iirc the origin of Balloon Fight was that Nintendo had Satoru Iwata and HAL mock up a version of Joust to show to Atari back when they were trying to get Atari to distribute the NES in America. Iwata liked Joust so much that he took what he'd learned about its physics to make Balloon Fight.

I first experienced 1942 in the late 90s/early 2000s era of emulation, when things were mostly fine but some games had problems. I 100% thought the audio emulation was broken, I didn't think there was any way it was supposed to sound like that. Holy shit

I've only played the Amstrad version and it's equally erm ... that. Although there gets a point where the projectiles get lost against the background. Cool.

I think this may be the most gratifying video I’ve ever seen because I got Circus Caper from my cousins as a kid and I got stuck at the *exact same spot* with those gators. That game drove me NUTS and 20 years later I’m vindicated!!

Feels like at this point, Jeff's said Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus out loud more than anyone in existence. As a kid, I thought Caveman Games was a fucking hilarious product. And since that's the only version of Bad Dudes I played, I just assumed that's the one everyone liked.

I've never heard of Trog before but if I had that game as a young kid I would have gone nuts for it. A Pacman power fantasy with a dinosaur that eats people? I would have stood up and danced to every victory screen and I think the science is undervaluing that aspect.

I was 100% that child. It was NES game where I could get past the 3rd level, and that meant a lot to me. I also thought the dancing was rad, y’know 90s.

Without the arcade sound samples of “OOOh!” and “I’m bad!” This Bad Dudes port is straight up ass
@IgnatiusAlpha8 ай бұрын
Balloon Fight is a classic no doubt. So is Galaga: DEMONS OF DEATH. Pinball Quest is interesting; never saw that one until now! 1942 has a bangin' soundtrack that goes hard. Bad Dudes may be a subpar port compared to the arcade version, but I didn't mind it that much and that Stage 2 music absolutely slays. The most interesting one to me in this bunch though was Circus Caper. I have to look more into that once because I refuse to believe it's worse than Athena.

May be nice if the games were highlighted (or texted) with a color/symbol reflective of their general genre to make eyeballing the list a bit easier as things move along when one is considering where a similar game would place so could get an immediate gauge (& reminder of older games already played from said genre) when looking to place something new; e.g. sports games highlighted blue, so when looking to place R.B.I. Baseball, could immediately locate and be reminded of Dusty Diamond and the original Baseball.

Someone has to say it: Famista actually got started in 1986, and Namco published a new one annually on Nintendo systems through 1997. The World Stadium series, which is basically just Famista divorced from Nintendo, showed up on PC Engine, PS1 and PS2. There's also Kyukai Dochuuki, which is basically a mashup of Yokai Dochuuki and Famista on the Mega Drive. It's not very good!

Balloon Fight reminds me how good the music on black box NES games were. Also the band YMCK are masters of making crazy complicated versions of this sound, and in fact were hired to do the music for the first party Nintendo puzzle game PiCOPiCT/PiCTOBiTS which features all re-arranged classic NES game music. The re-arranged Super Mario Bros castle stage music goes so hard it's silly.
