I got one of those last year, it was junk and cut wrong. I had to cut a clear sheet of plastic to cover the viewing windows. The frames were so skinny you could easily fit 11 in a box and the bees hated the "waxed" foundation. Wonkey comb everywhere, I had to be super diligent to keep scraping all the wonky comb. Glad they listen to input.

Here in Australia we are getting the identical product flogged by the cheaper suppliers and they are manufactured in China, what would the Chinese know about bees and honey as they have people hand pollinating due to the amount of toxic chemicals that they frequently use on their agriculture, they have virtually wiped out bees and other pollinating insects. Sorry although I am a Quaker and feel for them in their self induced dilemma I would be concerned that the lumber would also have been treated, I like my bees way too much to try the stuff.

Nice that they listened and made improvements. I received the older type kit for Christmas. I wouldn't have bought that brand based on your previous video. Since I was going to start beekeeping with 2 hives I bought another set so everything would match. One deep and one medium had cracks and one set of deep frame side pieces didn't fit the top bar. I contacted Vevor and they sent me an entire new kit to make it right. I'm not sure how long they'll last but I'm using them. I did add plexiglass to the observation windows, and I like them. My husband who isn't a hands-on participant in my new hobby, actually looked through the windows last weekend with me. I added more wax to the foundations and that helped. I put one foundation in the super without extra wax and they didn't touch it. I also upgraded the bottom boards to Hillco plastic screened bottom boards and I like them.

Glad to see Vevor did listen and make adjustments. I agree with you on the pressed glue joints especially since they are only protected by bee's wax. I've done outside doors just like that, using 1x6 pine that were put through a planer and table saw, primed and painted them with exterior paint. Even so, some of the glued joints have minor separation and thats with exterior/interior cross braces. The cedar they used would be a better wood for exterior purposes ie climate but don't know how long bee's wax would hold up to the elements. Thank you Mr Ed and God Bless!!

As a woodworker I know a glue joint is only as good as the glue that was used, especially if the joint is simply a butt joint. If a finger joint is used, adding surface area to the joint, at least more gluing surface is made available and perhaps adding to the longevity of the connectiveness. Hopefully the glue they used was water resistant and the joint holds for a long time. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Phil. Mr. Ed

Solid bottom board; necessary in the Southwest. Two observation windows on the sides of the hive. All you are going to see is an end frame. That's the last one to be filled. It would make way more sense to have a window in the back. Inner cover has exit ports- the only entrance/exit should be at the bottom. "Waxed", I bought waxed foundation from Amazon, a Chinese supplier, and it was coated with paraffin. The difference was readily apparent. Where is this company located? According to Vevor, the box is glued up cedar. Time outside will tell if the glue joints fail, but I doubt they will, given the superior waterproof glue technologies available. Also, the wax coating should help resist water for a long time. The dovetail joints are needed for assembly because they hold without glue, and gluing would not be possible with a waxed joint. The dovetail joints are probably the weak link since they may separate. But again, the wax should help.

They should be food grade plastic. But I bet you there not. I am in a wheelchair & would love a Flow Hive. Their panels use Dovetail joins & are solid pieces of wood. They also use food grade plastic. A Flow Hive wasn't designed for people to be lazy & not look after their bees. They are big on people looking after their bees. Well Jeff I see ware your coming from with all that gluing. I don't know if you noticed door frames for a house is a bunch of glue ups. The thing I can tell you is keep up with the wax maybe at least once a year and I'm just guessing. Oh I hope you and family and friends are safe with all these crazy Tornadoes.

Hello. Two questions. The transparent plate is to see the population of the hive, that is, is it a strong hive? The other, why is the hole in the lid oval or elongated, how do they feed through that shape of the hole?
@JeffHorchoff4 ай бұрын
Observation windows are very common on beehives, it allows the beekeeper to see their bees without opening the hive and having bees come out. Very often the hole on the inner cover is to allow feeding sugar water to the bees internally instead of externally. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Gaston. Mr. Ed

Thank you very much Mr. Ed. Any doubts will be clarified and explained. From what can be seen, the windows have to be made of a special or particular transparent material, considering that it must adequately isolate the interior temperature of the hive from the outside. On the other hand, I thought there was some difference between the circular holes and the oval holes on the lid, but from what you point out, both fulfill the same function as a feeder. Of course I follow your exploits constantly, because I receive updated videos because I subscribe to your channel, but I would not dare under any circumstances to do what you do, I'm not crazy, XD. God bless you.

Mr. Jeff VEVOR has a lot to work on customer service wise last year I bought one of their extractors and I had no issues it was well built and an excellent asset to my business. Potentially the ports allow more moisture into the hive. That alone is a no-go for me.
@JeffHorchoff4 ай бұрын
As the bees will close off any opening that will allow air to go where they don't want it to go, that is not an issue for me. However, as the bees will also cover the plexiglass over time, it seems to me a silly novelty, and I would much rather have the handle holes in the sides than the window. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

There is no way I would use a hive box that has been made out of bits, buy cheap buy twice. Also I've just looked on a UK website and they give a 12 month warranty, I have boxes that are 8yrs old.

I'm with you on that, solid sides are less problematic. I have boxes that are over 12 years old....but only a few. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

I have one bottom box left from last century, but the base board needs to be removed- its plywood that is de-laminating. I will refurbish it with a solid board and it should last longer than I do!

I watched a video by Fredrick Dunn. It had me wondering. Do you notice any jumping spiders around your hives?
@JeffHorchoff4 ай бұрын
I really have not noticed the spiders, though I have seen a few when out working the bees, I see more lizards and roaches than anything else. I love watching Professor Fred's videos as well, he's such a interesting man and so full of knowledge. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Here I am In Carmel Valley on my family property with my bees and chickens. I had a hive go down , no bees left in box one day . They left some dead brood on a few frames and some honey as well. I am wondering how messy it would be to spin out the honey in my extractor. Would the larva be extracted as well tho most is capped but some has just the small poked out start of the bee coming out. With the centripetal force of the extractor pull the lava out of those tiny holes in the capping? It’s about a six or eight sq or round inch area of honey on each frame. I’ve learned a lot from just the few videos I’ve watched on your channel, but I don’t know if you’ve done a video on this subject. I could sure use this honey.
@JeffHorchoff4 ай бұрын
An extractor is a very helpful tool when processing honey, and by using one, the comb is only uncapped leaving the frame with all the wax on it. My opinion, I would use the extractor. However, if brood is still in the frame, make sure you do not uncap it or else it would be spun out in the honey. I hope it works for you. Thanks for watching. God's peace Julie. Mr. Ed

Hey Jeff! Nice video my friend. Vevor sent me the exact same kit to review recently. As with everything, I thought it had some pros and cons. I do appreciate the wood and heavy wax coating. My review can be found here if you are interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/haCtpnejrrqrkNUsi=YQiF-Y2bHGkEiRvl Also, I can’t tell from your video but I don’t think you removed the protective film that coats the plexiglass. It should be on both sides and I had to use a box cutter to get it started to peal off. The windows are MUCH more clear and viewable after removing. Cheers and God Bless!
