The ship appears to fire on a Klingon vessel, and Gorkon is killed in the subsequent confusion. Christopher Plummer a legendary Canadian actor who received Canada's highest civilian award for merit for his long time services to acting and entertainment. This one came out in 1991. Right after the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union broke up. Very timely. Great way to send off the crew. I started watching Star Trek TNG from the beginning and loved every minute of it. I love the ending where it changes from "To boldly go where no man has gone before" to "To boldly go where no one has gone before" You hit it exactly to watch this after following the crew for so many years was incredible. Glad I could relive that through your eyes.

Not only that, but the inspiration for the Praxis explosion came largely from the Chernobyl incident. Gorbachev would say later that he believed Chernobyl substantially hastened the fall of the Soviet Union, so the parallels between that and the Praxis incident leading to the fall of the Klingon Empire are strong. Definitely different vibes watching this if you grew up before the end of the Cold War, and it’s one of many reasons this one is my favorite Star Trek movie.

The Soviets we're not fully broken until December 25, 1991. On that day The Russian Soviet Socialist Republic (communist name of Russia proper) of the Soviet Union became The Russian Federation. So yeah the Soviet Union was dying but not fully dead. In fact it's still alive if you recognize the micro state of Transnistria.

Funny how both warrior cultures were working together, the hardliners from the federation too, just to keep their cultures alive. Trust to not trust, on the same mission in that. If only they'd seen sooner how well they worked together Klingons wouldn't fear being slaves and could see even in the federation like-minded people exist. Hardliners too would have a new wardog and a new excuse to be loose on the leash.

According to the Memory Alpha article on Christopher Plummer, "In the 1950s, Plummer's understudy for a production of Henry V at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival was William Shatner. During the festival, Plummer fell ill and Shatner was forced to take the stage, giving Shatner his first big break."

The banquet scene, ironically, has two of the greatest Hamlets to ever play the role...David Warner (as Gorkon) and Christopher Plummer (as Chang) both played Hamlet. Warner played the role with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1965, and his performance is ranked as one of the best. Plummer had already played the role in Stratford, Ontario (Canadian boy), when he did it at Stratford-Upon-Avon for the RSC in 1961, which was recorded on film for the BBC. That Plummer quotes Shakespeare so much in this movie is one of my favorite things about his performance as Chang. The film was directed by Nicholas Meyer, who directed Wrath of Khan. However, Meyer also wrote and directed a wonderful time travel film that co-starred David Warner in 1979 called Time After Time. Warner played the villain in it...and was amazing! The Night Duty Officer who wakes Sulu on the Excelsior is an uncredited Christian Slater, who besides being a big star at the time was also a huge Star Trek fan. He got the job partly because his mother, Mary Jo Slater was the casting director for the film. The uniform Slater wears is Shatner's in Wrath of Khan...and Slater stole it for his personal use (which he revealed years later on Graham Norton). Kirk and McCoy's defense attorney is Colonel Worf, grandfather of Lt. Worf of the Eenterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and played by Michael Dorn, the first ST: TNG cast member to come to the big screen in a Star Trek film. The Federation President was played by Kurtwood Smith...Clarence Bodiker in RoboCop, and Red Foreman on That 70's Show. The Sniper at Khitomer was Rene Auberjonois, and at the time of this film was two years from taking on his long-running role on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Constable Odo.

I grew up loving Star Trek in the 70s as a little kid. I love seeing young people fall in love with the OG crew. To me, they are the real Star Trek. Only TNG comes close. This is one of my favourite Star Trek movies; unlike V, the big bad wasn’t an evil deity but the very real threat of politics and diplomacy failing and peace dying with them. Christopher Plummer was excellent as Chang and brought a real touch of theatrical class to a villain whose race were typically presented as aggressive and lacking any kind of refinement. Back in the 50s, him and Shatner actually performed in similar theatre circles and Shatner was even his understudy on one occasion iirc. So bringing that Shakespearean element to Star Trek was a really sentimental wink to both of them.

