Jenna and Julien, I appreciate how respectfully you went about the discussion of karma and the ideas of reincarnation based on sin, especially as a Hindu myself. You are correct in that there are some people who do believe those ideas, unfortunately. But I hope to assure you that the concepts of karma and reincarnation are not inherently bad; they serve as an incentive for humans to strive to be more kind and virtuous. The concept of karma in a past life affecting your current life is controversial between Hindus themselves, and the article you were referring to had a very archaic and in my opinion unfair stance on the issue. Karma is simply "do good, and good will be done for you." That is all that is mentioned in the religious scriptures, so any extrapolation from that is the opinion of an individual and shouldn't be regarded as the belief of a whole people group. Toxic interpretations like this upset me because they disregard all the good beliefs in Hindu scriptures: equality, animal rights, feminism, and powerful female figures. I'm truly sorry you had to learn about these amazing concepts in this way, and I promise you that there are Hindus who interpret these ideas in a more positive manner. To me, the only relation between karma and birth status is the work of the virtuous to help those less fortunate, and I'm happy to hold that belief.

The superpositioning LITERALLY explains how manifestation works. When you have a thought or actually a feeling, that feeling will manifest physically. Say you want a cookie, you imagine what having that cookie would feel like. The taste, smell, what it feels like when you eat it, and the joy and pleasure of having that cookie. You bring elsewhere, here. You don't question it, you just know. When you try to force it or figure out how you're gonna get that cookie, you slow down that process which is synonymous with trying to observe these particles causing the process to collapse. Just some food for thought

@amartinez53264 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and in the case of observing particles it's so difficult because they can only be observed in one state. It's essentially the Schrodinger's Cat experiment where the cat in the box is both dead and alive, but when you open the box you can only see the cat as either dead or alive. And it's really difficult to measure particles being in two physical states bc in experimental physics, you have particles colliding which essentially stop the superpositioning (being in two states at a time). Teleportation would be really difficult to do because these particles choose one state over a period of time, so it's near impossible to make a single object (made up of billions of particles) teleport. Quantum physics is so cool!!!!

Rewatching this podcast I remember a sci-fi short story I once read called "think like a dinosaur" that's about the problem of teleportation, but they aren't actually teleportation people, they are cloning them and rebuilding the clone at the "teleported" location, and its about the guy whose job it is to "dispose of" (kill) the originals. Brings up a lot of questions about identity and stuff that julien briefly talks about. Super worth the like 15 page read.

Hurricanes are extremely predictable. Tornadoes are not. I live in Iowa. I've seen it go from Sunny to 100 mph in a half hour. Your neighbor's house can be ripped off, and yours can be totally fine. Even a single tree could be spared and the one a yard or two next to it can be uprooted and transplanted to the farm down the road. Tornadoes are swift, scary, and surgical.

I live in Oklahoma and so to me, the amazing skies and landscapes and plains are just my everyday life, but recently my best friend came to visit me from Ohio and she was amazed by all the sights. She was even so happy to see something as simple as cows, because in Oklahoma we have plenty of livestock but in Ohio it's more rare. Her perspective of where I live made me see it in an entirely new light, and now I appreciate the starry skies that some people can't see because of light pollution and the mountains that are unique to here and all the landscapes and architecture.

The main problem with joking about the Hindu beliefs is that these beliefs have very serious consequences in Hindu societies. For example, the one about eating without your husband actually leaves some rural women to starve. I read an article about a starving woman who wouldn't eat without her husband who was cheating on her and eating at his mistress's house.
@JennaMarbles7 жыл бұрын
TopHatKitty trust me I'm aware that these are real which is why I gave a disclaimer that we are not trying to bash anyone's religion but to discuss that these are some really kind of awful things that exist and how other people are treated in different belief systems. I think that's the point of bringing it up because it differs so vastly from how we see people, hence my jaw dropping and being shocked. I really had no idea how specific the sins and punishments were and it just hurt my soul so much.
@user-um5qc2bb7j7 жыл бұрын
JennaMarbles I completely agree with the fact that our cultures entirely change how our religious beliefs are put together. Many religions and cultures still mock women and I think that's horrible, but I think it's horrible because I belong to the group that was or could be discriminated against. A women from Saudi Arabia may not even have a fathomable idea of feminism or a woman being in power. I think that's horrible, but she may not.

