This was one of two songs that became huge worldwide hits during 1967 which gave that summer the nickname "The Summer Of Love" (the other being The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love"). But that summer also saw the war in Vietnam continue, war break out in the Middle East (won by Israel in just six days), a civil war breaking out in the Nigerian province of Biafra (most of it's casualties were civilians who starved to death), and deadly riots in Detroit and Newark. Maybe the younger generation of that era was trying to say (or sing) a message to those in power.

I was born far too late to have heard this when it was current, and I mourn that, because this is amazing. Without Jack Cassadys bass the music would be pretty basic and boring. Simple chords strummed casually with an occasional blast of lead guitar. The bass is the real lead instrument in the song.
