise YET, but it is starting to separate and it has severely faded (I'm also in South Florida). I know it's only a matter of time before the cracking starts even though I've tried different protectants. I've seen several down here that have started cracking and it's not pretty. As far as the newer ones, yes they are different and one of the differences is the screen portion has a better design. I can't tell you how many small leaves get stuck under the plastic grill that covers the mesh and its a chore to get them out. I have a new hate for ficus trees! Speaking of heat, be prepared for the rubber on your volume knob to start separating and start feeling gooey. This also happens a lot and they don't make replacement knobs- you have to buy the whole panel which is ridiculous. Or you can buy cheap aluminum knob overlays on Amazon or ebay and call it a day. I love my Jeep, but FCA makes for tough love. It's been over a month and I'm still waiting for my replacement headrest to come into the dealer. The active headrest deployed while I was driving and scared the crap out of me. It's yet another design issue. The cheap plastic design that holds the locking pin can get brittle (I'm thinking another heat issue) and crack releasing the headrest forward rapidly. No recall yet, but it's so common there is a TSB for the dealer to replace it at no charge. I'm not bashing Jeep, I still love mine, it's just stuff you have to accept if you love it that much.

@@richardr5888 Hello you are welcome. You know I remember someone from parts department mentioning a remedy to this issue kind of like a kit they sell to put over or under the rubber part. They never gave me a part number but could be an option to ask about. I could be wrong but I thought I understood he said that. I have a black olive tree next to my car so yes I do feel the pain with the leaves. I even purchased a battery blower so I can use it almost every day to blow the driveway and the car.
