Instant sub! I'm trying to come back to the piano after something like 38 years and I really just don't know where to start. Or, I DIDN'T until I saw this. What an excellent way to get back on the keys, start building chord knowledge AND get a simple way to play the standards. Thanks man, seriously. This is great stuff!!

Hey, Jeff! TMI, but I'm a "I took piano as a kid" gal in the middle of a mid-life crisis. To wit, I spent a lot of money on jazz piano lessons a couple years ago. THIS. This information is actually what I needed to be able to do what I want to do. You make so much sense. Thank you.

Jeff, you are now one of my instructors. There is nothing (that I’ve seen) on KZbin as good as you. I’m late to the party, so I need to start at the beginning of your videos. That said I’m excited to dig deeper. All teachers should be as good as you. Thank you.

This is really a great way to start learning jazz piano for beginners. I believe in the KISS method: "Keep It Simple Stupid" because it always works best. There's hundreds of piano teachers on KZbin teaching all kinds jazz accompaniment, but I think this video is absolutely the clearest, most understandable, and most practical I've seen yet. Thanks!

For a moment I thought Jeff was going to cheat and not mention that All The Things.. already has the melody embedded into its essential harmony. You can almost play this tune entirely with just two fingers, if you want - shades of Bach. But there's a hidden trap. Exactly because the melody rests on 3rds and 7ths (powerful notes) a piano accompanist must avoid voice leading with those notes on top. Otherwise its overkill, and he kills the interpretation of the poor guy trying to play melody. Conversely, it sounds really cool to ghost the melody behind someone's impro. So as a pianist, you have to practise this tune both ways, (1) exploiting the melody and (2) avoiding it like its got leprosy.
@Gerard_20244 жыл бұрын
@@@Zoco101... One of the most perceptive observations I´ve read on You Tube. Sounds like you´re a professional piano player who knows exactly what he´s talking about. Any chance of your uploading a video turorial explaining and expanding on what you wrote. I would be very interested in your viewpoint. By the way, not sure what you mean by playing Bach with only two fingers ?
@Zoco1014 жыл бұрын
@@Gerard_2024 You are very kind. I'll try to explain. I allude to Bach's Two Part Inventions. In those there are just two melodic lines of single notes (one in each hand on the keyboard) that cleverly indicate the musical direction, zigzagging and terminating in a pincer movement. It is one feature of Baroque music. Happily, jazz has many correlations with Baroque music, and the pop song All The Things You Are (expropriated by us jazzers) is so like Bach that it's scary. At a pinch, you can play it with little more than root notes in your left hand and 3rds or 7ths in the right hand. Voila! Melody and bassline accompaniment. Jeff is right though - it sounds even nicer with three or more notes. I believe that having had a real struggle learning jazz piano actually helps me in my teaching, which is only ever a few students at a time. So yes, I've been wondering whether I should make some jazz tutorial videos. Thanks for your encouragement.

Jeff, this is exactly the simple formula I've been looking for to leverage piano with my saxophone studies. Hi Jeff, thanks for that very clear explanation. I will try to master open voicings first and then add the melody. I wonder if doing things in that order (chords and then melody instead of melody and then chords) will facilitate the fingering choice issue... hints on that topic (kind of "fingering strategy") would be a great help ! Thanks again for this video and have a great jazzy day 😀

Hi Jeff, I am all mixed up about finding the proper scales, arpeggios, etc. for improvisation over chords and have spent hours trying to find it without any good result. Even though I will consider myself always as a piano/guitar beginner I want to improve my performance over jazz standards/ bossa n. songs. If you can, please, I am needing just a simple tool/guide to sart with, or at least your best advice. I am 63 and not lazy at all. Thanks so much for your kind attention and patience.
@Zoco1014 жыл бұрын
Alberto, on piano the scales aren't so critical (for impro) if you know which chords you have to play. Think like a pianist, not a saxophonist. Harmony will guide you. Let your right hand stumble around, resolving harmonies as your ear deems necessary. For what it's worth: The main scales in this tune are Ab, C, Eb, G. Think of the chord Abmaj7, to remember the order.

This is an excellent tutorial. Jeff, do you have a video that you build on this concept of 3rds and 7ths with melody note on top that you can recommend? Like building up the chord in the left hand and adding more notes to the right?

how does this work with dimished chords? if you just played the 3rd and 7th for a dimished chord it would jist sound minor?

The video is 5 yrs old, but I still have a question in 2020. Does this mean that I should start learning the right hand with fingers 1 3 or 1 4 at the most so that I have 1 finger remaining for the melody note when I get to that stage?
@johandegreef38465 жыл бұрын
My teacher thought me the same, but add the 3rd or 7th in the left hand and play the other note (remaining 3rd or 7th) with the thumb of the right hand. Any idea why? maybe to hand more fingers free ni the right hand for the melody?
@questionman57 жыл бұрын
Great as always. Can this method work for charts that feature other chords? (eg. sus, dim, m7b5, etc) Thanks!

So quick question, when you're adding the melody, are you still playing the lead tones in the right hand and the bass in the left? Cause if your melody jumps a lot that could make it more difficult.

Hi Jeff...Quick questions, how do you handle chords such as C7#9? Do you play R, 3rd, 7th, #9? Is there a rule of thumb for voicing jazz chords in general, like always drop the 5th? Thanks so much for the lesson. It sounded great, and a great tune! My father use to play it on his tenor sax.
