Jeep Wrangler YJ - I removed my Track Bars

Jeep Wrangler YJ - Do this mod ONLY IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE with not having the track bars. Me personally, I wish I had removed the track bars a long time ago! It rides so much better. It typically should only about 15 - 20 minutes per track bar. I had a stubborn one. But I conquered and got it done.

First of all, here are some track bar / suspension parts if you need or want some:amzn.to/2jfYahs Cool .. Hello Everyone. Just like to point something out. After answering many comments I've realized that this is one of those mods that some people are not comfortable doing. If you are not comfortable pulling the track bars off, it's OK just don't do it. There is nothing wrong with leaving them on. The Jeep will still drive down the road with the track bars. The only benefits to removing the track bars is provide to more flex for the off roaders and a smoother ride for the asphalt. I have had good luck with no control issues at all. But, I am typically a slow driver anyways. I feel safe because I don't drive aggressively to begin with. My '84 GT Mustang that is seen in the background occasionally, it ran real strong. NO problem laying 3rd gear rubber. Yet the car has never been over 100mph on the highway. I've cut it loose on the dragstrip a few times with an older engine set up. Will it bust a 100mph? Not a doubt it will. Does it handle curves well? Its does fairly decent (needs rear suspension work). It will totally out corner the Jeep though .. why? Because the Jeep wasn't ever meant to hang corners to begin with! Drive a Jeep Wrangler for what they are, great capable off-roaders or cruising on the asphalt with the top off .. IN THE SLOW LANE chilling out enjoying life. Again, there is nothing wrong with leaving the track bars on if that is what you want. Any video, instructions, website, person ... etc that spells out mods, hacks, repairs is not twisting anyone's arm to do what they are watching or reading. At the end of the day, it's up to the owner of the vehicle as to whether they want to perform the modifications that is being demonstrated. Thanks everyone and have a great day! Peace out .. Just took mine off my 90' YJ. I cleaned the bolt ends off first then soaked them for two days with PB Blaster Penetrator. Used a 1/2" breaker bar. I did disconnect the left rear shock bolt from the axle. It gave me more room to access the left upper track bar bolt. I love the way it rides and handles. Night and day difference! Thanx for this video. It only took me 66 years to finally get my first Jeep. I bought a 88 Wrangler YJ December 2020 and have been steadily doing improvements to it, when the funds, allow it. My "Bet-R-Half" (Jeep Name) rides extremely ruff, bone jarring over bumps. After seeing this video I decided to take the front and rear track bars off. The Front was Easy Peasy to remove. The back was froze up like yours. After about 30 minutes of trying to cut the bolt off, I gave up. I then put a new cutting wheel in my grinder and decided to cut the track bar itself as close to the connection as possible. Hell of alot easier. This 88YJ will be my last vehicle and I have no intentions of putting a track bar back on, especially after taking it for a test drive down the bumpiest street in my neighborhood. What a Freaking difference, thanx again. Oh Yea, I have a kidney belt for sale , lol Guy McDonald

DO NOT SELL THAT KIDNEY BELT!!! Damn leaf springs will give you reason to use it!!! LOL. In my Jeep I feel like I am riding in a semi doing a bobtail. No weight to smooth things out. At times I wish I had coils, then I watch YT and glad I have leaf. BTW, the track and stabilizer bar on my jeep are in some dump somewhere. 🙂

Ran down a weird rabbit hole while on amazon and found your sway bar disconnect review. Thanks for this video even 3 years after. I bought a project jeep (2.5l turbo :D ) and noticed some missing stuff like the track bar, but this video puts me a bit at ease reminding me leaf cars don't need track bars. Been jeeping since about 75. None of my old jeeps had track bars or sway bars. When I got a 93 YJ, that crap went real quick. Have to admit the sway bar took a little longer. Have the quick disconnect but is a pain in the ass. Must be on level ground. So the sway bar is now held up by zip ties.. The lift I have is very stiff and don't notice sway in It.

I have to say on my 1987 yj I had no track bar before I put one on it road and handled nice I put it on it handled to quickly on corners and dips in the road feels like it’s going to roll over I’m taking it back off thanks for the video and proving I don’t need one

I have a 93 with a 2-1/2" shackle lift on 32's. Removed both track bars. The ride is sooooooo much better without the track bars. No bad effects noticed at all.

