Me too, same age, same favourite artist. Return of the drifter was one of the first UK hip hop albums I bought after a few years of being into the late 90s American scene. I hadn't heard of jehst before I bought it and it was like a whole new world had opened up and UK hip hop, despite being different to its American counterpart, was a real thing. Big props to harry love and other beat makers of the time and the dozen or so MC's that made the era what it was (for me at least). The rhymes and and beats were so heavy, but so relatable. What a time it was

What awesome trip down memory lane. The subject matter of what’s discussed touches on just how much work Jehst has done for uk hiphop and the way in which he’s done it. The first track on the new album is called cornerstone and I couldn’t think of a better way to describe what he has laid down for us. Strangely enough I watched a documentary about Robin Williams yesterday and it had some of the cuts for the new album in it, which made me tear up as did the mention of champions of nature and evil Ed so many good memories of amazing people that have given so much love to their art.

Great to see Jehst in conversation. The emcee in Hidden Identity was Mistima. He and Evil Ed had an EP out around '94 that was rough around the edges but banged (it was hilarious, and sampled Tim Roth way before Skinny's album). It's also such a shame that CON were that close to signing a deal - it's wild to think how influential they were at the time, and yet now are a mostly forgotten footnote in UK Hip-Hop's history/evolution.

The term 'back pack' is interesting & i believe it has different meanings depending where u live, because in early 90's in uk when my cru used to dig all day for breaks & instead of takin our records back home to go to a jam we would take our pack full of records being young & staying out all day vibin with hip hop frds! Its just how i interpret it from my experience.
@youser1093

Not really backpackers tend to listen to underground hip hop the term came about as the people who listened to this type of music especially in the 90,s until about 05 b4 the internet really took off people who listened to this type of music would typically u wear back back packs to carry record walkmans spraycans it's a universal phrase

In student nights and hip-hop nights in Manchester through the 90s, it was common to see kids on the Dancefloor dancing with their backpacks on. Always Eastpack or Jansport.

My own interpretation of the term "backpack rapper" has always been the more concious, lyrical form of rapping. The back packing nerds that study the art and go deeper with the content as opposed to the more gangster side of things. 😁

London was/is too insular ... The smallest capital ever... In 1990 I didnt know where the North was... Through raving I realised the midlands wasnt the North. Nothing wrong with that scene. But as a hip hopper back then in the 80s until acidhouse. As a southerner it was impossible to get into the ego scene. Maybe superficial? I grew up in Buckinghamshire. Im 50 now. But still. If it wasn't for Mike Allen. I wouldnt be still passionate about underground music❤❤❤
