If most of the content is for KZbin, all of these ultra specs will go unnoticed. If the intended viewing medium is a theater movie screen, then yes, high end specs will make more of a difference. At the end of the day, its the creativity of the creator that makes the biggest impact. Just my opinion, but at the same time there is nothing wrong with using high end gear either. Creating something from nothing should be a joy.

I'm still using the c100mki and mkii after a decade and I really couldn't be happier. Great image, small file sizes. It's been a workhorse over the years. Almost went for the C70 but the weak hinge on the screen that tends to break and the lack of full XLR inputs really held me back. I wish Canon would have just put everything the C70 has into a C100 body and call it the mkiii. The formfactor of the C70 is absolutely amazing and I love it.. it just doesn't allow for proper and robust audio inputs.

As someone who recently, and happily, picked up the FX30, I was looking at what camera I may upgrade or add to my gear in the future. Owning a Sony camera, I have been thinking that the FX6 would be a natural progression in choosing a higher end camera. But, I'm leaning back to the C70. Why? Well, as a low budget/indie filmmaker, I need to shoot with a camera that I can use anywhere without drawing attention to myself. So, cameras that "look" like a DSLR would be a good choice. In that vain, the C70 has that look. Whereas, the FX6 looks like a cinema camera. Solution? In DaVinci Resolve, you have the Color Space Transform tool that allows you to match shots from multiple cameras, regardless of manufacturer. So, I can see shooting with the FX30 on gimbals or quick run and gun situations, and the C70 for the locked off shots, etc. This video actually helped in making this decision. Subscribing.

By the way Thomas, after your video I started to searching for the fixed (non variable) ND filters, and I found a very interesting option! Marumi has a magnetic set of NDs made specific for the video! Marumi Movie Kit. The key feature of this set is that it has 1 stop, 2 stops, 3 and 4. And it designed to be used in combination, like 4+3 stops to achieve 7 stops. And as I understand it doesn’t loose details and colour. I think it should be much better quality than Freewell. So with this set you can put any stops ND without needing to close the aperture. And because of magnetic it will be pretty fast

Really enjoyed this review, dude. I got to the video world with Canon Mark 3 I had bought 7 or 8 years ago and then I switched to Sony system for few years. But Sony A7III was a huge disappointment for me and in spite of getting new A7SIII I've got myself a Red Dragon 6K and I really enjoyed it. The media straight from the camera was perfect and I could see the smallest details at the actors coat. But this the biggest problem was that this camera was heavy as hell and you always need a few v-mount batteries, huge gimbal like Ronin 2 that turned every project to really expensive one. I was lucky to sell it fem months after purchasing it. I loved the quality, but the clients didn't want to deal with r3d and sometimes they just wanted a quick proress material. That was a big challenge for me to switch from Sony FX6, FX3, Red Komodo and C70, and I got the last one and I love it. These perfect canon colors remind me the time I was using my old eos camera for my first projects. This camera is perfect for my sigma 18-35 and 50-100 (that I use probably 85 percent of my filming) that I usually used with red dragon and BMPCC6K. I've got a speedbuster and now I can use full frame EF lenses. But the same time I had a lot of projects to film with Sony users or for a production that have only Sony cameras. This fall I had few projects for 40-50 days and I realized I could rent it every day so I've got myself a FX3 and I enjoy it too. These are great cameras and I used them separately or together. That's amazing they have some cool features. Its like having a two cars with different characters. These two cameras are great and I like that you enjoy them too %)

appreciate it! yeah those old Sony's were brutal haha, the color was just so odd and the log curves didn't work well with 8 bit- I think it added a bad taste to a lot of people's perspective on sony when the new generation came out (a7iv, a7siii, fx3, etc) Yeah that red setup is gorgeous but you're right the workflow definitely gets deeper with it Love it! I feel the c70 is a great choice for you, haha love it you got a fx3 too! Both are incredible, and it's so nice to have them depending on the needs. You make some valid points here Thomas, and although I don't totally agree with you, I can definitely see where you come from. I've had the c70 for a while (since it was released) and yes, the image quality is amazing, and you're right in that how good a camera is all depends on your own workflow. I ultimately decided to sell my C70, mainly because of its size/weight, but especially because of the terrible performance in low light, which is a huge requirement for the type of projects I do. So yes, it all comes down to workflow. I also shoot both Canon and Sony, but I lean towards the Sony for most of my projects because of the type of filmmaking I do. Great video!!