Absolutely agree! Like you I have heard the discussion on this for a long time. Your video inspired me to pull the trigger and do it. I plan on fabricating my hood lock that you came up with in a couple of weeks also. Keep the YJ videos coming!

That hood lock works well. Take your time on the drilling and tapping the bolt holes. Get them too far off center the bolts will not thread in. Glad you like the vids!!!

First thing to come off a yj Is trackbars and sway bar. Limit so much flex and honestly handles so much better on the road. People who are worried about body roll, gonna sound silly but try driving with wheel spacers turning hard and see the difference it handles. Offset wheels, spacers or both make a large on and offroad improvement.

Haven't done the bars yet but it had spacers on it when I got it and it is much more stable than previous jeeps I've owned. The bars will be coming off asap because it is rougher than my old 3/4 ton and light enough it feels like it catch air on bumps on the hiway

Crawled under my dads yj and started scratching my head when I saw the track bars. Just glad to know I will be good to remove them. (I don’t put it past any of the makers to do this stuff back in the 80’s). The track bar makes sense on my 79 bronco, but no on leaf springs.

I did exactly the same and it made a significant differnce to the ride, comfort (LOL) and physical control of my wifes YJ - research this and look at why Jeep installed these massive track bars to elliviate a public concern that was unjustified.

I did this mod with my 93 and a 4" lift. Good mod.👍thsnkfully I didn't have problems with the rear tracbar. Wondering if it would have been easier to just cut off the bracket though. 😉

I have been trying to figure out how to make my YJ ride smoother. I recently put new leaf springs, shackles & shocks on it & it is a rough riding son of a gun! Looks like this is my next project. I hope it helps cuz I'm getting too old to take this abuse! 😂

Also make sure you greased the bushings and your shackles aren't torqued too tight

Ok I'm going to try this. I added a 2.5" suspension lift (new springs with an increased arc). It rides like a buckboard. I added a corbeau suspension seat which helped, but it's not fun. I installed the sway bar disconnects already too but haven't tried them out yet. I even added the track bars extensions front and rear to keep the diff centered. I only plan on trail driving, not Moab rock crawling so I want this riding as soft and smooth as possible. I'm doing this. Next is better shocks. I'm disconnecting the shocks as a test to see how soft I can get it, then ordering properly valved shocks. I'll let you know my results.

I'm really happy I did this mod. It helped the ride quite a bit! As for your shocks, don't go with the "heavy duty". They are valved a lot stiffer, therefore, making the ride much harsher. My buddy has a TJ, he went with heavy duty shocks ... it now rides rougher than my YJ. Please do let me know the results. I'd like to know what you found. I know, late to the party here. I did the 2.5 lift. was more like 4 to 5 inch lift. Also did the SYE. Before I did that I removed the track bar. Did the quick disconnects for the sway bar. Now the sway bar is held by zip ties. The quick disconnect is a pain and no longer use it. No need, slow driver and the lift is so stiff.

Too cool. I have just finished up my 95 Hardtop installation on my 93 with half doors. Ended up modifying the half window frames a little so the windshield angle and top contacts fit. Now I am going to try your suggestion on the track bar. I have already tried to loosen the back when I installed the exhaust and gave up on it at the time. The front it pretty oiley, so it probably will come loose. I have a 1.5 lift with just heavy leaf spring shackles. And large tires. I carefully set toe-in to 1/4 in and Jeep was quite twitchy. It also made the off center a heavy. Interesting when I first started, it was 3/16" out. (think someone got confused before me) twitchy but no pull which was interesting I kicked it back from 1/4" in to 1/16" in and that actually made it pull to the right on a crown road. So I set it just a tad over 1/8" in. Still a little heavy off center but good. My Jeep is pretty much around town under 35-45mph hobby. MY QUESTION. WHEN YOU SAY IT RIDES BETTER ON THE HIGHWAY, DO YOU MEAN LESS TWITCHY? IT ACTUALLY AS IS FILL LIKE EVEN EVEN BUT LITTLE BUMPS TEND TO STEER VEHICLE. HOWEVER, MINE ACTUALLY STAYS STRAIGHT DOWN THE ROAD THEN MY WONDERING TACOMA. HOWEVER, THE CONSTANT TWITCH IS A LITTLE WORRISOME. MY SUSPENSION AND TIERODS AND SUCH ARE LIKE NEW TIGHT. NO PLAY ANYWHERE. JUST LOOKING AT THE PANHARD TRACK BAR MAKES ME FILL LIKE WHEN YOU HIT A BUMP OR UNEVEN ON SAY RIGHT TIRN, IT'S UPWARD MOVEMENT IS PULLING LEFT TIRE. SORRY ABOUT THE RANT..SO JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,, MY QUESTION. WHEN YOU SAY IT RIDES BETTER ON THE HIGHWAY, DO YOU MEAN LESS TWITCHY.??

