My name is Keolu from Maui Hawaii, I have a 1976 jeep cj7 with amc v8 and turbo 400. im trying to Identify the transfer case. i haven"t seen one like this. there is a smoth cover on the back in line with the trans and front and rear drive shafts on the right side. I wish i could send a picture.

A 242, there are a few things you have to do to make it work, usually we find one that had it and then strip everything for someone doing the conversion. Otherwise I think its a little bit of a pain piece mealing it together. Jeep people--the Liberty 231 J case is a good upgrade if you need a t case upgrade and 23 spline input. You need front driveshaft fixed yoke and Iron Rock Offroad has a hack and tap slip yoke eliminator for the 32 spline liberty t case. Or get the full monty SYE. Kit. Reason to use liberty case? Liberty owners rarely go offroad and beat their vehicles to death. Like Cherokee and wranglers could be wore out and abused. Very good odds of getting a good unabused t case from a pampered never off roaded Liberty

@@abc0583 some are just awd and no low range. Also the split can say 90 percent fwd and ten rwd. No way to know how many cars out there. If the vehicle has a 4 low range then it has a t case for off road work. If no low range then it is for awd on roads and snow etc

Take out the front drive shaft. I had problems in 4 lots of noise and clunking and vibrations in 2 on the highway. Same problems on both jeeps one tcase exploded because the double Cardon joint (may be misspelt) was bad. I took the front drive shaft of my other jeep and problems stopped so had to rebuild. I believe you have the cv joint style but same systems so maybe save your tcase till you rebuild. Hope that's the issue as it is cheaper best of luck

hmm ok thanx men. & someone just told me since i took off the four tpms tire pressure monitor sensor that could make the t-case to act up since the sensor is giving a four flat tires to the computer/ecu or however is call i forgot now smh. any opinion on that please ?

I have a 1999 grand cherokee full time four wheel drive. Wondering if i take off front drive shaft will that hurt the transfer case. Do they have something that plugs where the shaft was that fliud would not leak out

There is nothing you need to plug as they have yokes on each side, you dont remove these when you remove the front driveshaft. Technically this is not great for the transfer case as that system is designed to have a 70% rear and 30% front load distribution or around that. Basically your making the back half of that transfer case do all the work and those transfer cases are not great by design. Whats the issue on not just replacing the transfer case. @@JeepsUnlimited looking at the transfer it is 247-J there is not a yoke the drive shaft it slides in the case. Spline shaft. Did somebody change it in the jeep. It is quadra trac II. FOUR wheel drive and low 4 wheel drive. The more i am understanding the jeep it will be in two wheel drive until there is a slipping the works as four.

@@rabbitpoint4619 It is a full time system but the transfer of power is usually 70% rear roughly 30% Front, as for your front driveshaft, the rear should have a spline slip yoke style but not the front, it will have the slip spline middle of 3rd of the way down the driveshaft sometimes but both ends on the front driveshaft should have a yoke. Have you actually removed it yet?

@@JeepsUnlimited yes I am mistaken the rear is splined. Do not know what I was thinking. Was looking at the rear drive shaft. Is that transfer case a good one. I do or will be doing mostly road driving not off road. Would love to but just better not. Hate to say to old for that but need to keep it running to. Taking the front drive shaft off in summer does not seem like it will change gas mileage much. I have 4.0 and the sensor above the rear view mirror said 10 miles to the gallon. Hooe for better than that.. I am new to jeeps love it looks great, thanks for answering my questions.

As of april 15 u pull n pay aurora has one. I took the nv231 from the jeep next to it. I looked before unbolting things and it is. A nv242