I love this movie so much! I'm 52, and this crew has been a part of my entire life. I get misty eyes everytime I see this. Now, that being said, I grew to think that STTNG was one of the best TV shows ever created. And I grew to love that crew a great deal as well. It started when I was in highschool. My son just recently watched the series and it is also his favorite TV show to date. The TNG movies will not disappoint.

The thing I love most, among many things about this movie, is the character evolution of spock. He starts out to do the kohlinar in 1, then realizes he cant abandon his empathy, gives his life for his shipmates in 2, comes back to life in 3, begins to value his human half at the end of 4, and then here, he says, "logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end" Quite the character arc, from who he was on the original show ......

0:14 Sadly yes, Jen. 1991 was a big year for Star Trek. - It was the 25th Anniversary of The Original Series. - Star Trek: The Next Generation was already on the air for four seasons; going into its fifth. Series co-star Michael Dorn appears in this film as Colonel Worf; the grandfather of his character of Lieutenant Worf, on the show. - Leonard Nimoy (Spock) had agreed to guest star on Star Trek: TNG in a two-part episode called “Unification”, which aired on TV just three short weeks before Star Trek VI opened. - And Gene Roddenberry, the man who created Star Trek, had sadly died in October of 1991. Both this film and the two-part TNG episode “Unification” are dedicated to his memory.

This movie was composer Cliff Eidelman's breakthrough moment. Before this, he had been composing for movies and television for about 3 years, and his work had been noticed. It is a wonderful score.

One of the great things about this movie is that it isn't *just* a science fiction movie. It has elements of a murder mystery, a political thriller, a spy caper and a prison break, all in one. All of the original crew got his or her chance to shine here. I'm so thankful to Nicholas Meyer for letting each of them have a final hurrah. I don't expect Jen to know this, but the events of this film closely mirror the last few years of the Soviet Union. The Klingons serve as proxies for the Soviets and the destruction of Praxis mirrors the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. _Star Trek_ didn't shy away from addressing controversial topics of the day. Some of the best episodes of the original show took on such issues as racism, sexism and more -- things we're still struggling with today. They were able to do those episodes because they couched them under the guise of sci fi. Not to keep dumping on _The Final Frontier,_ but I'm so glad they didn't end the original film series on that one. This is definitely the way to bow out. Without giving away spoilers, another very popular film series which came after these ended its run the same way, with the stars' signatures before the final credits. I'm here for Jen's immersion into the _Next Generation_ movies and TV shows. She could pick and choose a few episodes from each of the seven seasons, then move onto the films.

The continuity is great. John Schuck returns as the Klingon Ambassador, the return of the Federation President, Admiral Cartwright, etc. In the theater, my girlfriend was puzzled when I gleefully reacted to Rura Penthe. I explained at our post-movie dinner that this was a delightful homage. Rura Penthe is the prison colony Captain Nemo and his crew escaped from in Jules Verne's _'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea.'_

The funny thing is... his species is an off shoot of the Klingons, kinda like the Romulans and Vulcan split in a historical sense. Although its more that the species was subjugated by the Klingons in their early history and like the Romulans and the Remans, some of the genes drifted between them which is behind their similarity.

My older cousin was visiting, and he was a huge star trek fan, so we went to see this in the theater. I was too young to catch the references to the Cold War, but that did not matter one bit. I had only seen one other Star Trek movie, and by no means was a fan, but I absolutely loved it, and yeah, the whole theater was going nuts when the Bird of Prey was exposed. A few years later I decided to watch the movies in order and was blown away at how good they were.

One of the original ideas for this movie was that Saavik would be the traitor, lending greater impact to her character's betrayal. Gene Roddenberry objected to this and it was changed to a new character, Valeris.

Before this came out, there was a rumor that Kirk was going to die. In the trailers, they showed the clip of the shapeshifter looking like Kirk getting vaporized, so I (and others) went into this movie thinking Kirk was going to die. Also, christian slater's mom was in charge of casting for this film, so she got him a cameo. Make sure to watch The Next Generation before watching the next movie, as they mix the crews in it, so it's good to know the Next Generation crew.

