I just saw the film today, all I can say is that it appealed to me on so many levels, the impeccable British humour, the deep dialogue which outside of the humour got you to think,the portrayal of Pakistani’s outside of ‘ terrorist’ tags, the believable British Pakistani family( I grew up with many including great school friends ); and they introduced me to Bollywood and later Pakistani dramas! Emma Thompson is much like how my mum was with my Pakistani neighbours, she became closer to them than her own family! The deep seated family values, and depicting a fractured family for cross cultural marriages and it’s impact on everyone’s mental health, the portrayal of the feisty young bride who wasn’t this submissive obedient girl but a young,outward looking with ambitions of being a human rights lawyer! I could go and watch it again, it was so on point on many levels!Jemima is truly revered in Pakistan, and she has done a splendid job on this film! The cast were fabulous!👍🏽👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌹

What Jamima is talking about here is called "Neeyat" which means "intention" . This Islamic concept says that "action depends on intentions" which means that if someone did something wrong without meaning to, you try to be forgiving towards them because they didn't intend to! I loved her answer about 'who gets to tell which stories'. I think there are examples of popular western films that should never have been made by filmmakers who lack an understanding of another culture, and are disrespectful ie like Lost in Translation. This film is the absolute opposite of that. Its very sweet and also shows the real differences, as well as showing the fundamental similarities.

Great line "you dont start with love you end with it" Arranged marriages may seem successful only because in cultures where arranged marriages are the norm attach a stigma to divorce, second women in these cultures remain subservient to the male for life who is the sole bread winner. The woman in this case remains dependent on the male for life for reasons mainly related to levels of literacy and professional development. Even, where there is "education and professional development" women due to societal, cultural and family preferences never take up careers a case In point Pakistan where several young ladies study medicine, become doctors never to practice due family preference. Love is a misunderstood concept. Love develops over time where two people, or two entities like a human and an animal who go through the "thick & thin" of life together. Love is a euphemism for Infatuation, attraction and appeal perhaps. Love is the end state that comes with age like fine wine!

Am amazed how she adapted in Pakistan. Am a British born Muslim my parents from Mirpur Pakistan I visited it in my late 40's I could not live out there for long as it depresses me to see so much poverty and people living in mansions around poor infrastructure.
