This is the song that made me fall in love with Belle and Sebastian, nearly 20 years ago. I still remember the moment I saw it on No Disco, the one hourly show on Irish television that came on just before midnight once a week that was dedicated to non-pop music on TV. Since then my life has changed in a hundred ways. I lost touch with my college friends, I grew closer to my childhood friends, my Dad passed away and in four week I'll marry the woman who, six years ago, I fell in love with. Every step of the way, Belle and Sebastian have been the soundtrack to my life. When things were going great and I was dancing, it was Lazy Line Painter Jane, Electronic Renaissance an Party Line. When it was tough it was We Rule the School, Slow Graffiti and Read the Blessed Pages and in between it was - and is - everything they do. I saw them at Electric Picnic last September and they were absolutely amazing, I'm raging I missed out on tickets for the Royal Albert Hall, but I'll see them again and I know that when I do, they'll be what they always are - heart-stoppingly great. Belle and Sebastian forever.

They are mocking the idea of all the shit going on in the world that their own won't take care of. I like the pretty and not the politics.

Okay, but that is the opposite to how I interpret the song. I think it’s humanistic, and expresses the loneliness and alienation that happens when you don’t look out for others. The people in the song are fakers not so much because they’ll never finish the book, but because it’s easier to abandon things and stay in.
@FeanDoe11 жыл бұрын
Because you're making blinkers fashionable And fashionably you'll say "All is equal in love and war" and "I'm sorry, but I've got some things to do" And you pretend to read a book you'll never finish till the day That the author dedicates it To A Century Of Fakers ... I just love it (:

Belle and Sebastian is making a believer out of me. There are several tunes that sound really good. A century of fakers and dress up in you are my favorites. I think your on to something Murdock; I feel a little of the 60s in you; in other words, brillant. Oh, the girl at the 00:55 second mark, I mistook her for louise wener of sleeper.

Ian Kurtis. And you Belle, don't go around saying you love me and all that bias because I have my records as well and I love listening to them, yes, I understand what's to listen your own records you can basically play them on repeat for years but just because they are yours so you don't really love me you just love listening your records and now that Merekel listen them, even more. So don't come at me saying you love me and all that...

There are people going hungry far away They've got nothing on their plates And you're filling your fat face With every different kind of cake If you ever go lardy, or go lame I will drop you straight away Oh that's the chance you're gonna take For every stupid thing you say There are people going lonely, and they'll stay Lonely far into the year Cause you're making blinkers fashionable And fashionably you'll say, "All is equal in love and war" And I'm sorry, but I've got some things to do And you pretend to read a book You'll never finish till the day That the author dedicated To a century of fakers They took your mold and they burned it On the fire in history today Yeah the author dedicated To a century of fakers He was an anarchist He tried his best but it wasn't good enough La la la la la Did I say I would see you soon? Well I'm sorry But I just came off my bike And my face is scarred And chance has barred me seeing you tonight I was over the other side of the city And if the truth be known I'd say That you look great from there Before you shaved your golden hair today Everybody's trying to make us Another century of fakers They took you mold and burned it On the fire of history today Everybody's trying to make us Another cool decade of fakers And everybody's trying to make us Another century of fakers Everybody's trying to make us Another century of fakers
