I am loving this guys perspective on stuff. Timeless advice. Very pragmatic & practical & basically nothing to do with guitar olympics!

Jeff is a genius. There's a reason that the greatest players and organizations ever wanted him around. From Jimi to Steely to Doobies to the Defense Dept. This guy has got to be the most underated guitarist ever as far as guitar mag 'polls' are concerned. The sound on Echos of Love by the Doobies is brilliant and I think thats Jeff too. The guy is an American Treasure.

Juat found out about these clips. First off, thanks beherenow777 for posting these - I owe you not one, but a few! This really is *the* thing I want to hear about guitars and guitar playing. Thanks a million, Jeff, and, thanks again beherenow777 for posting these! Hope to get the chance to jam together some time! Cheers!

this is obviously a lot older than that - 80s I'd guess, 90s tops - but of course, the information is timeless

@Nightwing690 So they wouldn't have to "ride his guitar level," i.e. chase his varying playing levels with fader volume changes, when a bit of subtle compression would achieve a good basic level. Plus it allows Jeff the ability to play harder and not distort the channel on the mixer. There's no way even a brilliant location mixer can anticipate all the changes an extemporaneous player like Baxter would throw in.

The old row about technique over creativity. I recall an article where Jeff said that, as a session player, you have to be hot for ANY musical trial. Not sure that Mr Marr could handle ANY situation as well as Jeff, because he is a stylist, which, of course is a virtue. Still, a few fancy sonics does not alone make a complete player and just STRUMMING with Bert Janch, ain't good enough. If it's all solo stuff like 'RIKKI' then, with respect, you have not really heard much of his work.

True words. Chet Atkins could've found his sound on a shoebox tied to a broom handle, with bailing wire for strings and clothes pins for tuning pegs

yeah that clean chourus delay sound that Andy Summer popularized was THE sound of the early to mid eighties. ...probably sounded uncool in the 90's, early 2000s, now it's retro haha.

Amazing how you rarely see Jeffs' name in any Top Hundred Guitar Players polls yet someone like The Smiths' Jonny Marr or 'The Edge' is. Hat or no hat. Strange world. Line 'em up with acoustics and we'd see who's best. Mr Baxter, no contest!

The Edge isn't really a guitarist as such - not in the sense of Larry Carlton, Jerry Reed or even BB King - but he stumbled on a sound, which was an old Nashville echo-trick, and used it to his advantage. The echo sound was used on a famous Nashville Song called 'May the Bird of Paradise fly up your nose' - I kid you not - but I don't expect that the Edge heard that in his development into a sound artist who just happens to use a guitar rather than a keyboard.

More than an ex-player. I think he and Donald Fagen ARE Steely Dan. Both founding members and the main two around whom other musicians were grouped. Least ways I recon that's how it is.