With the track bars installed, when the suspension flexes due to a bump in the road, it actually pushes the axle to the side because of the arc the track bars runs at. Also, the suspension is in a constant bind due to the leaf springs are designed to go up and down, track bars force them to work side to side as well. So the leaf springs and track bars are in a constant battle for proper movement. Removing the track bar allows the leaf springs to flex naturally, therefore, a softer ride. As for all the details you mention about the minute changes. Its a Jeep Wrangler .. its never gonna drive perfect. My dads 2006 TJ is flawless mechanically but it still has its quirks when driving it. As for being less "twitchy" as you call it. I guess you could say yes it is less twitchy. When turning or changing lanes its a bit softer feeling when turning the steering wheel. I know many people that dont like the feel after removing the track bars. So, if you are into the detail minute adjustments looking for the perfect handling. Don't tear up your track bars taking them off. You might want then back on. Hope that helps. Have a good day!

Thanks. Not going to tear them up. Going to remove one bolt on the front and tie it up just to see if it does eliminate some of the roll steer. Will report back. Not sure about the back. Going to put a little fast heat and see if it will break. It really need to come off or I need to get another exhaust. My Walker tailpipe is not bent exactly correctly from Autozone. Either it hits the bar or the tub. I slid it to clear both but that leaves the rubber hangers at the muffler area at a 30 degree angle. (I hate exhaust) One Local muffler shop refused to work on it because it has no cat. Another wanted an arm and leg since to adjust it, he needs to block engine/transmission and remove skid plate.

Exhaust can be a pain no doubt. I built my own exhaust so I don't see why that shop says that the skid needs to be dropped. I gotta part of my exhaust from the muffler back. I used some exhaust parts from another rig I stripped out so there are holes starting to develop in the used muffler and tailpipe. I used all new pipe from muffler forward so it's all good. I've got a new Walker tail pipe just haven't installed it yet due not purchasing a new muffler yet. That rear track bar can be a pain. I had to cut mine out. The sleeve inside the bushing at the body end was siezed to the bolt. It would turn but not come through the body tabs.

My Jeep feels like driving a fork lift. I bought it new in 1996 i thought it would loosen up by now. No it still hard ride and I took them off when I put my shackle lift on and put them back on. I could have left them off and have a softer ride....DAMN!!!

My father and I just put a lift kit on his YJ and the track bars were giving us problems. We removed them and came to the realization... Why did this vehicle even have these when it has leaf-springs? We're not even going to bother getting longer ones for the lift, just keep the old ones out.

Have you ever been in an old CJ7 with bigger tires and start to turn the wheel the body will roll before the axle turns hints that is why they put in a track bar it creates an oversteer

Thanks for posting this very informative video! I have a 95 YJ and it has major frame rust issues that I am fixing with lots of welding and fabrication. The track bar brackets are completely rusted to the point of they don't fricken do anything! Now I will just remove them and weld up the frame were they were at! Thanks again!

You should really consider sway bar disconnects too. My competition YJ I completely remove the sway bars. My street YJ I use the disconnects and get the best of both worlds. Check out JKS for those.

When I first got my yj it didn't have the front or rear track bar.. I didn't even know it was a thing until I got more in to jeeping. Never had an issue with it. I added the front track back on just to see what the hype was about and the jeep did not like it one bit. I've been riding with out tracks for 3 years now. If my yj ever rolls it's not because of the lack of track bars.

