Such an amazing help!!! Thank you for posting. I lost the keys to my 1995 YJ and no other options worked. Except this-whoop whoop. The ignition must have been swapped out before, because the door & glovebox key the dealer cut for me from the VIN did not work. Thanks again.

Anyone who’s breaking this dudes balls for using that tool is brain dead. Why wouldn’t you? So you can say you did it without it? Wow. You’re a hero. Tools are there to make jobs EASIER. And a lot of times it helps prevent the stupid stuff from happening.

I removed mine without (but it was a bit of a PITA), but only because it was so late at night that all the parts stores were closed. Anything that makes a job easier or improves success is a good tool IMHO

Thank you for this, someone tried to steal my Jeep this week… with this video I was able to do this myself for less than $150. Now if it happens again I know what to do. The tools are cheap, the parts cheap. They jammed a flat screw driver into the cylinder, key no longer worked.

What would make the lock cylinder stiff to turn, to the point you have to physically back it off from the crank position?

I was able to make a tool to compress the plate. Started with a piece of sheet metal 4”x1.5” Drilled a hole in the middle to slide over steering shaft Drilled one hole on either side and slide some toggle bolts through it. Slide “tool” over steering shaft Loosely installed steering wheel bolt Tightened toggle bolts against plate compressing spring. Hope this helps someone

Your skull do you have a threaded nut insert in it or just the rubber piece that comes in it? I need to figure a better way to keep it from working loose over time.

Insert your key turn it slightly back towards accessory and pull the cylinder out. Takes about 10 seconds to change your lock cylinder

You don't have to take the steering column apart you can remove the lock cylinder with the key

As long as your key can be inserted in the cylinder you don't need to remove any of the steering wheel
