The current "industrial scientific complex" has become more like dogma due in part to scientists needing to keep their tenures, write books, get grants to continue the same old lines of research, etc. It seems like a sad era in science.

Your beginning to ask and confront science with the real questions here, Robert Kuhn, good interview. The way I personally see the question you asked here is to decide can the signs of the four forces leading to either attraction rules and repulsion rules be a by product of consciousness and free will. So its not so much the the nonmaterial question but whether the foundation of the known material world are modified in signs by free will reality.

It would be interesting to map the decisions and theologies of large groups of people to see the outcomes in their future. If there is a link between cosmology and consciousness then time will show us a wave of possibilities in our experienced reality, not so much as individuals but as a humanity. The lesson to be learned far into our future might be how we tune our consciousness within humanity so it is not a weak and random force but unified much like Iron shavings on a sheet of cardboard aligning shard by shard from a magnet underneath.

Consciousness is not just electric current in the brain, because then that current would generate consciousness, and that is contrary to the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Thoughts are patterns, system and order, the 2nd law of thermodynamics says that if the brain is a closed system (in other words; generating its own consciousness) then the brain will only increase in disorder and electrical chaos with time, and never be able to converge to systematic and orderly thoughts and ideas; so therefore consciousness with ordered structures in the form of thoughts and ideas must come from outside, and from the outside thoughts and ideas induce the ordered electrical impulses that take place in the brain.

RLK asked a question, that I wish lots of people would ask more often. Do you mean a "consciousness" that pre-existed, or the one that emerge over geological time? That's because the term is oftentimes not well defined. It ranges from a metaphysical assumption, to a phenomenological description.

At what point would it "emerge"? Is emergence even a scientifically defined concept, today? If it came about only in biological systems, what is it built up from? How does this building up produce something distinct? We might have more brilliant scientists and mathematicians than ever before and I hope this is an answerable question but I think we may have to keep trying to answer for- as Jeff says- centuries... or until we can no more.

@@icygood101 Yes. Biological systems is one way to draw the line. (Of course, one can draw it anywhere one wants.) But we know intuitively the difference between a stone, and a bacterial cell. The former strictly follows Newton's laws of motion. The latter seems a step up. It displays some degree of "automaticity". It's more complex than what Newton's laws would strictly dictate. It also has an "inside" and an "outside". It has an inner representation, an "internal life", which is a fractal mirror of some of what we mean be consciousness. The human version, is much more complex. (There was a recent CTT interview along these lines, which I thought was quite good.) Of course, none of this explains everything. Science is into mechanistic types of explanations. It is one surface of it. It doesn't explain the poetry, the "feel" of the experience. It doesn't explain "qualia". On the other hand, we know what mechanical influences can have on consciousness. Head concussions. General anesthesia, Alcohol. Psychedelics.

I did a degree in Psychology. My realisation was that consciousness is like the wind that blows the leaves in a tree. We may measure the movement of the leaves and say “ah there is consciousness” but consciousness is different from the brain, just as the wind is different from the movement of leaves in a tree.

What if it's simple.... Like maybe the cosmos knew that at one point in thier existence that they had to experience darkness to the fullest to appreciate how beautiful the light is ...because it matters.. darkness serves its purpose... When we sleep soundly and peaceful in our homes the lights are off ..there's a comfort in the darkness maybe knowing that the darkness is a beautiful background for the light.. it has to exist and it needs to be accepted and it's NOT difficult. But why do we only ever perceive a single event--a single part (or branch) of the wave function? What happened to the other parts of the wave and its causal effects? What determines what we see? Seems weirdly arbitrary. If I have to choose between MWI and conscious observation _somehow_ selecting what we experience, I'll go with the latter. But if that's the case, then there's something really weird and utterly inexplicable about conscious experience...but still not as inexplicable as the MWI.

What do you mean by "explain", do you mean how the mechanism of consciousness and the cosmos works or what exactly ? The question "why" something is there is just as meaningful as if one would ask "why this or that is not there" therefore not at all. The question about the "why" is superfluous if one is ready to accept it as a given that it is now there and will always be there because it was always already there. The cause of the thinking of the "why" arose at the same time with the decrease of the animal emotional life which was replaced by the invention of objects, thus the emergence of agriculture and animal husbandry. To ask for a "why" is irrational and has nothing to do with the experience of feelings, with the emotional life, philosophical questions are not real questions, they are irrational manifestations of the absence of feelings. When the famine comes, you will no longer have any questions that seem relevant to you.

What is so 'successful' about theorizing a bunch of quantum fields and declaring them fundamental? I would think quantum fields clearly arose in consciousness, not the other way around. 😄

Consciousness is just another product of physical laws. Unfortunately its deeply rooted in every culture that it is something "magical" and now needs some super advanced theory to explain it. Also hasn't the super position been explained already? Neil's Tyson once said it turns into a particle when I photon bounce onto it, and has nothing to do with human consciousness.

Consciousness is just a by-product of a number of cognitive, material and immaterial processes. It is a property arising from an arrangement, just like life itself. Simpler phenomena produce higher ones, and this has infinite potential outcomes. Even lifeforms that come in certain arrangements make super-lifes as happens with our society. There should be infinite possible phenomena, which are currently or maybe permanently hidden beyond the perception and introspection of our minds.

I am now all the people that went before me in me so in a way a continuance....We will never be aware of that. NAMELY consciousness is not produced by brain matter (no evidence for causation what-so-ever), in fact, to suggest matter gives rise to our unique perception is frankly insulting..the brain is many things..it is AMAZING beyond words..but producer of consciousness i'm not so sure...considering the evidence for non-local consciousness is growing by the day - namely the Near Death Experience or the Out of Body state - it seems to me the brain is merely the tool - the facilitator - that allows consciousness to flow through. Any materialist who wishes to attack this notion, I would ask you for your solid evidence neurons give rise to awareness. As for the whole materialist argument: you damage brain, you damage consciousness..that is fundamentally flawed.. does brain damage lead to impairment of consciousness ? NO - it leads to the impairment of the content of consciousness. Big difference.

I agree the brain is merely an interpreter of consciousness. If the brain is damaged it only has an effect on the person who’s brain it is. Like a damaged TV not displaying correctly or distortion of the image. Still, what is consciousness and what is the purpose of consciousness are still intriguing questions.
