I've been listening to this album for over 40 years, and never get tired of it. I especially admire the variety of instruments used and how they are mixed together, like the 'tar', voicebox, moog, 48 piece orchestra, electric guitars, and on and on.....amazing!

You're knocking it out the park, Barry. Tony Banks and now Jeff Wayne!!! Of the several music channels that I watch, it's mystified me that War of the Worlds seems to have been ignored. It's a total classic one off! Thanks, Barry.

I’ve listened to Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds so many times over the years that I know every line of Richard Burton’s narration by heart and often find myself reciting it. This album is a masterpiece-it still resonates as powerfully today as it did when I first heard it.

8 years old, my Dad gave me War of the Worlds on cassette. Blown away by amazing musicians. Have seen them play it live. What a privilege…

Cool interview. I don't think this project was as big in the U.S., though many of us are familiar with "Forever Autumn". I listened to it for the first time this afternoon. Not maybe the best thing to listen to since I'm already in a dark mood but I enjoyed it all the same. Richard Burton's narration is remarkable. Thanks for turning me on to this.

As a young child, I'd flip the headphones off my head with the first "UUUUULLLAAAA!" Scared me terribly but I loved the artwork. Dad reintroduced me at age 10. Great memories of a great album.

Brilliant Interview Barry. My Dad bought this on release in 1978 so I've heard it many many times and it is a true classic. The Album Artwork is superb and easily one of the best. Fantastic that Jeff said he would love to put a face to the name if you go to the Nottingham gig, what a great guy.

Fantastic record. It’s been one of my favorites since I first heard it in the 70’s. Herbie Flowers was a big influence on me as a bassist and his playing on this record is brilliant.

I remember buying the album when it originally came out. It was a bit of a gamble as I was a student with limited funds, but the artwork drew me in & obviously I knew & loved Forever Autumn, which was a single release. It was a joy to listen to & remains so 46 years later. Ullah!

Just from The Eve Of The War.... to have heard that intro piece. "..And yet, across the gulf of space Minds immeasurably superior to ours Regarded this Earth with envious eyes And slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us" Just imagine being in the studio when that was going to tape and in particular when it was being mixed and edited..... it must have been fluppin' amazing. Its an utterly timeless piece of work, a glorious album.

Really good stuff here Barry. It was fascinating to hear how Jeff got Richard Burton and Phil Lynott on board with the project. I remember at the time the UK music press were operating an almost Year Zero policy, anything that didn't conform to the Punk/New Wave agenda was critically reviled. However, Jeff Wayne's opus was what was selling in big numbers. Looking forward to attending the stage show next year.

Great interview Barry, I think WOTW is overdue for a Dolby Atmos mix, having bought the original two Cassette when it was released, then the vinyl, then the CD, the remixed CD, the SACD, the millennium edition CD, 40th Anniversary Vinyl and most recently the HMV coloured 1921 vinyl. Hopefully will get to see the live show again next year. I saw the first live show at the Albert Hall in 2007 I think it was but the stage set had to be shrunk down slightly to fit onto the Albert Hall stage.

The Jeff Wayne Spartacus concept album is a misfire after the wonder that was War of the Worlds. It works in parts, having Anthony Hopkins as narrator and Fish as a vocalist for instance, but the melodies and songwriting just aren't as strong. The WotW CD is in most charity shops, but Spartacus is as rare as hen's eggs, so most Jeff Wayne fans appear to have been equally disappointed. (Edit: Yes, I meant to put 'hen's teeth' as the Peter Hammill fan below pointed out)
@christopherdavies3079Ай бұрын
I actually have never seen War of the worlds in a charity shop but to the contrary I found and bought my cd version of Spartacus from a charity shop for one pound
@rikkinadir7979Ай бұрын
There's nothing 'rare' about "hen's eggs" - I've just bought six of them from my local Tesco....perhaps you meant to say "hen's teeth"?

Didn't he just copy Robert Calvert's ideas ? you know, that genius.
@PaIaeoCIive1684Ай бұрын
Possibly. I wonder if Jeff heard the Captain Lockheed or Lucky Leif concept albums -- both released years before WotW -- and thought: 'Hmm, wonder if anyone's done that with War of the Worlds?' Actually, the idea's much older than Bob Calvert as the Who's Tommy had a similar concept/guest musicians/narration structure.
