1/2” pipe has a 5/8 OD which is .618” that’s pass capacity, just so your viewers know it’s not the tools fault , you also loss diameter of the 3” cutting wheel on the metal rack you cut.. I’m a lefty, so have gotten used to having to use my not so skilful right hand with a lot of tools, but this is designed mainly for right handed people. Why can’t tool manufacturers make tools that can be used easily in either hand? Centre the damn operating buttons for a start. Just a lack of design ergonometry for ALL users.

I picked up one of these at my local Home Depot about 10 days ago. I gave it a workout cutting off about 50 quarter inch bolts. It make the job go easier that I thought. I usually use my Dremel to cut wire shelfs, but the new tool will work much better. One more thing, Home Depot’s inventory control for the new tools is terrible. I wanted the new HP sawzall, inventory showed they had 3 in stock, but the people on the floor couldn’t find them. I have tried 3 different stores and they seem to have the same problem. They have a few in stock, but not a location on where the product resides within the store. As a home owner, I am so vested in the Ryobi line and can’t justify buying into another line.

Home Depot's inventory control has always sucked. It is amazing how many times they show they have a number of whatever tool I am looking for in stock, and when you get there they have zero. But, as far as Ryobi 18 volt tools, I think they are great and by far the best value for the money. I have just bought the compact cut off tool, and I am sure I will be very happy with it as I am with all the other Ryobi 18 volt tools.

No offense but why are you testing two tools against each other using two completely different blade types? The one on the grinder is going to give you a much less smooth cut (as was apparent). You should have tested both using the cutoff wheel you demonstrated on the compact tool. I have a Ryobi cordless grinder that I generally use with cutoff wheels. It cost less than the compact one you reviewed, has far more cutting capability (depth) and can be used as a grinder as well. In my opinion skip the compact tool and get the cordless grinder that has far more capability.

At first I wanted to criticize you for complaining about "the tool not cutting all the way through drywall" because you were not guiding the tool flat on the shoe. Then I realized how the battery actually almost sticks into the working plane of the tool. This is a design flaw imo. The blade's diameter is just a tad too small to be able to say "its useful for *most* applications". Also that hex key storage solution is just ridiculous. Thanks for showing this to me, I won't buy a tool like that.

I bought one of these and find it VERY useful. I recommend this very highly for the jobs it can do. Your review was marred by your potential inability to use the tool properly. I am not impressed by your tool handling skills. Most builders/handymen/DIYers know 1/2" pipe is larger because the size reference is to the inside diameter. Why didn't rotate the pipe to make the cut instead of stating that the tool could not cut through the pipe? The guard is there to work almost like a circular saw sole plate. You showed the tool in a potentially unsafe manner balancing the tool blade on the material and making the cut. Obviously the tool is not an angle grinder replacement but a tool that serves a purpose (for which it performs an excellent job). Your various cuts could have been much better if you knew how to use the tool properly. Why didn't you run (and operate) the tool in reverse to cut the drywall? Easier to view the cut line and MUCH less dust over the tool and in your face! That TINY piece of paper torn from the back of the drywall is totally irrelevant to the strength and application of the drywall offcut (when applied to the job!). 99% of drywall cuts are score and snap. This tool is more beneficial for plunge cuts to create openings in drywall (usually after drywall installation). The rough edges of the cut plastic are a result of the FRICTION cut of the abrasive disk, NOT a flaw in the tool's capability. The rough cut would be produced by ANY tool using a friction cut blade. Cutting the plastic bucket was done in an UNSAFE manner (with the cut made opposite your hand holding the bucket). Even a friction blade will cause a severe injury to a hand or arm! The angle grinder comparison was somewhat invalid as different wheel types were used. Your less that perfect review may deter people from buying this tool, when it is a GREAT TOOL for many tasks. Most people want to know if the tool can cut through the pipe and most people don't have the skill to rotate the pipe around that's why I did not show it. And by the way you say that as if that's the way to make a cut that is not the proper way to cut a pipe even though many people do it that way. The proper way to cut through a pipe is to use a bandsaw that slices all the way through it in one shot. If people try to rotate a pipe in their hands they are likely to end up with a crooked cut but when you need a perfect cut every time like the professionals get you use a bandsaw.

