Jeep Liberty 3.7L P0300 Multiple Cylinder Misfire

My sister has a 2006 Jeep Liberty with a 3.7 Liter engine and had an issue. She had it put on a computer for testing and got an error code P0300. She paid $350 for a garage to put on 2 new coils that didn't fix the problem. I diagnosed it down to a $36 oxygen sensor and that fixed the problem.

Found this video as a troubleshooting search. Had multiple misfire code and cylinder 4 misfire code. Did usual coil pack and plugs. Cleared code. Came back during driving relearn. Replaced the upstream o2 sensor. ( pain in butt to unplug and plug back in connection. Drove 50 miles....all in the green. No dtc's Thank you! Never would have thought...you rock!

I had the same problem and changed plugs and coils. The same issue came back. I keep the hand held scanner on data out put settings and noticed one of the o2 sensors was putting out unsteady voltage readings. I changed the same o2 sensor as this video showed and have no more misfires. Thank you for pointing this out. It lead me in the right direction . Problem solved.

I watched this video after watching several others and after replacing the Spark Plugs, Crank Shaft position sensor, Camshaft position sensor and Map sensor, the code P0300 still came up. I saw your video and changed out Both Up Stream O2 sensors. WOO HOO!! the Problem was solved! thanks for videoing that.

Ran into many issues with my 02 liberty 3.7 L. Multiple misfires, running rough, etc. AUTEL reader would show numerous codes. I bought it with 170K on a supposedly "newly rebuilt" 🤔 motor. I have put 10K on it. I love driving it but geeze it's been an adventure ! Have replaced all O2 sensors, water pump twice, new brakes front and rear, tires, etc.. etc. It has always had the ticking noise but I noticed the past week a tapping sound coming from the drivers side valve cover. Like someone randomly hitting it with a hammer. I have been chasing the dreaded CEL light on and or flashing on for 6 months. I am pretty positive after watching KZbin videos that my rocker arm has fell off ! Mechanic today said he keeps plenty of these rockers in stock as he has done plenty. Estimate is $300, which I will gladly pay. Used vehicle prices are outrageous ! And Chrysler should have taken care of this very known issue. 🙄 . Here's hoping for the best results next week. 🤞

Bad news ..... Head gasket blown 🤪. Replaced with good used motor, parts and labor $3,100.00. Still beats the costs of a used vehicle, what with the outrageous prices nowadays. At least I know what I have now.

so i am having the same issue with my 05 liberty. it was throwing multiple codes, including random misfire code and i replaced 2 upstream 02 sensors and the codes went away and it became drivable. now, it’s throwing the same code again. random multiple misfire… i took it too a shop when the codes first popped up and they charged me $300+ just to only say it was the battery. put in a new battery and it still showed the same codes and was still misfiring. so that’s when i replaced the 02 sensors and i replaced the alternator. now i’m here with the random misfire code once again.

Not sure my friend. I really am not a car guy. I just made and posted this video to help point others in the right direction. It is quite possible to have a bad sensor again. They are quite fragile. Especially if you have an engine that is not running well. If the engine is burning oil it could easily foul an O2 sensor in a short time.

The jeep liberties have great motors but the sensors are the worst! Mine misfired bad when I first got it and my fix was replacing the cam and crank shaft sensors. Basically if a sensor goes bad, any sensor related to the motor running, it will misfire.

So this was the upstream O2 you replaced? How many O2 sensors on 3.7l. I have been trying to fix a random misfire at idle for months on my liberty (p0351/2/3. changed plugs/coils.injectors/fuel pump/filter no luck, still random misfires but no more codes. Finally learnt about fuel trims short trims are always plus or minus a few % BUT my long term fuel trims are always -20+ so must be running too rich, plus there is smell of exhaust fumes when driving so guessing its the cat or exhaust leak. Could it be just O2? Good video anyway :)

Probably not. If it is only missing on one cylinder. #6 only then it is probably a valve issue.

It can jump timing on one side by a couple of teeth and it will cause that because that engine has a separate chain for each side and a chain in the center so 3 timing chains one engine

My experience would tell me to replace the one on the drivers side that is right by the engine.. The one BEFORE the catalytic converter.. But experience also tells me that I would replace both since they generally go out close in time.. The one after the catalytic converter is less important and does not control the engine like the first 2..

I'm having simular issues. I replaced all my coils and plugs. Question about how it was running before, because I get the same stories on the rocker arm problem. Before you replaced the O2 sensor did the engine knock really bad.