We have GREAT convos about both of them and a lot of you(this might be partially due to most of Jenna's audience is late teens/adults in their 20s) are able to balance both fuckery and know when to be serious. I've never been in a fandom like this. Love you all, and I love how I'm seeing people show our Otts such unconditional love and maturity that they only have to say, "Hey, Vlogmas is a little overwhelming" to get an en masse of "Hey, we'll be fine, take a few days off, we got this."

It depends on the belief in question. It makes sense to respect it an opposing view that does no harm. But respecting bigotry simply because it's framed as a ~belief~ doesn't make you mature. If someone thinks a specific group of people is inherently inferior, it's a lot more mature to oppose it so that we can evolve as a species, instead of 'respecting' it because you want to avoid conflict.

I agree with this, but the belief she was addressing doesn’t offer “disrespect” until what they believe to be the next life’s, so it’s best to be respectful if there’s no real disrespect being presented. It is problematic though. (Sorry idk if I explained my point well enough)

I completely understand why Jenna is being so open minded and accepting of other ideas regarding the spiritual conversation But damn was I glad to hear that Julien doesn’t agree. You can’t justify every action. Im proud Julien. It takes guts on a podcast

I was thinking the same, Jenna was trying to be way too 'respectful' about that religion. Not all things need to be respected and it doesn't matter if it's part of a religion or a culture

To be honest, I'm just finishing out my last semester of my senior year of high school and soon going into my freshman year of college. I had plans to kill my self before I had the chance to think about college and now I'm doing it. I'm registered. I'm graduating in May. I'm surviving and I'm happy. Y'all helped me through a whole lot of bumps in the road and I don't know where I would be without your goofy podcasts and vlogs.

I hope you’re doing well still. Just please remember to give yourself credit for surviving that tough time in your life and taking steps to make things better. It’s ok to acknowledge people who have helped you along the way, but ultimately YOU saved YOUR OWN life and you should give yourself, not anyone else, credit for that.

I know I'm very late, but I want to explain the phenomena of observing something and changing it! One way to think about it is in order for our eyes to see something, there needs to be light. In quantum physics, light is made up of tiny particles called photons, and shining light on something is the same as shooting a bunch of photons at it. Photons don't have mass, but they do have energy, so a collision with a photon would alter the properties of whatever you're shooting them at, significantly if the object is a subatomic particle. This illustrates the basic principle of how we as humans can't observe something at a subatomic level without changing it in some way.

'observation' in quantum mechanics doesn't mean some dude has to stare it down to psyche it out. It just means that any physical interaction will disrupt it. Like shining light on it or it hitting something. That's an observation. Until then it can be in a smooth wave state and when observed it instantly focused into a particle at some location where the 'observation' happens.
@DanFrederiksen7 жыл бұрын
A little light in space sends out a wave in all directions and only when it hits something does it become a photon particle event and the wild thing is that the energy for that particle is drawn from the entire wave that went in all directions instantly. Even though that energy might be 2 light years in the other direction. Even if it traveled for a billion years.
@DanFrederiksen7 жыл бұрын
It's a bit like an expanding balloon and then you pop it at some location and all the balloon goes there. Or a thin shaving of the balloon goes there while the rest of the balloon continues to expand.

Absolutely. The wave-particle duality is interesting, and the electron double slit experiment is quite something. However, if you take the elaboration of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox, and think of the issues of Quantum Entanglement ("spooky action at a distance") reality suddenly became a whole lot stranger. Because in the end we and the whole visible world around us consist of atoms, and the constituents of the atom is elementary particles (ex. if you break down the proton), as of where you dive into the realm of, yes - quantum mechanics. General relativity and the entire standard model with the higgs field/higgs boson etc.etc. is seemingly hardly half the story.. and thats just the realm of visible matter, of which is the lesser entity of the universe. I personally have, after studying this, sort of concluded with, especially with the newer forms of double slit experiments, that nature itself seems to have some sort of built in "protection" against being observed at its smallest form, in a definitive state that is. Im trying to put it simple but, these things, and quantum entanglement, shows that at a quantum level, reality - space - time(i.e as the 4th dimension in the function of the space-time continuum), no longer matters. The laws of general relativity doesnt apply if youre ex. the theoretical tachyon, and at the same time, they dont apply to an entangled pair of particles either. Any observation will define their state seemingly instantly, regardless of distance. We have defined reality around principles that seems to be alot more fluid and less rigid than we perceive them to be.