The concept for the story was inspired by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the effects it had on the Soviet Union, with Praxis being a proxy for Chernobyl and Gorkon for Mikhail Gorbachev. Christian Slater's mother was the casting director for this movie - so he was a nepo hire, lol.

So good. Yes, these characters were like an extension of family to me having grown up watching and loving them in TOS and then through all their movies. Saw this one twice on opening day. Such a great send off.

I saw this in theatres when it came out. That year Paramount still owned the local big amusement park, Canada's Wonderland. There were special exhibits, and the score was playing over the speakers throughout the park. Went with all my high school fellow nerds and had a fantastic time. A key memory of my adolescence was getting lost in the music from the final 'Sign Off' sequence, watching the water fountain and light show as the park closed that night. That track is utterly ingrained in my brain, and still gives me chills every single time.

Jen nailed it in her epilogue. I'm one the people who grew up watching Classic Trek. One of my earliest memories is watching Trek with my grandma when Trek first ran on TV. I even remember watching the episode "Obsession" and trying to make an Enterprise out of my Tinker Toys while watching it. It wasnt until watching a rerun in the 70s that I realized it was "Obsession"😃. And I'll admit that as a grown man watching this film in the theater, I cried at the end 🤫

I'm with you, the score for this movie was indeed exceptional. It really enhanced the intensity and emotions of the story. I also love how quickly you fell in love with the crew. They are legendary for sure. But ... If you'll continue on to The Next Generation to find a whole new and wonderful crew to fall in love with just as much. You may even see some of this crew again, if you continue on. 😉 This movie, Directed by Nicholas Meyer, as a mystery is an extension of Mr. Meyer's early writing career. He wrote a handful of Sherlock Holmes novels. I got them a few years ago and after reading them I saw his style at work in this movie. It's one of the reasons this is, for me, my favorite of the Original Series movies. My favorite line is from Spock "What we need now is a feat of linguistic legerdemain and a degree of intrepidity..." translation "What we need now is a lot of bullsh*t and a little luck." 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣. Love it! Spock is the man! I saw this in the theaters with a group of friends. Our reaction was the same, satisfaction and a few tears. I grew up with this crew. I watched the shows and movies and even read all the novels up to this time. The sign off left me choked up and feeling a loss of friends I grew up with. Fortunately, the loss was temporary only. If you keep going you'll see what I mean.

This is my favorite Trek movie. Seeing the characters grow and complete their arcs was amazing. This movie came out right at the fall of the Berlin Wall, so the parallel between Klingons and Russians was evident. The music was amazing,, I sometimes listen to it while working. Your reaction was great. You are a true Trek fan. I am looking forward to your reactions to TNG. There are lots of good episodes there.

The novelization makes several parts of the movie make alot more sense. First, the chancellor fully expected to be assassinated given his political views, he just didn't know when or by who, but strongly suspected chang, which is one of the reasons he calls out trying to find him during the attack. He also knew kirk was not involved in the assassination because he recognized the type of phaser used in the attack was a particularly destructive one that was banned and wouldn't have been available on the enterprise. The klingon guards who communicated with the enterprise when they were trying to cross the border didn't believe what they were told at all, knew they weren't a klingon ship and assumed they were smugglers, using an old dialect of klingon. The don't catch any bugs stuff was a hint to them not to get caught smuggling. Its also brought up that everyone involved was under the influence of a group of telepaths pushing them to carry out the assassination as part of a romulan plot to provoke a war they would benefit from

In the original series the Klingons were always meant to be stand ins for the Soviets and this movie is meant to be Star Trek's end to the cold war (the cold war was ending as the film was being made and the USSR dissolved the same month it came out). Its my favorite Trek movie bar none. Love your commentary, as always. I find it particularly enjoyable how you will notice things about the scores of movies during your first viewing that I never noticed no matter how many times I have watched.