Found my issue. Replaced the O2 sensors and still had same issue. Decided to check the rockers, and while doing so I noticed the timing was off. Went to reset the timing and heard something metallic fall down the chain way. So ended up pulling the timing cover and found out all my tensioners were broken. Surprisingly no damage to the engine from the parts that broke off.

I have same P0300 on JGC 4.7 my mech. Is going to change sparks as he blames they are Densos (2 months old) and should have been only Champions. He disconnected both O2 sensors but there was no change, I do not want to spend for sparks if its not an issue.... What to do?

Your mechanic doesn't know what he is doing apparently. Disconnecting the O² sensors will not make it run better. The computer is getting a faulty reading as it is. That is why it is running poorly.. Disconnecting will make the computer get no signal and still run poorly because it will flood the cylinders with too much or too little gas. If the problem is only on odd or even cylinder numbers, then change the sensor on that side. If the misfire is random on both sides, the problem may be plugs or valves.

You cannot just take it out or unplug it to test it. It is possible to test the sensors with a multimeter. Search KZbin for videos on that. I do not have a video on it.

There's 3 of them.. You should have looked up how to test and see which one was needing to be replaced. 1 on each side before the catalytic converter and 1 after.. Usually it's one of the front 2 in my experience.. Suggestion is to replace both front ones at the same time because they generally go out together withing a short time..

My Jeep Liberty 2010 Limited same model is experiencing the same fault code PO300 but there is a glitch in the engine itself. It was found that the engine oil went into the piston region and spreaded all over inside the cavity. It made all the Interior of the engine very greasy and choked up. Now what's the solution??? Can we clean that engine again by any cleaning agent or solution ????

Yes. It could. Any misfire could cause an engine to smoke.. But excessive smoke could indicate other, more expensive problems...

I’m currently having the same issue with my 09 Liberty limited. Changed coils and plugs. Checked vacuum lines. Cleared MIL. After the 4th drive cycle came back on. Confirmed same PO300. Same cylinders as before, 3 and 6. Do you think this issue could be the one and the same? I ask because my misfires are on both banks, not just one. I also need to add that there isn’t any cylinder specific codes present, just the PO300. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and helpful. Cheers 🍻

It's very possible. I changed the one O2 sensor on my sisters Jeep in the video and then the drivers side went bad just a short time later.

Interesting that the other side went bad. I’m going to switch out both the upstream and downstream sensors. I also need to add that using my DTC reader with live data, I’m watching both 02 sensors go from 0, 20, -10,-30 etc (random numbers i don’t remember the specific ones point being they’re all over the place) but I’ll give that a shot and let you know how it went. @@poopingandroid I completely agree with that. A little back story with this is it’s my wife’s jeep. She failed to tell me about the coolant being low. Well she overheated it. Drained the oil (needed changed anyway) no milkshake. No metal. Topped off the coolant and reservoir. Verified no leaks. Idk why it went bone dry but it did. A week later the P0300 code came up. Did the plugs and coils (from my first post) no change. I don’t think it’s a head gasket. I’m not hearing any of the tell tale signs or especially the steam from the exhaust. I’ve debated about having a compression test done (one tool I don’t have 😑) but again I don’t hear any signs or symptoms that would generally indicate a failed gasket. So idk. It’s entirety possible it cooked those sensors. 🤷🏼‍♂️.

@@Thealmightybyron These Jeeps are also known to have valve issues on occasion.. I got my compression tester off Amazon for like $40 or $50 and it's a complete kit. Might be worth the investment before spending a couple bills on O2 sensors and then you will have the compression tester for future use.

The reason my car died (completely!) was a broken lgnition accentuator...located in steering wheel. 600 bucks but I'm not complaining. The check engine light went off. Jeep was still missing, just a tiny bit. So I got seafoam for older engines.. Works pretty darn good.

With my sisters car there was I think a P0302 and a P0304 error code which told me that it was on the passengers side and told me which one to change. But it is best to change both at the same time, since they both tend to go out together.

