I have the 140 occam, perfect for Minnesota keeps the boring terrain interesting and can handle the double black at Duluth. I have also found this bike is amazing for manuals on trail. It’s a lot of fun to see you make a review with my same bike and a very similar riding style.

I'm in MN as well and looking to go up a bit from my SantaCruz Tallboy. I have been riding in Duluth and other spots around here and the Tallboy just gets a bit harsh on rougher stuff that seems to be happening more and more often. How do you guys/gals feel about the LT version of the Occam for mainly MN and trips out to the SW?

Thanks for the video. I ended up buying an Occam 2020 after your reviews, and obviously testing it myself, lol. I love that you provide a general comparison against other bikes and a general overview on quality. We do not have chance to test material as you do, getting that feeling from people like you will help us. If the bike is playful or similar, it is not that important, I cannot even manual in a bmx. How confortable it rides in even, uphill and downhill, performance of the frame, stock wheels and tyres for example, thats very important for a buyer

Glad you enjoyed the new Occam! We haven't had the chance to ride it yet, but our guess at its ride characteristics look to match up with your review. Orbea just made the quintessential trail bike even better. Can't wait to see your thought on the Rallon!

Thanks! It's been a blast! I haven't even gotten into trying different spring rates and my own parts, either! Though I might have to park the Occam for a bit and just focus on the Rallon, that thing should work great on the more bike park style trails that are closer to home for me!

I have been on a 2021 Occam with a Fox 150 for a year, such a killer bike! I have a 2022 on order but with a DPXII air rear shock. I do think the longer stroke shock might be a bit better for bigger guys. I would agree on the bike and handling, that is what makes it so awesome. Great for central Texas tight rocky and technical trails and I have taken it to Angel Fire doing DH, Sedona and Bentonville. If want a "capable" bike that is still a lot of fun and nimble check it out. I got mine from Wes at Velorangutan in Austin, he ships everywhere and orders his stock bikes in the custom colors... very cool and a great guy to work with.

Would love your thoughts on coil rear shock. I am coming away from a sb130 lr, I loved that bike, but for long 5-hour rides it felt exhausting, and I want something that I don't have to charge so hard. I am debating b/t the new Float X or the new DHX. I have never ridden a coil, but hear a lot of good things. I ride most northern and southern utah, and prefer steep/tight natural alpine trails.

@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed Жыл бұрын
Hey Ed, I’m sorry but I don’t have tons of experience with Orbea sizing. That said, I’d probably think the XL would be safer. While it’s bigger than bikes from 10 years ago, it’s still a pretty short bike compared to the modern enduro/trail bikes out there. For only natural, tighter tech trails, the L would be great. The XL would still be pretty nimble, but more stable on anything scary. Hope that helps!

Right now i found a 2022 new for about $2100 Canadian. If its literally the same bike than ill get it (just different colours for yr change). I mostly ride natural quite flat singletrack locally and like technical (not very downhill focused) riding. But I also take trips to the mountains with long days in the saddle and would like to try some local XC/Gravel amatuer races for fun with ligther tyres. Bobby, very little is different on this Occam than the other one I rode. Just the linkage and shock. A few others have asked about the 160 fork- I am guessing but I would think the bike was built around a 140 fork for the most part, so I'd hesitate with a 160. I'll ask the orbea guys tho!

@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jackson, the medium is a tad small, but overall works fine. I'm 5'8". No, the HD4 is more confidence inspiring. It's slacker and longer feeling, and has much more progressive suspension. But the Occam is a lot easier and more efficient for flatter, chunkier, less bike park style terrain.
@jack91522
@jack91522 3 жыл бұрын
@@JeffKendallWeed The reason I asked is because the medium HD4 fit me well and I loved the bike. The small Rallon has the same geo eventhough their size chart puts me in a medium which sounds pretty big. The occam geo seems to be overall smaller and the medium might be perfect. Sizing is confusing. So I'm thinking since the medium HD4 fits me well, why shouldn't I just purchase a bike using the reach and stack numbers of the HD4 even if it puts me in a small or extra small?

