A true tanto will always have a slight sweep to the main edge, it is part of what makes them such a great blade style. They don't work the same if you take the sweep out of the blade.

Good to know. I never cared for the style myself, but I see the appeal.

This is actually a great "warehouse knife". I know it's marketing as "tactical self defense" but this really is a great "working man's knife". I used this knife for about 3 years before transferring jobs. The blunted off tanto tip is excellent for box / package work.

I always liked the reverse tanto. Of course I was mainly cutting pallet straps, and things of that nature. Box teardowns consisted of just cutting through tape.

Lol. All diamond plates sound terrible. I wanted something flat, and fast. This fit the ticket. Even worn down, this thing is a beast. It'll eat steel quicker than you realize.

Fantastic. You can always just joint the edge, and grind it straight and flat. Also, you can grind from the spine side, to help recreate the tip. There are many ways to skin a cat. Glad this video may help you into more ideas 💡🤘🤘

Nice work as always. I get a lot of tac force tantos in to sharpen from people (that's just the nature of where I set up for business, I get a lot of low end knives to sharpen for people) . They tend to have a similar thing, where they aren't perfectly straight on the bottom bevel. Its wierd. Honestly it has done wonders for my sharpening though. It's pretty damn hard to get a nice apex on poorly heat treated, or mild/low carbon steel (or both). So when I get something in to sharpen that is anywhere close to decent it makes me look good.
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
No doubt! I've had my hand in sharpening some low end gas station blades, and they can be way more difficult, than super steels. That gummy nature can really throw a monkey wrench in your confidence. Often I would think I did a poor job, when in fact, it was poor steel. Took me awhile to figure out. Ganzo knives really helped. They have their faults, but at least the 440c they used, would take an edge. It really was the boost I needed. Otherwise, I can't say I would have continued trying

I could do a little better in terms of sharpness, but I was doing all I could, to keep from riding into that wad of metal, in the back. I should have just cut it out, and enhanced the choil. The tip looked really bad in person, but seeing it on video, it was kinda tame. I have several more from Brian to sharpen, and a few of em have more tip issues. This was the worst of the bunch, but they will all make for interesting videos. Especially the Gavko knife. He started out knife sharpening on youtube, then went into knife making. Now his knives, display one of the biggest problems, we lament. That choil/notch area, riding into the plunge line, creating flair. Of all the people, making knives, I would have never guessed, his would have such problems. I know he used to do hand made customs, but this one has MassDrop stamped on it. Not sure if he teamed up with some company to produce em, but either way, I see it as poor design. Makers need to start catching this problem. I am not gonna relent on pointing it out.

This is really impressive. I'll bet as someone who's house is filled with very sharp knives, you get super excited when you get a knife that needs work like this. Also just gonna say I appreciate the practice it takes to be able to hand bevel an edge on a coarse diamond stone like that. Maintaining a constant angle like that without taking too much off is NOT easy. Awesome vid sir! :)

You nailed it. When someone tells me they have a dinged up tip, or some chipped edges, I get stoked. Always makes time on the stones more interesting. Thank you for the kind words as well. I hate to take too much credit, for skill, over the fact this diamond plate, is pretty worn, and just slow :)

Hello Jeff, I have been trying to sharpen my clip point recon 1 (s35vn) with a hand held/small sharpal. However, I keep getting nasty scratches on the finish. Is this normal? I am holding it at a 20-30 degree angle but can’t seem to get it shaving sharp and keeps getting scratched. Any advice would help.
@Jef
@Jef 3 ай бұрын
Scratching the main grind? If so then you are likely holding the angle to acutely, or the main grind has some issues. Take a photo of your angle, or even a short video; email it to me. Jefjewell @ gmail . Com Sharpal, btw, are some shady ass people. They had me do an “honest” review, and threatened to sue me, if i didn’t pull it down. I showed how the stones go bald, and how poorly they are made. Just a lil fyi for ya.

👍, I've noticed some of my knives I thought where straight whrnclife sheepsfoof blades having just the slightest belly. Seems odd. It's so minimal why? Any idea? If you have a sec or is it just design. Understand if you don't reply, not important at all. Just wondering what advantage there might be to such a small and kinda inconvenient method. I know it's not much of a change in sharpening but it has to be observed. Ty for your vids Mr Jewell
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
Wish I could answer it. I honestly do not know. It is possible they just do it for the aesthetics. Maybe it is just better for sharpening. As far as advantage goes, I am not really sure there is one. There isn't enough belly to promote slicing, and it isn't straight enough to be a wharncliff. Your guess is as good as mine :)
@rockets4kids
@rockets4kids 2 жыл бұрын
This is practicality for both the maker and the user. If you have an edge that is perfectly staight you'll need a dead flat stone in order to sharpen it properly. That slight bit of belly will allow you to sharpen on a stone that is slightly dished. Most people out there don't flatten their stones every time they sharpen and I've even seen DMT plates enough out-of-flat to cause problems. For the maker who sharpens on a wheel or belt grinder (which is basically all of them) it is very easy to wind up with a visibly wavy edge when going for something completely straight. This means that there will be a slight recurve in places the user must grind out. That slight bit of belly also hides these visually as well as functionally. That slight radius is basically a win for all involved.

One handed? Maybe if you flick it out pretty hard with centrifugal force. Opening one handed without the thumb stud i don’t think would be possible. Cold steel aren’t the easiest deploying knives after all

Enjoy your videos. What do you think of the DMT continuous Dia Sharps vs. the Atomas?
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
DMT are poor quality, imo. The last few plates I purchased from them had defects in the metal backing. Actual voids that caused the tip to sink in, and get damaged. They have AMAZING customer service. Sent me new plates, no questions asked. However, the new plates all had grit contamination. I suspect they make them too closely to each other, and the diamond particles are able to float around and adhere to the wrong grits. It was a mess. I ended up trading my entire DMT line for a Microtech Ultratech. Atoma on the other hand, are amazing, in terms of quality. I have yet to have an issue with their products. Trouble comes into paradise when you want fine grits. If they would come out with something finer, I would be happy. My biggest problem with all diamond plates, is the amount of material they remove. Even this worn out plate, can eat through steel, like it's nobodies business. So you have to pay extra attention to how much you are grinding.