I very much found your review useful. You tried a little bit of everything to give it a fair shakeout. That drop test was a toughy for any tool and all during the slowmo I was thinking it was a mistake. LOL I will point out a few things that might have given you different results. The first thing is, you said yourself, in the beginning, that the instructions said to use HP batteries for best results and then you tested the RPMs with a first generation battery. That's not fair or very conclusive. Also I've found that some tools in the Ryobi line, as well as others, just work better with higher Amp Hour batteries. That could be why it was cutting out on you in some of your tests. A larger battery or an HP battery may have done better. I don't think I ever heard you mention, and I know you never used, the reversing feature that would have directed sparks a dust away from you and the tool's cooling air intake. The plastics cutting test would probably have given a smoother edge with less melting if you ran at a lower RPM. I think you showed that the foot was more appropriate for cutting thin sheet metal and should be removed for thicker material. You probably saved some guy from messing up a DIY project if he had just jumped into cutting a material that wasn't appropriate for this tool, so good on you for stretching the tool to its limits. As for not cutting through 1/2" pvc pipe, most people don't realize that the 1/2" designation and all other pipe size designations come from a time in American history when pipe for indoor plumbing was made from lead. The walls had to be very thick to keep from bursting under normal water pressure and it was the INSIDE of the pipe that measured 1/2" and those walls made it much bigger on the outside diameter. That was the main material for pipe for many years and then new manufacturing techniques came along (and the understanding that lead consumption caused brain damage) and iron pipe became the standard material. It was stronger, so the walls weren't required to be as thick, but shrinking the walls down from the outside in, would mean that all the threaded holes in all the plumbing fixtures in all the homes in America would have to be replaced, because the outside of the pipe would be much smaller, so the walls got thinned out from the inside out and that kept the threaded outer diameter the same as for lead pipe and it still would screw into the older fittings. The wall thickness in steel/black iron pipe can be increased from the outside in to handle higher than average pressures and it still preserves the thread size. That is where Schedule 40, Schedule 80, 120 etc come from. The hole gets smaller and the walls get thicker as the number gets bigger. It is very rare to find a piece of pipe, which the pvc you were cutting is classified as, that measures even close to the nominal size, because that is the inside diameter from a long gone era. Tubing, which isn't what pvc pipe is, on the other hand, IS measured by the outside diameter. 1/2" tubing made of any material will be 1/2" on the outside diameter.

Johnny in the RPM section of the video you saw we got over 19K RPMS, which is close to the manual max rating. The battery I used did not hurt the performance.

I know the RPMs were close and I would certainly be satisfied with that result, but I feel that you really can't judge a tool if you don't heed the recommendations of the maker when you do the tests. The very first thing you did' after pointing out the recommendation, was to ignore it with your first test and all the ones that followed. You said the tool wasn't any good for cutting the wall board for the shower because it kept cutting off, but that wasn't with the recommended battery type. Maybe it will still cut off, maybe it won't, but we won't know from your video. I think those tools flash a code with the LED light to tell you what happened to make them quit, but you didn't show that either. Additionally, I was trying to make the point that, from personal experience with other tools from Ryobi and competitors, that a tool that works poorly with one battery SIZE will work better with a BIGGER battery, regardless of the tech that was put in the battery. Bigger is just sometimes better. It is the nature of Lithium batteries. I imagine that many of your viewers would love to see if the HP batteries are just a gimmick and that could be a content theme for a future video for you. You might try doing the unsuccessful test on the shower panel with a bigger battery as well, to offer new content. As a side note, I've come to believe that the shoe/foot/depth limiter gadget that was giving you much trouble may be more for providing something to run along a straight edge to get a straight cut on thin metal or vinyl siding or plastic. BTW, did you try the tool at lower rpms, as I suggested, to see if you got a better result on plastic. You seemed unhappy with the result you got doing it your way so that's why I made that suggestion.

Hello, you used bad cutting wheel on your grinder. I know that blade, I’m using it sometimes but it’s thicker than that 3” blade . Ryobi is ryobi, you have to use 6ah batteries to work for a while. I had ryobi tools and they failed. I still have one ryobi tool it’s a caulking gun and it’s still work probably because I just don’t use it ... :). For home owners it’s a great product for good price .

That 20,000 rpm is the "rated" speed. Not the actual speed. It's a way to classify what the tool is and the accessories that go with it. But the real question is how well can it cut unistrut. Inquiring minds... Also I wonder if you could glue a tiny magnet to hold the L portion of that hex key. Thank you for the review, it was well done. I so wanted this tool but you have shown me that it won't meet a lot of the needs I wanted it for.

It's too complicated to go into detail but pipe goes by nominal size rather than actual measurements. In other words, 1/2" pipe is not actually 1/2".

The fact that these cordless tools won't take a 5 in. cutoff wheels makes them a pain in the ass to use because you're constantly changing wheels and it's costly.

Turns out I got played because there was no charger or battery in the Box when it arrived so I am returning it to sender for a full refund. Looks like I will the purchasing the Milwaukee quik lok after all

@@jeffostroff It said it came with the battery and charger. Also said everything was never used. And there's a separate book of instructions for the charger that were still in the box with the instructions for the head and saw. Just a different version of the tool hack in my opinion.

Please stop using the portrait mode on your video recording device. I am thankful for the information and testing that you did but the lack of depth of field and the false bokeh was quite irritating.

Your entire statement made absolutely zero sense. First of all there is no false boceh, I used a very expensive lens with a very wide 1.8 aperture F stop opening to create that bouquet. Also I shot this thing in horizontal mode with my Nikon camera. Not sure what year were referring to when you said i shot it in vertical mode period
