Dave, thank you for this and all the reviews and videos you share with all of us who have a passion for the outdoors and bushcraft! I just purchased this knife in the hammered finish with the pathfinder sheath with a 1/2 inch firesteel loop. I am very excited to receive this knife. It will be my number one go to knife. I am a grad student for counseling/therapy and I work at a treatment center for young men as well where I am often taking young men out in the outdoors and I share all you have shared when I build my fires for the guys. Your experience is being passed on in very blessed ways! Thank you again for all you do! Tony.

As always, Dave, Great video, and Fantastic lesson. That knife sure is impressive. Working that Oak it showed some real toughness that is needed in a knife, at a price point that is hard to argue over. Good stuff.

I stomp around in a rain forest and I don't see a lot of hard wood. Also..my tree knowledge is lacking.. I'm not even sure I have hardwood. A buddy and I made a fire.. in the rainforest.. on a rainy day. But I didn't get the making of the fire on film.. damn! Digging the knife though.. hopefully they'll be back in stock when I have the money. Thanks for the video

@ShelsleySpecial10 жыл бұрын
Don't like the convex grind much, prefer Scandi for ease of sharpening and the wedge action in splitting/batoning wood. 1/8" thick blade is a bit thin to be bullet proof for me too, also less effective when battoning wood as it acts like less of a wedge than a 3/16" blade. Not saying it won't stand up to 90% of abuse that most of us could throw at it, but not bullet proof like 3/16" or 1/4". I thought Dave always maintained 3/16" thickness was the bare minimum?
@averageoutlaw10 жыл бұрын
In my opinion in a woodland environment your one tool option should always be an axe, in a survival situation an axe will speed things up, and male shelter and firewood more available, let's face in a 72 hour scenario the chance of obtaining meat in need of butchering is pretty slim, especially where I live where flint is eveywhere, you can recreate 100 scalpel sharp blades by smashing a rock if you really need to butcher game
@DavidCanterbury10 жыл бұрын
I agree if you happen to have an Axe strapped to your belt when you canoe flips over LOL- But generally I would take a Axe as well, but it is not practical to think you may have that if everything else is lost
@MysticKnight3810 жыл бұрын
***** I do believe I Have seen you with your tomahawk on your belt. Sorry had to play devil's advocate...lol. It is a good looking knife though,but I get shudders when I see someone battoning and using a knife as an ax. Yes, I know it is nice to have if you need it and you are just showing it is capable of doing it.... still...
@DavidCanterbury10 жыл бұрын
MysticKnight38 A tomahawk is a far cry from what I call an Axe brother, gotta be honest
@DavidCanterbury10 жыл бұрын
MysticKnight38 However I would never deny an Axe is a great tool if you have and can hang onto it for sure, and If I only had one tool I would choose and Axe, but I am more likely to get stuck with my knife
@MysticKnight3810 жыл бұрын
***** I would class a tomahawk in with a hatchet in the capability of processing wood. Hatchet has a heavier head but a shorter handle compared to the tomahawk. The tomahawk will have a faster head speed because of the longer handle... it all comes down to inertia and the force delivers on the strike. All in all I think it is an even match. It just depends on what you prefer to use. On a side note I started to carry emery cloth with me to use to sharpen my knives if needs be (46 grit and 100 grit) My field knives are all scandi grinds. I tried this at home first on a mora q that needed sharpening just to see if it would work.... it does,it is not the fastest of tasks but it works. The way I do it I sharpens both sides at the same time so you wont roll it over and no burr. Cost, weight, and space needed is very little. Two downsides are it isn't fast and it only works on scandi and flat grinds, you will never get the angles right with a beveled or a convex grind. Wouldn't even call it common man.... more like cheep man.
@KevinSmithdc10 жыл бұрын
The Jeff White Bush knife is very well made, very durable, and does a lot of things exceptionally well (batoning wood, chopping, carving...even fine detail work). It's very rustic in appearance. The one in the video that Dave is reviewing has a hammered finish; mine is bead blasted. The one thing the knife does NOT do well is throw sparks with a ferro rod. My experience is consistent with numerous others who also have the knife. But perhaps if I took a bench grinder to the spine and sharpened it up a bit.... Still, a pretty damn good knife for the money.

I've had this knife for almost six months now. Bought it off Dave's store site after researching Jeff's knives all around online. This knife is amazing, did a full review on the store site, for the money, this knife is bomb proof. It's the only knife I use! Can't afford many $300 knives and in my opinion, just as good as a $300 knife.

I just found out about this knife and am amazed. I'm so confused I guess you could say at the price. How is a beautiful hand forged made in the USA knife retail for $60 $70, its amazing. I hope that Jeff white as the demand goes higher doesn't skyrocket his prices. And to you Dave I thank you for being the incredible human being you are. Keep up the amazing work! -Sincerely, Ellis outdoors

Lord knows I love GOOD advice. Knowing you can depend on your knife and your ferro rod is about the best knowledge you can have as it boils your belief in your kit down to rock bottom basics. I'm pretty sure there is always some cordage in your pockets, too, Dave... LOL And knowing what Dave wears is almost a freakin' tent, all you need is your SS canteen. Who goes out without a canteen? No one I know. Even a newbie carries water.

That looks like a nice knife. Im using the ESEE 4 uncoated right now and it seems to be filling the need. Keep up the good work Dave. We don't really have very many hardwoods in the Rockies. Its mostly pine. And Im with averageoutlaw carry and axe. It makes making a fire a lot easier.

***** Dave I know this video is a little old but I'm kind of on the fence about the Bush and Bush HD. The one here looks like 3/16(HD) but maybe not and from the pictures or at least now they look to both have a lanyard hole now. I have a feeling I'm going to wind up buying the Hammer finished Bush and Polished HD before it's all said and done. It would be really nice to see them side by side but I realize that's not exactly realistic unless you can show them in comparison in the next new Jeff White video you do or something. Thanks for the videos, I've gone down the rabbit hole watching entire playlists for hours and hours many times.

The best thing about a Jeff white knife beyond the rustic looks is how well his heat treated 1095 responds to a strop, Holds an edge then easily strops back with leather to shaving sharp, Darn good stuff at a reasonable price.

Dave, We have a great way of determining what we use for fire making tools around my area. First it has to be able of giving a sustainable flame source to dry out the material to make a fire. Second, we envision how simple it is to use by way of would _______ be able to build a fire using this method? Fill in the blank with the family member who is the most inept at even the most simple things such as fire, shelter and security. If you can answer yes to those questions then it goes into the pack. Always pack for mister Murphy he usually is the one with your life in his hands.

if you still feel the same way about this knife, with it having an 1/8th inch spine and all, shouldn't the pathfinder trade knife do the same as well? the specs are very close.

One thing that I really appreciate about Dave Canterbury, is that he is one of the few instructors who really emphasizes that HE is always learning, too. He proves this by his wonderful evolution as a woodsmen, documented on video. He was always very skilled, but I have noticed a higher & higher level of craft in his approach over time. It is humbling, inspiring and something we should all strive to achieve.