A compact, all in one camera with built in xlr audio and built in ND filters. A single fixed Lens we didn’t (and couldn’t) fuse with, all with great stabilization. However, the interchange prime lenses with the fantastic low light and cinematic look is such a game changer. Eye pleasing look, but with the price tag of a car and a silly rig. Some day they will make the absolute perfect camera, they are getting close…but for now the struggle continues 😂 and I’d rather just get a simple great shot from my iPhone ☺️

I have an FX9 and recently sold my Komodo and bought a C70, with the raw update on the C70 it’s a more versatile camera overall than the Komodo. I’ve used the FX9 and the C70 as two camera set up for interviews and in Resolve you can get them to match. Komodo has a great image but falls short in a lot areas, FX9 and FX6 only have 7 stops of ND vs C70 having 10 stops, in bright daylight I find I still need more ND to shoot wide open or even a stop down from wide open on the FX9.

One thing I've realized while transitioning more to gaffing: no matter how good your camera is, if you don't light it right the image still looks like sh*t. So the main factors are: is the camera industry standard? And, is it built in a way that you can work well with it? After those two considerations, all the other specs are extra, and then it's time to focus on other things like lighting (and lenses). "I like it" really is a good enough reason to choose a camera.
@thomas.kovacik8 ай бұрын
100% everything in front of the sensor is sooo important. I've shot good / bad things with every camera and it all came down to lighting, composition, framing, movement and so much more I agree, as long as you're cool with the workflow with that camera then go for it haha

Great video! I started with a Blackmagic pocket 4k and ended up with two Canon C70s. I completely agree that internal NDs are a game changer. Something I don't see many talking about is the advantage of being able to purchase EF class and use the 0.71 adapter. Buying used EF glass (I have an EF 24-105) is some of the best cost to quality I've found. I also own the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and Sigma 50-100 1.8 which are both aps-c lenses, yet are also some of the best value to cost as well. Having a large range of used EF glass for the C70 that provide both incredible image quality and reliable autofocus at generally half the price of the full frame/competitors lenses, I've found often makes the overall cost the same or even less than those investing in another system.
@thomas.kovacik Жыл бұрын
appreciate it! the c70 is just so well rounded 100% agree with the EF / 0.71x workflow I dont use modern EF lenses with the c70, but I have a full kit of vintage lenses that are EF converted. pairing that with the 0.71x adapter has been a great move!

Interesting. I went the opposite direction. These two are a good set. I’m not getting rid of the C70, but using FX3 as B-cam and A-cam for a lighter set up in simple shoots to cut down weight. I always prefer the colors of the C70, but it’s heavy for gimbal use. Both are good.

Nice one. I hope you'll be really happy with the C70. I've had it since launch, and still love using the camera. With the latest firmware it's such a complete package. I'm so used to built in ND's and having proper audio channels so it's such a nice middle ground between a 'full sized' cinema camera and a mirrorless. I can't see myself finding anything better anytime soon. Agree about being brand agnostic though, I will still have times when I get hired and need to use a different camera system and that's fine, but I know what my preference is! Enjoy

I've had pocket 6k, 1dx ii, komodo & c70. I do outdoor/offroad filming and the komodo had awesome image quality, but it was a pain for run & gun. It gets heavy when built out with just a screen and one small battery, cables all over like rigging a pocket cam and it takes forever to turn on and off, then gotta black balance more. The c70 was the nicest for run n gun that I've used. Komodo still has a nicer image, deep colors and more depth to the image. C70 + R5C is the best combo for run n gun and still need some photos or second camera angle sometime.

Great video I love how you really narrowed down to the T of what you need. I need to do this same thing when it comes to my cooking videos. I have a question how come you didn’t constitute R5C? Was it battery life, and ND filters?
@thomas.kovacik2 жыл бұрын
thank you! The r5c wasn't a thing when I first bought my FX3, it came out a handful of months later The main thing about the R5C for me is ND filters and battery life yeah To me, it's not much more of an upgrade from my FX3 - though it has 8k raw and a 45mp sensor and it's a true hybrid camera with the cinema operating system and such The fx3 just fits my needs better for that type of camera, I dont need photos so I'm not missing that The c70, for another $700 was a much better offering for me I've seen people switch to the r5c, so it looks like a viable camera for some!