My first experience with that rear track bar was trying to put new exhaust up in there. After trying to break those bolt, I finially gave up and sawed the rear hanger off the exhaust. Could get it in then and reweld the hanger on with it in that rear hanger first and then to the pipe. If and when I decide to remover the rear track, think I will just take the reciprocating saw and cut the pipe just before the bolts. My concern if just how much the state inspector man here in VA might flip out. On these old 4X4, they really look under them even for rusty frames.

Question, do you think that with a lift the center of gravity or top heaviness would effect cornering? I have a six inch lift and am considering taking out the track bars. Thoughts? Great Video.

Thanks! Glad you found the video informative. Anytime you lift anything it effects stability and corning because you are raising the center of gravity, therefore making it be more top heavy. That is just simple physics. There are lots of people running lift like yours with no track bars or sway bars. In the end you got to decide for yourself what you are comfortable doing. Will it allow more body roll? With as much lift as you have yea more than likely it will. There are many people who totally spaz at the difference it makes in the handling because it may feel less responsive and they put them back on. Then there are the people who are amazed at the ride quality difference. How much all of this is effected will depend on how stiff your leaf springs are and the condition/quality of your steering and suspension parts/bushings. Again .. its completely up yo what type of ride and handling you are comfortable with.

It does but it also limits how well the leaf springs do their job. If you have good bushings there should be very little lateral movement even without the track bars. If you feel better with them, run them on your rig. It's all up to what makes you feel you need.

I've watched this video twice now, a year apart. Still haven't taken my track bars off. but I think it's a good idea to. I think my YJ handles well on road as it is, but it rides poorly. It's only four bolts, and I've swapped the axels so I know 2 will come out. Maybe its time I try it with no track bars.

The poor ride comes from the leaf springs and track bars fighting one another. They both work off 2 different planes of movement, therefore, causing suspension binding. The track bar works at an arch which forces the axle to move laterally or side-to-side. Leaf springs were only designed to work up and down, not side-to-side so the track bars and leaf springs are constantly fighting each other. Removing the track bars allows the leaf springs to do their job as they should. Like you said, its only 4 bolts and it only takes a few minutes to pull them out when not rusted. You discover you aren't comfortable without the tracks bars, put them back in. No harm .. no foul. Good luck and thanks for checking out the video!! Have a great day!

This topic comes up in the forums and FB groups multiple times a day. I just copy paste the video link into the thread and let it ride. In the end, it becomes a personal preference. Some people just get it stuck in their heads that the "factory put it there" its supposed to be there. I'm not even running my sway bars connected right now, can't really tell the difference. Pulling the trackbars no doubt it rides better. In the end, I just don't argue about it anymore. I just tell em' "keep your trackbars .. I'll remove mine and we will both be happy". Did a 94 4.0l swap in my 90, Bought a donor, did a complete rebuild ,.030 pistons and stroked it to a 4.6L. . Cost me about 3500, grabbed a donor from a wrecker for 500, took the computer and everything. If you are going to swap might as well go to Fuel injection, save you from messing with carbs, from my 4.2 to the 4.0 was +80hp right off the hop. Then stroked it added ????, it's a stump puller for sure, but still reliable , day trips or playing, best money I spent, cheers

I removed my rear track bar as you suggested. I haven’t had the time to drive it much to decide if that works for me. My question is my front suspension has a sway bar and a track bar. If I go off roading or go into deep snow, would I need to disengage both or what? My jeep is street driven a lot. Great Videos!!

My Jeep is daily driven at least 70 miles a day to and from work. I removed both front and rear track bar. I run sway bar disconnects in the front. This may have nothing to do with my trac bar being on but I bought a 90 just from my buddy with a 4 inch lift and 33 muds and I have had it for 6 months and I have had 4 rear u joints pop on me I do have the yoke slip eliminator. Could having my trac bar have anything to do with that

I have a question for you, my YJ is a 91 and its kinda weird because my leaf springs in front will move side to side... When facing the jeep I noticed one day when I took a photo and my leaf spring was angled to the left side, then the next time I took a photo it was angled to the right side. What would cause the leaf spring to move side to side just a bit to be noticeable? My YJ has a 3" body lift and a front shackle that looks extended a bit for height... I get a slight wheel wobble when braking from a high speed... Any help would be great... Thanks a ton

Sounds like you have excessively long lift shackles. I am not a fan of those at all! They bind the leaf and frame/shackle bushings. Mess up the front steering geometry. In my opinion, there is nothing good about them. They are a cheap way of getting a suspension lift. But the complications that come with them just isn't worth it. Long story short, if you have really long shackles .. get rid of them. Shackle lift no more than an inch you should be ok. Any more than that, you will get the issues you are describing. When you change the shackles, do yourself a favor and install new bushing while you are at it (bushings can be easy or a major pain to change). Hope this helps! Have a great day!

