That's patronizing, and inaccurate. He is not "allowing" Johnny to play, Jeff has said that he has not had such a creative collaborator for years. Johnny's skills are definitely up to par, he's been playing since he was a teenager in a band, and Alice Cooper (with whom JD founded Hollywood Vampires along with Joe Perry of Aerosmith), has said JD is a very, very good guitar player, so good that he gives lessons to Joe Perry. That's high praise from Alice Cooper, and Perry.

Johnny is a great rhythm guitarist. All the emphasis is put on him because so many people know him from his films but he could have been a rhythm guitarist for some great rock band in an alternate universe and would have blended in perfectly as part of the group.

I am not certain how much truth is in it, but I have read that he started playing guitar as a child, way before he got into acting. He was trying to get into music, but stumbled into acting. Ever what, I always thought he was good.
