Thanks for this, lots of good info here. Also, those solder splices look pretty slick. I've never seen those before, but I will try them next chance I get. I have always preferred soldering to crimping.

My ignition switch broke and would not crank engine went to Napa and they wanted $55 dollars for it, I bought a $5 push button wired it from fuse box to starter now I can crank it even with it in gear if needed. Always thankful for information though!

We just did one of those on a Cherokee, little tab inside the ignition switch breaks. The Cherokee we wheel has a similar setup, a key turns on power to ecu and all, then a push button start.

@@TabooCustoms I just bought a 98 tj with a push to start. The check engine light is for the NSS and it was bypassed the way you showed in the video. Is there a way to do this correctly to have the NSS installed and have the push to start to get rid of the check engine light?

It is a pain to remove, might need a crowfoot to get it out.

I noticed that this was unplugged on my friends 97 wrangler when I was replacing the transmission cooling lines. So I plugged it back in. After that when going up hills it surges unless you give it enough gas to drop a gear. When I unplug it it's just fine. So you think replacing the switch will fix the problem? The wiring looks fine.

That is odd. So if its unplugged it shouldn't start unless its rewired somewhere else. The only thing that switch really does is tell the ECM its safe to start (detects its in neutral or park) and it runs the reverse lights. With the connector unplugged it starts?

@@TabooCustoms Sorry about that. I was wrong. just crawled back under it. It is a two wire plug below the cooling line facing the back. (torque converter clutch solenoid)

Do you need to drain the oil before removing the neutral switch.

No shouldn't need to drain it.

My 2000 Sahara Jeep Wrangler TJ shut off two times since I last took it to the shop and it only crank back up in neutral. What is the problem?

The jeep dies while running, that would be something different than the neutral safety switch I believe. The NSS is only tied into the starter circuit. Only turning over in neutral, that could be the switch itself down on the transmission or something internal to the transmission.

I’m confused how did you know it was just the wiring and not the switch itself??

We could see the insulation pulled back or melted at the connector.

@carsonturley4326 what code are you getting? You may need to reset you check engine light. Is the neutral safety switch working, does it start in P and N and will it not try to start in D.

@@TabooCustomsI’m getting P1899 the car is having a hard time starting occasionally like sometimes it will just take a a few tries to start it. Not like it’s struggling to turn over but it’s just not engaging if that makes sense. I figured it was a wiring problem and then the check engine light for the neutral safety switch came on and now I’m not sure

@carsonturley4326 Typically if the NSS circuit or switch is an issue I is a no start condition. I don't think any of the wires to the nss switch goes through other sensors where that might cause hard to start. If you have changed connector and cleared codes, but then the code came back you would have to check the wiring or replace nss.
