I like thinking about the in-universe reasoning behind the stuff that happens in roleplays like this. Here's what goes on in my head for this one: -The tracers JB is looking for are about 1 square mm in size, only microns thick, virtually invisible, and draw power just from being in contact with the skin, but a lot was sacrificed to make them this way: they can only transmit information when they're near a receiver, and the range of detection is so short (a few meters) that receiver coverage is actually very spotty, even in big cities. This is why the exam can take place so close to the safe house compound; the people there were able to confirm there are no receivers nearby, and the path JB takes (between known receivers) makes the last pinged location for any potential tracers an innocuous place. -The tracers don't tend to last very long because they're easily damaged or removed by accident, so if someone is being tracked for more than a few days, they will have a tracer surreptitiously applied at every opportunity, sometimes leading to several being active at the same time. They are virtually always applied to the face because the face is the easiest thing for computers to visually track, can be used to confirm someone's identity before applying a tracer, is rarely 100% covered, and is unlikely to get the same kind of everyday dirt and damage as, for example, the hands. -The visual inspection is looking for new, fresh tracers that have not been visually damaged or obscured by anything such as makeup, dirt, or natural skin oils. Under blacklight, they would show up as tiny geometric sparkles on the skin. Finding something at this stage would be extremely worrying because it means it may have been applied when the person being examined was physically with JB and being taken to the car, which could mean the security of this entire operation has been compromised; however, that sparkle is so easily occluded that this is mostly a theoretical situation. -The modified temperature gun forces a local ping from tracers within a very, very short range (a few centimeters). There is a tiny screen on the other side that displays whether or not it received any response(s), and if it did, the device can be plugged in to a computer to view information about the tracer(s) that responded, like make, model, time of application, serial number, etc. -The swab portion of the exam is testing for various types of adhesive used to stick them to the face; a positive result is marked by a dramatic color change in the testing fluid, and indicates that either a tracer is present, but has been damaged and deactivated by incidental damage (and so was not visible and did not respond to previous tests), or that it was recently applied but fell off. The "whole protocol" involves a more rigorous skin exam (to locate a damaged tracer) and a thorough inspection of your clothing and the car (if it fell off in the car). -Tracers used inside the ear canal are a bit different. They can't be tested for by swabbing for adhesive because they're applied much more deliberately than, for example, a puff of air at a distance, which would leave a big spray of adhesive on the skin. However, ear tracers are more robust in construction because they don't need to be visually undetectable to the same degree as skin-surface tracers (people look at faces all the time, but not inside ear canals), so the ping test and visual inspection are all that's needed to locate or rule them out. -The viewpoint character is one of an unknown number of humanoid cyborgs independently created by a subversive figure relevant to this resistance group's goals. The creator has been missing for a long time, presumably captured or dead, but their cyborgs are special because, as "third-party" beings, they have a unique set of hardware and software that contains no mandated security backdoors, makes them incompatible with existing hacking and remote access tools, and resistant to or entirely unaffected by typical anti-cyborg weaponry, while still able to interact with everyday devices and spoof being normal to hide its true nature, when necessary. The viewpoint character has been living among unmodified humans and typical cyborgs for many years, undetected but aware that they're special, before a fateful encounter with JB's group that eventually led to the events of this video. If you read all that, I hope you enjoyed it! I want to write out my thoughts on some other videos, too. Sometimes relaxation means having fun, not being calm.