I know this is an old video, but I just put a 4 in lift on my 91 YJ. I did away with my track bar as well. My question is, do I need to replace my pitman arm? I have clearance on the ground and at full lock, but everywhere I look some people say yes replace it and others say it doesn't need to be replaced.

Honestly its a matter of preference. Using the stock pitman arm with that much lift throws the steering wheel out of alignment. You can adjust some of it out with making adjustments to the drag link. Some people are fine with it. Some people spaz out over it. If it drives well with no excessive bump steer and Its stable on the road at highway speeds. Then its up to you about the rest. I've got 3" of suspension lift with the stock pitman arm, no sway bars or track bars and I am fine with it around town, on the highways at 70 mph. Like I said .. totally up to you.

Nope .. I daily drive mine at least 70 miles a day, it hasn't caused me any negative issues of any kind. Your leaf springs keep the axle positioned laterally. Just watch yourself if those leaf spring bushings go you will get death wobble with track bar removed. Mine didn't start until I ran 33" wheels, no track bars, no sway bars & then over time leaf spring bushings wore down... Buying new lift kit so all new leafs and bushings soon.

You need to check your steering parts. Only coil spring rigs get death wobble. I've owned Jeeps, Chevy trucks, and an International Scout, they are all leaf spring rigs that come from the factory with no track bar. This exact topic is all over the internet .. only coil spring rigs like TJ, XJ JK .. etc get death wobble. If a YJ has front end issues, its ball joints or bad steering parts. Have a great day!

Thanks - I’ve seen a few videos where leaf spring suspensions had death wobble but it makes much more sense to occur on coil suspension. I’m starting with leaf spring bushings - actually just running whole new lift kit because the springs I have on now are nearly flat and I believe I’ve got some axle wrap (clunk) - bought this jeep recently so just getting started, it’s my second - did a full build on another YJ that I owned for 10 years never had any suspension or steering issues. Thanks for the tip, might be worth just going through at all at the same time and hitting ball joints, pitman and tie rods. Not currently running sway bar or track bar but thinking about installing them since I have my old ones still. Thoughts? Thanks!

Im not a fan of body lifts. Both of mine have 3" because the PO installed them. The 93, I'm pulling all that out because I'll be seriously modding that rig. Id like to take the BL out of the 91, I just know there is gonna be twisted broken bolts. I don't wanna take it out that bad! LOL. The 93, I'll probably do another junkyard lift to start out. Thinking of a 6" rear stretch using Cherokee leaves. There is gonna be a swap meet this coming weekend near me. I've heard that RC is supposed to be there. I may go talk to them and see what they got see if the change my mind on the junkyard lift. I'm running mixed leaves in my 91, the other leaves came from a GMC Sonoma. I got about 2.5" of lift for a little less than $150. Works and flexes great.

Since you didn't elaborate whether you were referring to mine or yours, I'll start out with yours. Most people who experience what you are referring to when they pull the track bars have either dead leaf springs or worn out leaf spring bushings .. or .. both. The track bars are acting as a crutch to support the worn out parts. Mine .. easy .. the body has been crooked since the day I bought it because a previous owner bent the body frame mounts and tub. Also the right side of the tub has been in an accident from a previous owner. So .. yep the tub sits twisted and crooked on the frame which has nothing to do with the track bar because the track bar attaches to the diffs and frame ... not the tub. As for the steering wheel being turned to the right .. again it has always been like that. That Jeep had a very hard previous life as a farm toy for a 14-year-old kid .. then what looks like an accident that I mentioned about the body being twisted and crooked. Steering column connected to the tub .. the other end connected to the steering box .. tub being crooked and twisted can cause the steering wheel to "re-clock" just a bit. The steering box is worn out, therefore, allowing the steering wheel to go off center can add to it. Also .. I had driven the Jeep, I had flexed the Jeep up on ramps in between video takes .. it could simply be that the steering wheel is in a different position. I daily drive that Jeep 70+ mile a day to and from work. Taken many road trips of several hours each way. Removing those track bars did nothing but help the way it rides and handles. Me and many others have gotten a much better ride after removing the bars. What I would suggest is remove then and try it for yourself to see what you think. Its only 2 bolts per bar. I know this video was a long time ago but the video from the test back in the day of the CJ was a scam, they had to manipulate the Jeeps to make them rollover adding extra weight to one side and basically forcing them to rollover out of the hundreds of tests runs only like 2 or three rolled over and those were done by rocking them side to side at speed, hence the adding weight to facilitate a rollover

