On April 27, 2024, jeepney drivers and labor unions gathered at the historic Kamuning Bakery Cafe in Quezon City for a press conference from 10 am to 12 noon.
The event, attended by representatives from various organizations including PISTON, KMU, and All Workers' Unity, announced strategies and plans for their transport and labor strike scheduled from April 29 to May 1, coinciding with Labor Day demonstrations on May 1.
Central to the discussion was the opposition to the government's deadline to phase out traditional jeepneys, mandating drivers to join cooperatives to purchase new, modern, and more expensive electric jeepneys or e-jeepneys.
The panelists also opposed Charter Change and other political controversial topics. They also expressed complaints on socio-economic and labor issues.
Panelists representing Pagkakaisa Ng Mga Samahan Ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston), Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) labor federation, Associated Workers Union (AWU), and Piston Women addressed the media, highlighting the challenges faced by jeepney drivers and workers.
The press conference served as a platform to voice concerns over the economic impact on drivers and the broader labor force. Attendees discussed the need for sustainable solutions that consider the livelihoods of workers while addressing environmental concerns.
