Every ticket costs the same for where you can't go... how darkly and wonderfully poetic

'And the sky spun around With her diamonds on fire We fought all night and then we danced In your kitchen You were as much in my hands As water or darkness or nothing Can ever be held It's just flashes that we own Little snapshots Made of breath and of bone And out on the darkling plain alone They light up the sky' Superb! Poetry at its finest!

Have listend to Richard Shindell perform this for years, a real favorite! Until today, I had no clue Jeffrey wrote it. Two definitive versions, one beautiful song! Thanks to both of you for brightening my day!

For those asking for the chords, it's a capo on the second fret, then Verse (x4): C - G - / Am - F - / Chorus (x2): G - F - / C - G - / Am - F - / C - G - / Every now and then he strums a chord a bit longer, and the second time through the chorus goes back into the verse progression, but that's basically it.

Northbound 35 Through the iron hills Under infidel skies It's two hundred miles to drive You won't be home I saw an elsebound train On the overpass In the driving rain Every ticket costs the same For where you can't go CHORUS: Mustang horses, champagne glasses Anything frail anything wild It's the price of living motion What's beautiful is broken And grace is just the measure of a fall So I rolled into your town I passed the smokestacks And the ore docks down off of Main street And the sky spun around With her diamonds on fire We fought all night and then we danced In your kitchen You were as much in my hands As water or darkness or nothing Can ever be held CHORUS It's just flashes that we own Little snapshots Made from breath, from bone And out on the darkling plain alone They light up the sky It's 51 and driving south Ain't it funny How things'll turn out I never even kissed you on the mouth When we said goodbye, goodbye CHORUS

This is a universally beautiful song for sure. But I'm thinking "Northbound 35 through the iron hills" has got to be I-35 coming into Duluth Minnesota. A surprisingly pretty drive when the highway winds down into the iron range and you can see Duluth and Superior

This isn't bad but the very best version of this tune, to me anyway, is the one with the sweet understated electric guitar (red 335?) and that (expecting) lady with the amazing voice. Besides their great contribution, Jeffrey delivers this song to perfection in thyat version. AFAIK it hasn't been up on YT for over a year :(

There are rare musical talents undiscovered and then there musical talents discovered rarely. Jeff is the latter. Amazingly poignant writer and performer. For those who have discovered him, it is like aged single malt scotch, the taste lingers long after the buzz has faded,

Caitlin Canty is by far the best female vocalist JF has sung with. Gillian is a better songwriter, but Rawlings is somewhat limited in style and not as skilled a vocalist or songwriter as Jeffrey. Though, considering his lyrics, JF may be a toxic person, blending love and physical combat. Kris Delmhorst may be able to stay with him (haven't checked lately), but that's not necessarily a good thing. Like his music, and almost all of his poetry, but can't sing some of it, any more than I can sing the Christian "Just as I am."

lol. Obviously others here disagree about the quality of the song (although he does it better on the studio version on "STRIPPING CANE - drags less).
