The Patriot is basically front-wheel drive. But power is transmitted via a vane package to the rear wheels if the front wheels slip. More like auxiliary operation. Toyota rave4 has a similar drive system. Partly to reduce fuel costs.

I LOVE this Jeep. I have had it for two years (I did a 1 year lease on both). I hated the CVT but I have the 6 speed now and its great. Great gas mileage, responsive steering, sits up like a SUV but quiet ride. It was a great pickup (to merge on highway ramps or to overtake on a two lane country road)...its really great.

That's not necessarily true and you can usually tell just by looking at the condition it's in. Jeeps are made for this and hold up extremely well. If something breaks, you fix it, that's pretty much it, and if you know what you're doing it's not likely anything will break from off-roading. I have an 06 Grand Cherokee that looks and runs better than most passenger cars, because I take care of it, and I do off-road it. Jeeps are tested on the Rubicon Trail. What this guy was doing is not even remotely close to abuse.

+S Justice I also have a 2015 jeep patriot but I have the 5spd and it's front wheel drive not 4x4 :( but other then it not having 4wd it's been great.

+S Justice @217000 the transmission failed and no one rebuilds CVT transmissions. You can only get an OEM one for about 4-5 thousand if I remember correctly plus where I live the average gararge charges $200/hr so needless to say I gave it away for parts. It lasted 6 1/2 years so no complaints.

@ulric291 How about you get "educated." Grand Cherokees, Libertys, Patriots and Commanders are all yuppie soccer mom SUVs. If you want an actual 4x4, then get something without IFS/IRS. (Independent Front Suspension / Independent Rear Suspension) The only 4x4 Jeeps that should carry the logo have a solid axle for both front and rear, I.e. CJ, MJ, XJ, TJ, YJ, JK ZJ. All the rest are shit.

Having a locked diff. really makes a difference. Got one installed on my 08 pathfinder (only w/ limited slip), plus with bfgoodrich all terrain tires installed just recently.

We finally had our first real snowfall here in WV. I took my Patriot out for some fun and was amazed how well it handled. The traction control and ABS, as well as the ESP was flawless, much better than my Explorer.

+Spencer Smith I took this on a road trip and hated it. You have to push the engine so hard to get it to do anything, it loves the dirt and gravel; but it hates steep grades. When I got in it felt like the cabin was overpressurized and it eventually gave me a headache. The radio/audio is nice, but the older escape's have a better sound setup. The windshield wipers are slow and useless in heavier rain, If you use the rear hatch; you will constantly hit your head on the interior trim. the steering is also a little too tight, it gives you this feeling that if you corner too quickly that understeer is biting at your heels. Overall, A Great City Car But If You Want Something Nice, Get Something Else

I have a question - there is a button that looks like "slipper when wet" symbol next to my seat heater (middle lower console) - if you depress it then whatever it is goes OFF. I liked the video and it answered some questions for me, but the driver in this vid could have done better if he just straightened his god damn wheels when he backed out or went forward when he was stuck. It was like watching a an inexperienced female driver wonder why she cant get out of her parking spot while her wheels are cranked and she is flooring it. Damn it was frustrating to watch!

You have repeatedly failed to counter what I have said with any facts or proof to the contrary to back up your belief. To put it this way, this weekend while offroading I was watching a buddy of mine trying to make it up a certain hill that was beyond impossible without lockers. This was proven by 30 vehicles not making it, but about 8 or so that had lockers made it. PROVE ME WRONG..

I want a Wrangler so bad, but between gas prices, the economy and most of all the environmental situation... i just can't justify it. And this Patriot seems to fit the bill perfectly. mid twenty mpg's, plenty of room for the family AND 4WD for a little fun and safety. And for the price, can't beat it.

Handles just fine on the road for an SUV...better than the older Calibers and HHR CUVs, IMHO. THe suspension is tuned differently than the Caliber and Compass, and should have been more fine-tuned in 2009 and 2010 models, over the '07 & '08 (which is comfortable enough for me to prefer it over a bouncy Nitro).

It doesn't truly lock all 4 wheels. You will never see all 4 wheels get power at same time. Good for mild snow nothing deep or hilly

If you intend to go on 4x4 trails, the Freedom Drive II (FDII) "Trail-Rated" package would be the way to go, gives you skid plates, all the 4WD goodies, and an extra inch of ground clearance. If you decide to get one in any case, don't opt for the smaller 2.0L engine, not worth the performance loss for the negligible savings in gas or cost.

Ice is far more dangerous than snow, but snow can make it harder for you to maneuver if you don't have the proper ground clearance. I'd take snow over ice any day.