Im sure there is, but to be totally honest with you. I've never looked cause they are a waste of money. The factory airbox on a factory YJ flows just as good as an aftermarket high dolla set up. Yet .. the cold air set up looks way more cool!!

I know this was posted forever ago, but I ran across this today while working on a death wobble situation. I have an 88 Wrangler YJ with 4.5" lift. It does have a pretty big pitman arm drop to compensate. I've replaced the tie rod, drag link, all four ball joints and both front wheel bearings/hubs. It drove fine for one trip then on the way home I started getting the death wobble again when I hit bumps generally below 40mph. I had my wife turn the steering wheel while I went over all the parts and noticed that the track bar bushings and the extended bracket for the track bar on the axle moved about 1/4" when she moved the wheel. I realized that that bracket used to come loose on me and would cause this death wobble when I first put the lift on. Do you think remove the bar all together would eliiminate that or make it worse? I'm wondering if the bar being loose but still attached could cause the axle to just ping pong back and forth. Eitehr way, thanks for the video and I may pull it off just to see. The wobble is very easy to reproduce.

Depending on how old the lift is, you might want to check the spring bushings, shackles and if the bolts are tight. Depending on the characteristics of the springs, you might want to have the caster angle checked. I'm not going to say whether the track bars will fix it or make it worse. Typically death wobble is a symptom of other issues. If it was a TJ or an XJ, The track bar would be my first guess. Leaf spring rigs, there are other factors that can cause it as well.

It's actually a fairly new lift, bought new towards the end of last year. It had an old 3" lift on it before, but I need a little more flex. The shackle and leaf bushing are all new, and they are all torqued to specs from the lift manufacturer. I've double and more than triple checked them trying to find all of my wobble causing issues. LIke I mentioned, I've replaced so many parts so far and was in the market to replace the track bar bushings when I ran across this trend and your video among many others to just remove it. I'll work on taking the track bar off today and give it a drive. I can reproduce the wobble in my subdivision, or really any bump in the road.

Like you suggested, removing the track bar didn't fix my death wobble, or make it worse either. Smooth roads are fine, any bump that affects just one tire will throw it into the worse death wobble ever. I won't bother you for troubleshooting, as I know this problem can be so many things. I got about 4" of lift. I have quick disconnects but I've had my sway bar disconnected and tied up for almost a year now. I'll eventually take it completely off. I daily drive mine on both highway and backcountry roads. I've had no issues at all. Glad you like the videos!! Hope they help!!

I drive minimum 300 miles a week in mine. It is my daily driver and even road trips. No issues at all running no track bar. I have quick disconnects for my sway bar. I havent had those hooked up in over a month. Dont miss them at all. Thanks for dropping in! Have a great day!

With all stock suspension will this make any difference? I've only heard of people with a lift actually doing this, although most people put a lift on their YJ haha

Even with a stock suspension this can help. The leaf springs were designed to travel up and down. The track bar forces the leaves to travel at an arc which puts the whole suspension in a bind. So, stock or lifted , it helps. Hope this helps! Have a great day!

my stock '91 YJ was all over the road. My mechanic (I live in an apt. and cannot work on stuff) replaced the steering stabilizer and it did wonders.

You are welcome! I only cussed when the camera wasn't rolling! LOL . I would say shoot plenty of PB blaster way ahead of time. But it wasn't the nut that was seized up, the bolt was seized inside the metal sleeve. Not likely any penetrating fluids are gonna help much with that. Good luck!
