My wife and I were so lucky to have seen Jeff with Steely Dan in April 1974 and with The Doobie Brothers in April 1977. As much as I loved his lead guitar on songs like 1973's "My Old School," I really admired his pedal steel playing on the Doobie Brothers 1973 ballad, "South City Midnight Lady." Going back even further, his pedal steel was the most memorable thing about Steely Dan's first recorded single, 1972's "Dallas."

THE BEST ALBUM OF THE DOOBIES ..... was NOT "Living On The Fault Line" ...... IT WAS THE CAPTAIN & ME ..... the songs are diverse and crisp guitar and punch to the bass and drums .... the singing is great as well. The ensemble then was wonderful with yet to leave for medical (throat) issues = Tom Johnston ! Each song is a winner. UKIAH & the title track especially.

I understand where he's coming from, but I don't personally like that one as much as several other Doobies' records. The title track is spectacular IMHO, but I'm not as keen on most of the other tracks. I always thought they covered "LIttle Darlin'" because they needed a single. Of course, "You Belong to Me" did well for Carly Simon. One thing I remember about that album was how thick the vinyl seemed to be compared to other contemporary albums. Lots of layering going on?

Being a Steely Dan fan I can certainly hear the influence Skunk Baxter and Mike McDonald brought over to the Doobie Brothers. Living On The Fault Line really stretched their abilities and it showed. May not have been their most popular album but I believe it was their best from a musical standpoint. They took chances that other established bands wouldn’t have.

I have to disagree. The Captain and Me is by far the best Doobie Brothers album and the most musically diverse in their discography too. Losing Tom Johnston and his rock and roll influence was a huge blow.

A fine album. My choice is Takin it to the Streets! Should have asked him about Tom Johnston pulling his 3 songs and leaving the group during “Livin on the Fault Line”.

Sucks that he wouldn't join their tour, totally understandable he had his own gigs going, much much respect, great album, Jeff and Tiran along with the current Doobies are history within the band but, "once a Doobie brother always a doobie Brother"

That’s why Skunk didn’t make a good Doobie! Great player.. for Steely Dan. Captain and Me or Toulouse Street dwarf Livin’ On The Fault Line.
