Jeep Renegade RHD Dashcam Hardware Install

A little how-to video on installing a dashcam hardware kit to the cabin fuse box located behind the glove box. On a LHD Renegade, this fuse box will still be on the left but easier to get to than behind the glove box as it is on a RHD vehicle.

I've just done this myself, and I don't think I'd have been able to without this video! The hardest part was getting the original fuse out, but with the aid of some pliers I was just about able to get it out. I won't lie, it was a tad nerve-racking to start pulling panels off my new car, but it all went back together again, and now I don't need to worry about the dashcam. Thanks for all the advice!

I found this very helpful - it gives a real sense of the faff required as opposed to those 1 minute videos that make it look "bish-bash-bosh" and off you go.

Thanks for this, I am very happy to pull the panels off and hardwire install it by myself (I'm planning to use the alarm fuse for 24/7 recording) but I'm curious how trustworthy the junction boxes are? Could they spontaneously catch fire?

Although one side of the box is 12v the current draw is quite low as its just a USB powered camera so less than 2Amps so unlikely to get hot to melt anything. So as long as nothing shorts ( and its fused at the closest point possible) it should be very safe. In over 2 years of having this one there have been no issues nor have I ever heard of anyone having an issue. The closer the fuse is to the connection point of the 12v generally makes it safer should there be an issue along the line. Just a warning on the 24/7 connection Renegade's are funny about low battery voltages so make sure you have a system that cuts out before the voltage gets too low on the batter - especially if you don't drive much daily or leave it for a week or so.

@@LE60LAD nice one thanks for the reassuring info and fast response! I just found that all the fuses under the dash are constants which is great. Just to confirm, do you mean the fuse physically closest to 12V connection into the fuse box would be best? I’ll keep an eye out for a hardwire kit that has the volt limiter built in!

@@rogerhalt3991 yeah them hardwired kits have a connector that is fused ( two fuses on for the supply and one for the camera) that plugs into the fuse holder so it can't get any closer than that. Not all of them are always live - the cig/ aux is not always live and I am sure a few others arnt too.

They are part of the Trailhawk trim level. But I think you can find them on like Ali express or Amazon

I got this one off Amazon but you can find them on Ebay too - just search for USB Hardwire kit for dashcam - make sure you get the correct USB connector for your dashcam as there are a few different types - Micro/ Mini / USB-C

so does that fuse turn on and off with the car or is it an always active fuse

Hi. The fuse is the same one for the auxiliary / cig lighter socket so it has to be powered on by the car. So not suitable for cameras with parking sensors that trigger if the vehicle is bumped - unless it has an inline battery.

@@LE60LAD ahh i see thanks for the info .. and yes trying to hardwire my thinkware dc and having trouble between limited info and slightly uninformative owners manual as to which fuse would be an always active fuse was hoping for an easy answer but doesnt look to be so

@@aremtie I am not sure if any of them fuses in that box are always live. Maybe the radio one as you can turn the radio on without the key being on. That's worth a try. Personally if it was me I would take a feed of the battery with a fuse inline with the cable to the camera. My only worry is that Renegade's and low battery voltage don't play too well and with local covid restrictions having something on all the time will kill the battery. You can get USB leads that have a box in the middle of them that have low voltage detection so that might save the battery if you go this route.

@@LE60LAD well the kit i have has low energy savings for parking mode built in as well im actually doing this on a 2018 jeep compass trailhawk but for the majority fuses and box location are all the same other than some additional stuff added to the compasses .. ive recieved some info that i thought of before but was worried might have a bad outcome and that the door lock and unlock must always have power and there is a 20amp fuse slot for specifically that in slot F38 so i might try to go that route
