Funny thing about this is that Mr. Hyde was something like Dr. Jackyls... "costume" to do all the things he desired and don't feel bad about them or regret them. It was not him it was that awful Mr. Hyde. In book it was explained like Dr. Jackyl was man of good and evil, Hyde just evil. Whole Jackyl's story could be an alegory to drug adiction: discovery -> enjoying -> trouble -> pause -> return to drug _> loosing control