Valeris was supposed to be Saavik, thereby being more surprising that she would be a traitor. But Gene Roddenberry threw a fit at the idea of any of the crew bring a traitor. Nicholas Meyer’s response was essentially, “I created Saavik in WRATH OF KHAN, I can do whatever I want with her.” But when he couldn’t get Kirstie Alley to come back, Meyer caved and turned her into Valeris. (I guess Meyer didn’t want Robin Curtis, who played Saavik in 3 and 4, to come back.)

4:50 Saavik was to have reprised her role in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, but was replaced with Valeris, reportedly because Gene Roddenberry was concerned that fans had become so fond of Saavik that they would react negatively to her turning out to be a traitor. Wow, Star Trek VI… we’ve got here so soon! I feel almost sad that Jen has reached this point so quickly, but it’s been a fun ride and I love how much she’s fallen in love with our heroes. This movie really was a cracking send-off for our crew, too, thought it’s not without its flaws. Like, how come Martia’s clothes change shape when she does, and why does her voice only change when she mimics Kirk?! 😁 The movie was pretty much the brainchild of Leonard Nimoy and Nicholas Meyer, and was a very direct allegory on the state of relations between the US and Russia at the time. There are many references to real events, such as the Praxis explosion, which was inspired by the Chernobyl disaster. That event pretty much crippled the Soviet economy and opened the door to reform, and so we a Klingon character based on Gorbachev - the moderate reformer Chancellor Gorkon (who was physically modelled on Abraham Lincoln). Also, most of the extreme views held by Starfleet officials and Klingons (“Conquer them now while they’re weak” vs “Attack now while we still have the strength”) were views that were held by extremists in the military of both the US and Russia, who couldn’t handle the sudden transition to peace. Gene Roddenberry (who had been pretty much frozen out of the film series since the Motion Picture) really didn’t like the overly militaristic and intolerant vibes that Nimoy and Meyer put in the film, because he had always said that humanity would’ve evolved past such concerns by the time of Star Trek. However, one of the great strengths of science fiction is that it allows us to examine modern issues at one remove, so while the story might not be 100% true to Star Trek, it was a good opportunity to explore what was going on in the world at the time and tie up some of the issues that had arisen during the films. As for the movie itself, it lacks the polish that Meyer’s other involvements with the franchise had. The political commentary is quite heavy-handed, the dialogue somewhat on-the-nose and Meyer’s use of literature quotations gets a bit out of hand at times… but all that doesn’t really matter because the Star Trek charm is present in full force, each character gets a moment and Christopher Plummer is chewing scenery in a delightful fashion! As swan songs go, it’s a pretty damn good one! Final obligatory fun fact: Originally, it was Sulu and his crew that were supposed to figure out how to beat Chang, which is why at the beginning of the film we hear about how the Excelsior had been charting gaseous anomalies: it was the ship that was carrying the equipment necessary to sniff out Chang’s cloaks Bird Of Prey, and they would’ve retrofitted the torpedo… but Shatner thought that it should be the Enterprise crew that figured it out, so it was switched. All in all I agree with Shatner.

I adore this movie. I can probably recite the first half of this script from memory. It was such a perfect swan song for the original cast -- a restatement of the themes of the Cold War inspired original, while accepting that time marches on. It wasn't just a good ending for the crew, it, as Trek has always been, a commentary on its time.

This movie came out when I was a kid and it's been my favorite Star Trek movie to this day. I've always loved the familiar interactions between the crew to where they might frustrate the hell out of each other but they still know where they stand.

Jen, it has been a great joy, getting to relive these movies with you. I watched and enjoyed the show since it first aired in 1966, and I am mostly pleased with the movies. Even my least favorite, #5, is salvaged by the great line "What does God need with a starship?" The Cold War between the USA and what used to be the Soviet Union was drawing to a close, the USSR officially dissolving at the end of 1991. The Klingons had always been stand-ins, in a way, for the Soviets, so come 1989 it seemed natural to tell a story about changing relations between the Federation and the Klingons. The "Praxis" incident which literally started our story off with a bang was a kind of tribute to Chernobyl. You're right, our gallant crew deserved a great sendoff and they got it. I like to think that this was, for its time, a kind of equivalent of Avengers: Endgame. Thanks!