You Da Man!!! Pretty sure this is what is wrong with mine. Wow I cannot get my hand on that connector plus I broke the 02 loose then it seized up. I went back and forth on it with a wrench put the 02 socket back on it and broke the socket in half. Enough fun for 1 day I ordered a better set of sockets and will have more fun in 2 days. on my handheld reader its saying #6 misfire. its got a rough idle and misses on low rpms. higher rpms accelerating it kicks in and fires. engine light is on and flashes sometimes. only been doing it 3 days after i got "fresh" gas. im doing a fuel treatment then Im going to pull the plug and replace if needed. Then ill move onto the coil or the o2 sensor (whichever is cheaper). i didnt think about the sensor, so thanks for the input.

You can always change it back. And it is possible that you got a damaged sensor. They are a bit fragile.

It's not the sensor. I had the stereo on when I pulled the sensor. And I got shocked. No fuse blown...starter is ok. Alternator is ok. Plugs seem fine. With the relay in...it does nothing but turn the lights and stuff on. I can bypass the remand it turns but won't start. I'm lost ...need help bad. May loose my job monday if I can't be there

Hi I have a 2007 Liberty 3.7L V6, 117,000 miles. Owned it since 67,000 miles. It operated perfectly for the first 30,000 miles and then it started getting a #1 Cyl misfire code P0301. It also seldomly gets a #1 cyl fuel injector circuit open P0201. It must be a very mild fault as the misfire freeze frame data shows it always happens at less than 350 rpm and when cleared it comes back immediately at next startup, cold or hot. So it seems to only happen once on startup as its moving up to regular idle speed. The miss isnt noticeable when driving or idling. Its getting 15.5 mpg fuel mileage. Doesnt burn oil. Doesnt smoke. Has great power. I've changed plugs and coils but no difference. Cleaned air intake, air filter, and ran cleaner through system. I've cleaned and inspected the injector plug and all wires but no difference. Dry / wet compression test of #1, 3 and 5 cylinders all read good: 160 / 175 psi. I'm wondering if there's a mild wire defect for that injector, or just a flakey connection somewhere. Has anyone tried to use a new set of compatible gauge wires and run them to a place closer to the injector control? I can't see where the wires go though. I'm not sure if I should just live with this, or troubleshoot it more. I don’t care about the engine light as we don't have emission requirements. Now that I know the compression is good, I'm not so worried about it. Any suggestions of what to do next? Thanks! Pics are of what I'm curious the injector wires are headed.

@bassboostedd8220 it was fuel injector. I should have ohm checked it to begin with. Read like 120 ohms. They should read 12.5 to 15 ohms. You can do it by simply disconnecting the plug, while it's still in car fuel rail. After swapping #1 then #4 started to do the same almost immediately. So Ohm check all of them. Replace any that read more than 15 ohms. It's pretty easy to swap them. I bought a set of 6 rebuilt ones for $80ish on ebay.

Not really. If you have no check engine light. I did have a similar issue with my Jeep patriot and that turned out to be bad spark plugs. But I can't say that is your issue. Hard to tell not being able to witness it in person.

Having same problem on 2007 Nitro 3.7. Mu question is, did it make a constant ticking noise while running and missfiring?

No Bud.. Ticking is probably lifter noise... You got bigger issues..

Ticking generally means lifter/ rocker arm/ cam/ valve issues, which can reduce fuel intake and reduce power..

Or cause misfire.. But could also foul a CO² sensor with unburnt fuel and cause false readings and misfires as a result.

Update: After all that I did had to take it to a garage. He changed all the lifter, and timing chain tensioners. After removing the head he found that piece of the head inside where valve goes thru broke off. Valve guide if im not mistaken. Pretty random but happens. Very expensive fix. New head, new piston. Anyway got it back everything seems ok, but there is a slight miss. Got code PO300. I changed the bank 2 upstream sensor before trip to the garage. Now im going to change the other side and see if it takes out that miss and slight shimmy at idle. I have read that these sensors should be replaced in pairs. I will give another update after I get it done.

@@5248momo Dude I don't know the part number. My sister paid over $300 to have coils and plugs replaced on her Jeep too. Simply tell the Auto Parts place that you want the O2 sensor for passenger side BEFORE the catalytic converter.

I have the same error code P0300 along with P0302 which is a cylinder 2 misfire. Autozone hooked up their scanner and their computer suggested to replace the fuel injector. Is the o2 sensor and fuel injector related? Does one affect the other? If it does, then which should I replace first?

I would suggest replacing the O2 sensor first and go from there.

I would change the exhaust co2 sensor and see what happens. It's cheap and easy to replace. And a P0300 error code is for MULTIPLE cylinder misfire... The 0302 is for cylinder 2.