@@thomas.kovacik Thanks for responding man I appreciate it. I did notice there’s a typo in my message I meant to say consider lol. But I have trouble picking cameras for my cooking channel because there’s really no channels out that teaches about gear for cooking videos it’s always landscaping, weddings, portraits, sports etc. So for gear to use in the kitchen is hard to find. I’m guessing the lens and lighting may be more important than camera bodies.
@thomas.kovacik2 жыл бұрын
all good! yeah cooking shows are pretty niche- I know of one channel that uses all c70s and RF glass, that seems to work really well for their workflow! Lighting is definitely super important, if you can I recommend the 600d and 300d from aputure. 2x 600s would give you plenty to light for ambient / set and use the 300d for close ups and such I feel with the cooking show you may want speed / good battery life / audio built in The c70 / fx6 are definitely key contenders I think

Your thought process is well thought out. You made the correct decision for you. You got away from all of the bs and concentrated on your needs, not anything else. You have the cameras that will keep you nimble and productive. I like Tilta cages over Smallrig due to the quality, but Smallrig is a good place to start due to their loads of options and relatively low cost, but with anything when you move up you usually move on. The over two year wait for the fx6 is crazy and I missed out on one twice by 5-10 mins, while making coffee and getting breakfast with the website set, oh well, not meant to be so I will stick with my blackmagic and A7SIII for now. Great video. I think this camera is perfect mash up of a mirrorless and cinema cam. I was perfectly happy with my combo of baby fx3 (zv-e1) and BM6KFF but I made a silly offer on eBay and got the c70 just for the fun of it. I have had few canons including c200, r8 and r6II and I mostly disliked them. C70 is winning me over very quickly. The DR is insane. It’s so intuitive to use. I still prefer the image out of 6KFF when shooting in decent light but not by a great margin. C70 has that filmic soft vibe like my older Blackmagic Cameras. Af and the better choice of frame rate are also a factor. It will be a hard choice in the end.

Hey brother, quick question. I’m a KZbinr that shoots talking head videos in my indoor studio. But I love to make my videos as if they were professional documentaries, so I’ve aimed to the best cameras I can afford. Right now I’ve been shooting with my FX3. Now, I want to upgrade but don’t know if to get the FX6 or the C70. With the Canon I fell like I’m going to get a more pleasant image quality and skin color, but at the same time I’m worried about the sharpness (since I like very sharp videos) and also the potential noise in the shadows since I shoot in a very dark and moody background to make my image more contrasty. So therefore, which of the 2 cameras do you think is the best option for me? I don’t care about ND filters or weight since the camera is going to be always standing o a tripod. I care about image quality, sharpness and clean shadows. Thanks for your help

Its a little odd to explain over text but in the video it'll be clear I have a manfrotto tripod that I plan to replace with a flow tech 75 + aktiv 8- but having the baseplate with the quick release makes it so easy to get on and off the tripod The nato top handle from BT is so sturdy and clutch too. What an excellent video, great content and well thought out! I’m shooting with an fx3 right now and its a great camera, however I really don’t like the audio handle and the limitations in rigging. I don’t like a “cinema camera” in a mirrorless body. The screen is unusable and I need an external monitor for focus. And one of the major downsides for me, the e-mount system is so limiting and makes you locked in to e-mount glass. I prefer my vintage lenses, but there are times when I need something else. I invested in a couple sony primes (24/50) and a sigma 24-70. I can’t adapt them to any other camera body and that sucks. For that reason I’m thinking of selling the expensive primes because I’m looking to get something other than a Sony for my next camera. All that said I will probably keep my fx3 like you for certain jobs. What is your glass strategy, other than having vintage primes? What e, rf ir pl glass would you get to use for both cameras?

appreciate it! the fx3 is fantastic, yeah I can see taht! There's definitely limitations, buuuuut when stripped down it's a powerhouse The c70 feels much better, as it feels like a step up- a c300 / c500 definitely feels nicer bc of the ergonomics / ports but those are also twice the price of the c70 haha Yeah lensing is a difficult one, I never really enjoyed the sony lenses and just rocked the sigma 24-70 E by itself on the fx3 and that was a workhorse lens Right now- I sold my sigma 24-70 for the sony 20-70 f4 primarily for KZbin / event work I've only used the fx3 for work once and that was general event coverage, so I was okay making that decision For my c70, I just have my vintage lenses converted to EF, I'm in the processs of trying to find the right cine zooms for my setup. I'm not interested in cine primes as I have a kit of primes already I've been toying around with the idea of getting the RF24-70 as that lens is insanely good, and it'll be nice to have AF for KZbin stuff I think adding the RF24-70 + a 2-3 lens kit of cine zooms would be ideal. I'm not too interested in sharing lenses with the fx3 primarily bc the cine zooms will only be used on larger sets and I wouldn't take my fx3 on those Plus, with both having different sensor sizes, I would have to invest in full frame cine zooms to share, which is fine but those get heavier and more expensive Right now- I'm looking at the DZO Pictor 3 lens kit and tokina 25-75, 11-20 and 50-135