I believe you're correct about the Klingons being stand-ins for the Soviets, and about Praxis. Further, I believe that the Vulcans were intended to represent the Japanese, and the Romulans represented Communist China. In my view, Star Trek has always been a veiled story about geopolitical tensions in the world in the current time or recent past. And might I say, you're one of the very few people I have seen make that observation.

So in case you are not a student of history, this movie is essentially the end of the Cold War in space. When pitching this film, Lenard Nimoy . Wanted this to be about the end of the “Fall of the Berlin wall in space.” he was so hooked on this movie that in order to do the proposed episode of the next generation, he only do it if he were allowed to advertise this movie during that episode, turns out it was called reunification, and it’s about the proposed union of the Romulans and the Vulcans back as a single species again. Praxis is the Klingon main energy facility. This is a direct allegory for the incident at Chernobyl 1986. Chancellor Gorkon is an allegory for general secretary, Gorbachev. Whom was a game changer in the Cold War. Another historical reference is Admiral North played by Future Star Trek Star René Auberjonois. He is an allegory to General West of the Contra affair. Rura Penthe is an obvious play at the Siberian Gulags/concentration camps. The plot of the movie itself is actually based on a hypothetical World War III scenario where the Soviet union murders Gorbachev. The role of Valeris was originally intended for Saavik. Christy Alley refused the role because she felt the script did not fit her character. It is my opinion that if the cut material for Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock stayed. Like her being half Romulan and the romance with David it would give a sorta duality to the piece.

It was rare when it happened, but my entire family -- even my dad, who was not really a movie person -- went to see this on opening night. It was an amazing experience. The entire audience was so into it. There was laughter, applause, cheering when the bad guys blew up and when Scotty got the sniper. It was truly a memorable experience to be with the original crew for their last adventure on that Friday night, December 6, 1991. Like Star Trek III and IV, this movie had a more ensemble feel, with every character getting to do something interesting on screen. Probably my favorite of the Star Trek movies! Your reaction to these is fantastic!

I saw it went it first came out too!!!! Praxis exploding made me jump lol! Do you remember if they're were scenes or bits in the theater premiere that weren't on tape later on? I have a the directors cut on DVD and one example is that when the sniper at the end is shot by Scotty and falls to the floor you hear word say "this is not Klingon blood" and they remove the Klingon mask to reveal a starfleet officer was the sniper. I seem to remember that worf line was in the movie in the theater. Do you?

Sulu as captain of the Excelsior was weird. What leaked out at the time was that Takei wouldn’t come back unless they made him a captain. Shatner was asked about this on Howard Stern and Shatner said his reaction was, “So he doesn’t want to be in the movie?” Howard and Robin had fun with the idea that George was confused and thought there was a real Starfleet and George thought he was overdue for promotion, but Shatner had a point - the story is the people on the Enterprise and for Sulu to be captain of his own ship means he won’t be with everyone on the Enterprise. Now, whether this was an early incarnation of Takei not wanting to put up with Shatner any more or Takei being the one with the out of control ego on this occasion, Nicholas Meyer (as someone told me who may or may not have known what he was talking about) looked at what could have been a nasty pissing contest with one of the supporting cast and decided that Sulu being captain of another ship meant one less cast member he had to find stuff to do on the Enterprise so he was fine with it. “Crisis” averted, right? Another thing about Sulu - I remember talk of a scene with him that was scripted for “Voyage Home” that had Sulu encountering a Japanese American kid in the street who seemed to mistake him for his uncle or something. Turns out, Sulu would realize he had randomly encountered his own great grandfather as a kid, which sounds like a neat idea. I don’t know if it was actually shot but it didn’t end up in the movie in any case, which was a shame.