@DullBoyJack
@DullBoyJack 3 жыл бұрын
I really don't think adding 20mm is too much. It will raise the bottom bracket and slacken the seat tube a bit, but I think it's worth it. On top of that you can run more sag so that your ride height doesn't change that much, and the fork will be plusher too. Hell, I put a 120mm fork on my old hardtail that came with an 80mm (don't do that)

I had an occam but the xl was too short for me being 6.3. It was a fantastic bike but it felt too tall at the front which made it feel short. Went for a ripmo in xl and fits me perfectly. Strange how numbers are similar between bikes but fit is a lot different. Orbea needs to drop a couple of cm off the head tube length I think to make it feel less tall.

So slamming the stem didn’t make it fit better? I’m 6.4 so that’s concerning that it didn’t fit you well. Funny how the Ripmo has the exact same reach but fits you better just because of the lower stack?

I'm thinking 160mm fork??? :-) Little longer wheelbase, .5 degree slacker, and maybe that would help the stability at speed a bit. I'm pretty sure the Occam has an integrated headset, but the new 9point8 angleset might be another option to get even another degree. At that point...I guess it turns into a wannabe enduro bike. I enjoyed riding the Occam as well, and I think it's a really good bike. It's definitely not as stable feeling at speed as the Ripmo. I didn't get the chance to take it on a long trail ride, but I would have liked to compare the pedal efficiency a bit more, because unless I felt considerably fresher at mile 15 or so, I wouldn't see a reason anyone would choose the Occam over the the Ripmo or Ripmo AF. To me, they felt very comparable in climbing, but the Ripmo is just a more capable bike, as you alluded to. Maybe it is a "more capable trail bike" with the extra travel, but in a way, that's sort of the spot where the Ripmo lands and what has made it a desirable bike for so many riders.

I was thinking about a 160mm fork as well, i wonder if the saddle position would be too slack for steep climbs, my current bike has a 73 degree STA, it's a hardtail but the fork is fully extended on steep climbs, when it gets above a 10% grade and it's rocky it starts to be very noticeable, i'd like the STA to be a bit steeper so i slide forward on the seat, but it's not ideal for me.

@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 3 жыл бұрын
Well, that's measured with stock tires, I had a DHR II in back and the bike certainly felt steeper than my Ripley AF. But I think the overall set up works awesome in the right place- more natural trails in areas that arent crazy steep. I'm excited to get into dialing this thing in!

Would it be possible to add a headset that allows one to slacken the head angle another degree? Would that change the ride quality much?
@DullBoyJack
@DullBoyJack 3 жыл бұрын
@@BBurton1231 yes, there are a bunch. I just put a Works Components 1.5° headset on my bike, which incidentally got it right to 65.5 too. Its more stable but definitely takes a bit more effort to get the bike to turn in now. Honestly I dont know if I'd do it on a brand new bike though. If you're gonna do that, might as well just get what you want out of the gate. It worked great for me though as my riding style has changed since I got the bike 4 years ago, and $80 is cheaper than a new bike!

That bike is so sick but why is it so expensive? Our companies need to make their own parts in the United States and come up with ways to make really cool stuff faster and more efficiently. In short these companies really suck at making bikes and the prices reflects that

440 chainstays are not that *short*, especially for a Medium bike
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 3 жыл бұрын
The short top tube makes the rear end feel a lot shorter. The first gen Ibis Ripley was like that, I believe they were 445 stays but the bike was *SO* easy to manual. The short top tube brings a lot of weight to the rear of the bike.

Jeff have you ridden the aluminium version of this? I’ve been curious how the carbon compares to the alloy in terms of ride quality (carbon sounds super stiff but is alloy too noodly?). Nice vids as always - cheers!

I've been on the alloy and it felt fine, hard to tell the difference between the carbon. My carbon occam doesn't feel too stiff, actually quite a plush with the suspension.

How is everyone just pretending you aren't using WTB tires anymore??
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 3 жыл бұрын
Ah I still have WTB tires on my Offering! And will continue to ride them mixed in with some other brands. I want to do a proper tire comparison, so I need more breadth of experience with Maxxis and Schwalbe first. Stay tuned!