Having used them both, I haven't seen the dynamic range advantage in C70 I hoped for. I tried pushing them a lot, various lighting conditions, all types of codecs and realized they both have pretty much the same dynamic range, just distributed differently. So, when properly exposed on each, they both yield the same. With that knowledge and knowing FX3 has much better rolling shutter performance and having wider field of view, I've sold the C70. Contemplating a used C500 ii or Alexa XT. But just happy with FX3 by itself. If oscar winner Greg Fraser (of Dune, Batman etc) can shoot an entire Hollywood sci fi movie on FX3, we are kidding ourselves if we really think we need more to be better.

That's interesting. Well Gareth Edwards did shoot his first feature with the old EX3 with a 35mm Letus adaptor and some cheap Nikon primes, so maybe shooting on a modest Sony camera again appealed to his indie roots.

This is exactly why I chose the C70 over Komodo. Workflow + Internal ND + Audio Once you taste how practical is to have ND filters at the tip of your fingers, you just can’t go back. At least, for run and gun and documentary scenarios. I love the C70, makes me wonder what could Canon put inside on a C70MarkII

yea that's why hollywood doesn't use them or auto focus

I did in a recent video, they have a setting in the menu to make it feel linear- definitely helps!

This a great video, canny long, but really good and I will certainly be sending it to my customers who are trying to decide on the C70! I think it is funny about how obsessed you are with internal Nds (me too) though cinema cameras don't have this as it can change back focus and they can colour shift, so it is therefore more consistent to use external solid nds like tiffen or Schneider. The fx6 definitely has the same sensor as the fx3 btw and the whole audio issue is what stops it being an almost perfect camera. It still great but even if it had one XLR on the body would have been great and considering the fs5 did it's very annoying this doesn't, even if it had the mi shoe adaptor would have been something. The main thing I hate about the fx3 and I only figured this out recently is that you cannot run shutter angle so have to change the shutter speed with frame rates which is amazing all cinema cameras should have shutter angle.

yup! there was a lot to cover hah For a solo op like myself, internal NDs just make life sooo easy. If I were on more video only sets with ACs I wouldn't care hah, but for the majority of my jobs I'm running solo and when using primes it gets a bit hectic carrying and swapping filters Yeah the audio on the fx6 is a big bummer, especially since those top handles dont feel sturdy. I haven't used my c70 top handle in a long time bc I now use a bright tangerine one which I prefer- I couldn't do this with the fx6 bc I lose my audio Yeah shutter angle would be such a great addition! Once you taste the goodness of shutter angle it's hard to go back haha Thanks for watching!

In terms of image quality, do you find yourself preferring the fx6 or the c70? Great video!
@thomas.kovacik2 жыл бұрын
definitely the c70! there’s just something going on with that sensor that’s not to say the fx6 is far off either the fx6 just feels very close to my fx3, like there’s no major upgrade with it - though you get a nicer codec i love my fx3 footage especially with vintage glass, i feel the sony glass is one part of the cause for odd colors some people get. the canon RF glass on the c70 is perfect too
@Videosbyme2782 жыл бұрын
@@thomas.kovacik Interesting, I find the fx6 noticeably better than the fx3 (albeit similar) due to the lack of internal sharpening, I feel the fx6 has more of an organic feel to it. With that being said you can match them incredibly well. Loved your previous c70 content though and looking forward to more especially since it has the raw update now!
@thomas.kovacik2 жыл бұрын
100% the codec is a lot nicer on the fx6! I can see a difference there, it's just very close - like for me spending 6k for a similar image wasn't ideal considering the c70's bonus with the sensor. Even though I get evnd, sdi, shutter angle etc. Having a significantly better image was nice to get Thank you! yeah that new raw update is pretty insane, doing testing to see how it compares to xfavc / hevc which I used back then Cheers!

I use the pocket 6K pro with a Triton battery attached to the bottom and it allows me to use the monitor on the back of the camera. It make it much more compact. I still use an SSD though but the whole kit is pretty lean.

Yep! That battery is pretty ideal to make things smaller
