Absolutely breathtaking rehearsal recordings of Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon from the Winterland Auditorium in 1967. Must-hear for all Airplane-heads :)
On a side-note, I'm sorry, but youtube only allows me to put 10-minute videos up... therefore I could not upload the entire ~45min recording.

Gorgeous, gorgeous music- my favorite band from my favorite era. Thank you so much for posting it. But "everything was peaceful" in 1967? Detroit and Newark erupted in riots. Over 11,000 Americans died in Viet Nam. Part of the impact of the SF scene was its focus on peace in the face of dramatic violence.

There’s turmoil in the US today ( Aug 2020). Racism everywhere, unrest, gross economic disparities, a mismanaged pandemic. Where are the f#*king bands like The Airplane, Dylan, CSNY, Creedence, Marvin Gaye, the Doors etc speaking out and calling out the BS, social injustice, etc? Remember when the music, as a voice of a generation, tried to hold power accountable? Kent State, NAM, Nixon, - there was outrage. Come on young people, wake up and get furious about the mess you’re inheriting. If you don’t speak out nothing will change.

Always one of my top Airplane tracks! Love this song because of the way it's structured it always allowed for maximum adlibbing and experimentation by all of the very talented members of the band. This is one of those J.A. tunes that is different in each performance. Like "Other Side of This Life". Grace's vocals in this version here are astonishing. She had a way of singing rock music in almost a jazz style, like scat singing of Ella Fitzgerald. I love her backup vocals as much as lead vocals!!

One thing that strikes me bout this band is the balance between the vocals and the instrumental elements..Essentially the instrumental could have totally drowned the vocals but they don't..Jorma/Jack especially are great accompanists..No matter how far out and loud they get with their jamming they always bring it down again for the vocal harmonies to come thru..

There's nothing like early Airplane. If only they would have cut down the touring a little and taken a little more R&R and spent more time in the studio they might not have burned out so early. Cool hearing certain signature JA riffs "in the making". Like Marty Balin and Grace's pushing-the-edge-voice blend in "Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon"; and, for example at 5:00, as Jorma and Jack do up the syncopated psychedelic thing that progresses into a folk melody-like, all along Spencer Dryden driven drum line, and a mysterious-to-me keyboard part. They were known for their adventurous spirit, like Paul Kantner's science fiction visions. Great music.

Well, folks, I was 14 back then - and I lllooovvved that scene and its music! I wonder if this planet ever saw a better year than 1967!!! I am sure, people of later generations will still talk about that great era! And - last but not least: Everything was peaceful!

it's no use trying saturday afternoon for me. this song was meant for me when I was a kid but I did not even know of its existence. pop warner football games, little league games, riding my bike, my first kiss was on a Saturday afternoon, tromping in the snow, playing atari, eating out with my parents and my brother, smoking a joint with my brother, basking in the sun, poolside, doing yardwork with my dad. but now, saturday afternoons no longer have those memories for me. maybe i can try again?
