Jeep Wrangler YJ - Engine swap in process! Part 1

Jeep Wrangler YJ - The transmission finally gave up. Not sure yet what happened until I open it up at a later time. But, I scored a complete engine, transmission & ECU from a '93 XJ Cherokee for great price. Time to swap them in. Here is the process of getting the tired engine/trans out.

Dead blow hammer I used to drive the motor mount bolts out with. The great thing about this hammer is that is minimizes damage to whatever you are striking: amzn.to/1ojNHXY
I used to have one of these engine levelers. I loaned it out and it never came back. Very handy for situations like this! Here is the link: amzn.to/1rttvL0
I'm not going to recommend an engine puller. Why? There are too many cheaply built ones out there. If I can't see the quality first hand, I will not recommend. The one used in this video is obviously homemade. It's a heavy weight beast! It's also designed to hook to a trailer hitch and behind the truck if needed.

Hey just a thought since you have a wrangler AX15 coming out and a cherokee AX 15 going in, instead of drilling holes to change the clock of the transfer case why not just switch out the Cherokee back case with the wrangler back case on the Transmission? Those rear adapter cases on the AX's come off rather easy.

Just a suggestion you think about doing a grill swap from another jeep, Unless you like the look of the wrangler grilll . But if you dont then you should swap it out with another grill from another jeep so it looks nicer.

Hey bud I noticed your still running the factory headlight harness. The problem is Chrysler used about #16 gauge wire and used the headlight switch as an inline breaker. I redone mine with 2 relays(one high beam, the other low) and #12 wire and it makes a drastic difference! Stock headlight went from dull yellow to bright white, and the relays handle the load instead of your healight switch, so more more blinking on and off!

Bryon Bullard It's cool man, I really appreciate it. Yea ... I've got some relays just for that purpose. I've just never got around to it. I was even shopping for H4 conversion kits today while chilling at work. Student at the college I work at was talking to me about his Cherokee having wiring issues when he upgraded to the Silverstar headlights. I explained the relay mod, he seemed interested, Don't know that he tried it or not. I used to have an old Chevy '78 3/4 ton mud/crawler toy that I rewired like that. Yes I agree it makes a huge difference. My '84 Mustang is even gonna get the same treatment. The Mustang is also getting a g3 130 amp alternator so that it handles lights and the electric fan better. I've got another g3 130 amp I've been looking at how to convert the Jeep with it. OH nooooo ... putting a Ford part on a Jeep .. LOL. Well, people put 8.8's under Jeeps all the time. A Ford alternator can't hurt to brighten things up. Seriously, I really like you chiming in with such a great suggestion. Feel free to drop comments like that at any time. LOL! I cant rag on ya for the Ford alt, I found and electric fan in my buddies barn off of some kinda Ford and put it on mine day before yesterday. I also have an 8.8 I'm gonna put in as soon as I get it redone the way I want( spool, c clip eliminator, and move spring mounts to the underside of it). I'm pondering a GM alt, just cause I have a bunch layin around,and can just run em with one wire. Keep up the good work

Bryon Bullard I stripped out an Explorer about 3 months before I bought the Jeep. I trashed a disc brake 8.8... kick myself now!! I've got like 2 - 130 amp 3g Ford alts and a 90 amp. It takes 2 wires to run them. Super simple to wire. On my Mustang very easy to mount. On the Jeep .. it's gonna require pulling out the welder and fabbing some brackets. Hey .. if we need to cross pollinate to create the perfect toy.... so be it!! Let the hacking/modding begin :-)

Bryon Bullard Hey man .. You had mentioned about the headlight harness a while back. I installed a relay upgrade harness. It didn't really change the quality of my plain sealed beams, but running the H4's and the harness ... it made a huge difference. I restored a YJ last year about to start on a TJ - have to rebuild the 2.5

Redneck Garage I watched some your videos. You do great work. The engine I pulled from the YJ is going to get rebuilt eventually. It's going to need bored over because it had so little compression. Overbore means new pistons. I may as well get a 4.2 crank and stroke it to a 4.6 while I'm at it. I'm going for the monster torque for a few bucks more. My sisters YJ has the 2.5. Dad has an '06 TJ its a 4.0, good friend of mine has a 2000 TJ with a 4.0. I'd like to get my sisters YJ to drop the built 350 I have that I'm doing nothing with. I need to make a pull-a-part run when it warms up a bit. Good luck on the TJ!! I'll be checking out the vids!

Thanks Bro hopefully have it Monday and see how bad it is - LOL I would have liked to have a 4.0 but for the price a 2.5 will do fine. The 350 is a monster ( and a trans eater ) in the YJ - I ha a CJ with a 304 AMC and it could pop a wheelie - LOL

I would use the chevy trans & t-case also. I have a D60 & 14 bolt at a friends house. So basically it would be a Jeep powered by all Chevy. That CJ sounds like fun!! LOL. Tear down the 2.5 and check the bores. If they aren't too far out of round. Hone the crap out of it to take out the glaze. Throw a set of rings and bearing in it and let 'er rip! Oh ... oil pump too since it's tore down. Lookin forward to watching the build! Hey .. that 2.5 build would be a traffic generator for your channel. There aren't any good engine building vids for Wranglers that I have found. Good luck my Jeepin' brotha!!

Ok man I messed up and need your help . I don’t know the order of my injectors wires I could really use your help lol . I turned my 91 into a 93. I’m pretty much done but I need the order . I do have the book and it tells me the wire colors but not the Oder they go on , can you help me out

My 91 4.0 yj engine with auto trans is on its last legs, can I swap in a 4.0 from a 96 Cherokee that has a manual trans? Without any problems? And keep my auto trans?

Just make sure to swap all your 91 front accessory parts over to the 96 engine along with the motor mounts. Also the Cherokee has a 90deg oil filter adapter installed on the block, take it off and install the YJ threaded adapter. Use the YJ automatic parts on the back of the XJ engine. I think that should be it.

Been there done that! Even done it in yards. Here is about the least expensive as you gonna find: amzn.to/2r5rVkS . You may be able to find one at your local autoparts store. Or check local "tool rental" places to see if they have one available to rent. The trick to using an engine hoist in gravel and dirt is to use an old sheet of plywood. Lay the plywood under the wheels so the engine hoist has a hard surface to roll on. Makes life so much easier. Thanks for dropping in! Have a great day!
