Happy to see you would recommend the SLAB Genesis and surprised to see you would not pick the SLAB Ultra 3 you wore at Moab! I just picked up the same Genesis as my shoe of choice to fastpack the Tour du Mont Blanc next summer with my 25-year old son. I would have never dreamed of doing this without meeting you and watching your videos Jeff!

5:50 thank you for adding this piece about finding shoes that work FOR YOU. Such important info for people getting into the sport. I love everything Salomon (from downhill skis to running vests…I’m a Salomon fanboy) but their foot attire in any sport has unfortunately almost never worked for me (one pair of ski boots in the early 2000s worked). I still try their stuff on any time I need new footwear in hopes that it’ll fit well, but no luck in about 20 years.

@ agreed! But the trail runners I tried on in store a few months ago still had an odd pressure point for me on one foot (I even tried different pairs on). My foot is the problem, not the shoe.

Thanks for this good and informative video! One comment (only): This new Salomon 15l .. this is a no go... no quiver attachemt points! So comparabe with adv skin but less streach on the front pockets (flasks are hard to insert) and the poles... keep the front of adv skin and put 18l drybag on the back.. (Salomon dudes!!!)

Jeff, this year we all carried everything as if it was mandatory equipment (mandatory+required) with the weather we had! If you only carried mandatory equipment you would have a problem and you wouldn't get out of the race! Just a small observation about the equipment!You need more waterproof mitts versus warm mitts that you can wear over short cycling gloves or just warm running gloves when the weather turns to rain or snow!

I’m surprised they made that change in the first place! I wouldn’t want to head out without warm and waterproof gear. Crampons maybe not, unless there was actually snow in the forecast..

@@JeffPelletier The organization did not oblige the athletes to carry mandatory and required equipment from the beginning of the race, but as it was the weather, most of us carried with us a lot of the required equipment! The organization imposed mandatory equipment on the last days of the race (warm clothes, down jacket and ice spikes) after Ollomοnt till the end of the race,κnowing that the weather will change from Wednesday with snowfall!Also you can't know from the beginning of the race your mandatory equipment because everything depends on the weather!Not even from a video of the winner of the race François D'Haene,because there is a whole team behind him supporting him!

Can recommend the Nortec Trail Crampons - they are very light (since you will probably not need them anyway).

Helpful video, great gear breakdown. I was considering the Cross Season 15 for Hardrock, but surprisingly it doesn't allow for Quiver attachment (and I'm not a fan of waist bands to stash poles). I confirmed this with Salomon tech support. Odd given that this is a new(er) pack and intended for outings where one would likely use poles. Otherwise I agree it'd be a solid option! Ended up just using the Adv Skin 12, which was admittedly too small but it got the job done with the good weather this year. Thanks for all the info, maybe I'll make it to TDG one day!

Great point about not being able to attach a quiver, but it does include the usual drawstrings to attach poles along the bottom in the rear or in front, like other Salomon packs. I think the compartment may be too large in the back and the roll top design wouldn’t allow for a quiver attachment.

for what it's worth, I DIYed a quiver to an old XA25 (which also doesn't allow for it) for a week of fastpacking and it was fine. A bulkier pack means the quiver will end up more to the side, which may or may not bother your shoulder. I agree with you though, it's an odd move from Salomon not to prepare the pack for a quiver, even if the quiver would get in the way of filling the bag to capacity. These bags are expensive enough and it's great that they're so flexible - sometimes you need the volume, sometimes the quiver, sometimes just a place for a flask and a phone, but you can do it all with an adv skin 12. Shame that this apparently doesn't get extended to a 15L bag.

As an ultralight backpacker, I find it's often better to remove stuff from bags or packaging. Easier to pack > save space > save weight :) Great video, as always !

Agreed! But if it’s the bag for the crampons you’re referring to, that ripstop material works well to protect the rest of your gear.

Sadly, have to disagree that the Cross 15 is like a "bigger Adv Skin 12". It looks like it SHOULD be one, and I think it's almost marketed as one, but when I tried one (as I wanted something bigger than my Adv 12) I was disappointed. The rear compartment didn't seem to stretch like the Adv 12. The front mesh pockets were smaller coupled with the lack of the mesh kangaroo pocket across the lower back felt like a load of really easily accessible storage just disappearing. Overall, the storage may be greater, but it's provided in a different kinda way and so (to me at least!) not a bigger Adv 12, just a different model of vest. Similar, yes, but different. Also, hope to be racing TOR330 next year! :)

Some great information. I have been wondering, though, if you can use those Leki poles with something like those mittens? I'm on my second pair of the BD Carbon Z, and while I do like them, everyone seems to love the Lekis. And I also have a pair of heavier, adjustable carbon Lekis with regular straps (that I use for backpacking), and the build quality imo is just much better than BD.

Yep, you definitely can. These mitts aren’t too bulky around the wrist where the straps cover. But that may be a problem with more traditional ski mitts.

I should have been more specific about this. Salomon makes a good pair called the Bonatti that I’d probably carry to satisfy the requirement. But don’t expect them to stay dry for more than an hour or so, like any waterproof overglove in my experience.

Great content, really appreciate your honesty when it comes to gear and pointing out pro’s and con’s. What are your thoughts on the new Salomon S Lab Ultra Glide in comparison to the Genesis? I’ve really enjoyed the Genesis so much I’m on my second pair. With that said you really don’t see it on the feet at races much in comparison to other well known brands, it’s a sleeper.

S/LAB Genesis is an all-mountain shoe, whereas the S/LAB Ultraglide looks like it's more a trail cruiser.

When i read up on the Venta gloves. Some reviews on the Arcteryx website say the new ones they sell are not as good as the old. When did you buys yours? In case they are not the same anymore

Mine are a few years old, so that may be the case! I’ll look into this though and will see if I can get my hands on a new pair to ensure I’m not recommending a subpar product.

How would you compare the Cross Skin pack to the XA25 pack? I know you’ve used that previously

They’re very different in terms of both fit and capacity. The Cross 15 feels like a ‘big’ run pack and fits really well with no bounce. The XA15 really is more of a backpack.

It’s a very different shoe altogether, with a completely different fit. I think it’s more comparable to something like the Sense Ride but not to any of the S/Lab models.

Thanks. From Salomon I've so far only used the Genesis and S/LAB Genesis. In spring, I used the S/LAB in a 55K race. But after around 40k the 'sock' became a bit tight. I don't know why. In summer I ran the Swisspeaks 100 with the non-S/LAB Genesis. This was a good experience. Next to the 'sock' the toe box is different. A little bit smaller, but for me just ok. For mountains, I will stay with the Genesis for now. For flatter and muddier trails, I don't know yet.
