I saw a tip somewhere (sorry I don’t remember where) to use a wooden soap dish to lay brushes on. Because the soap dish has a zigzag top, you can lay your brushes horizontally without them rolling off the table. I use it when I’m painting with more than one brush, and also as a place to let the brushes dry after cleaning them. Bonus - I found mine at a dollar store! :)

Thanks. I worked at an art and craft store on stocked brushes. If the cover came off, we did not replace them for fear of messing up the shape. Boiling water maybe fine, but don't dip too deep in the hot water. Boiling water can damage the glue. But great info.

Great input, thanks for sharing. Yes, that hot water could be troublesome to the glue! I don't use this method often, just as a last ditch effort to save a brush -- but that is a good call, thanks for your comment!

I didn’t know I shouldn't store brushes upright after washing them. It makes sense, though, that the water would loosen the glue. I did see a video a while back on how to clean brushes. The person said after rinsing the brushes to use “The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver.” Get some on the brush, swirl it in your palm until it’s clean, and rinse. Then you can get more on the clean brush and store the brush with it on the hairs. It will be slightly stiff the next time you use the brush, but it comes off when dipped in water.

I got dried pigment on my brush too.. Thankfully it came off after cleaning it with let's call it "the brush soap" but I noticed it the next morning. Sometimes it's possible to safe brushes with some and synthetics with boiling water if nothing is working. The boiling water method is something I avoid for the most part.

@@JennaRaineyChannel I tried it once but I'm really concerned using it with good brushes. I guess it will damage the part were the bristles are glued after some time. I used a brush soap that I bought specifically for my brushes. Just to clean my mixed hair brushes with. Staining pigments can stay in natural hair brushes and it's good to wash them really well. It's not necessary with synthetic brushes but when I clean my "good brushes" with soap I sometimes clean all the brushes that I have too.

A few years ago, when I decided I’d give watercolor a try, I bought several master’s touch round brushes from hobby lobby. Not the ones in the packages, but the singles. Very decent brushes, but not having a clue what I was doing I thought the long hairs that formed the points were stray hairs and I trimmed them 😬😭🙄

after rinsing my brush at the sink, I dry them upside down using fridge magnets. The kind with the clamp. I stick them to the fridge upside down. the clamps are big enough that the brush hairs do not touch anything and can dry in the proper shape. When I was in college, many people stored their brushes for travel in a bamboo mat, like the kind uses to roll sushi. roll them up and rubber band shut or use a pretty ribbon.

@@JennaRaineyChannel I do the same- I use a water soluble cheap hair gel on my brushes after I clean them. It dries stiff and keeps the hairs in shape. When I’m ready to paint, a little swirl in the water and it rinses out completely and doesn’t effect the paint or process at all.
@mydogeatspuke

@@saraquigley5414 you can do the same with brush soap too, which contains conditioners. Whether it makes brushes last any longer than just taking good care of them with water and proper drying is unknown, but it also hardens the shaped bristles until the next use.

Hey Jenna :) Love these tips! I tend to use a lot more gouache than watercolour. I'm using princeton round brushes, and I have realised that since gouache is a lot thicker, quite a lot of pigment tends to get stuck at the part where the bristles meet the ferrule. It's taking me quite a white to clean those out and that ends up with me having to swirl them around in water for a significant amount of time. Any tips on that? Thanks

In the jar that you are storing your brushes, place cloves. I keep my brushes in a zip brush case and spray cedar spray on the bottom part that holds the brushes. You do not want to spray this in your brushes

Thanks for all your wonderful Tips regarding Art Material. When I've gone into an Art Shop, the better quality ones have plastic covers on them so you're not able to check out the brush until your home and clean off the substance and I found after several uses hairs started to come out. Of course, the store refused to exchange it, so how can one have a look at it before leaving the store. The brush was a high-end brush and was surprised, perhaps I got a one-off brush. Otherwise, I certainly take care of them.

Awesome video full of quality content. Really glad that this was the first video I saw for painting after staying months away from it. I really loved how things were explained in details. Video not only covered the minute details which we would neglect most of the time but gave really good explanation on how things can make a huge difference in long run. Cherry on the cake for me was tip on how we can save our damaged brushes cause I usually replace them when they get damaged. Loved the video. Keep up the good work Jenna and John :D

Thanks for these helpful tips, Jenna! I use the same brushes and paper as you do and am saving up for some professional paints and palette. (I'm using student grade paints for now as I learn and explore.) Your tip on reshaping the brush hairs was particularly insightful as I haven't been doing that. Thank you for all your tips and tutorials. I always learn so much from you!

So….yeah….I’m guilty of the “Don’t” leave your brush in the water too long. I’m also heavy handed, so I’ve frayed my fair share of brushes…lol. In my efforts to save them, I learned a neat trick(after the boiling tip), and that is to dip the brush into liquid starch (the stuff you would use for ironing/ or making slime concoctions). It will hold the filaments in place as it is drying, which will hopefully return to original state. I’ve been able to save some, & some were not as fortunate. Just something to try…🌺 Thank you for all of your lovely videos, they’ve helped me bunches! 💐

You do all that I do.. I also do the figure 8 movement in the water to clean my brush vs. hitting the bottom of the glass. I thought there was a brush conditioner you can use to fix the hairs? Never tried so don't know. Thanks for the video.

I LOVED what you showed just before this (for me) and you were asking for.advice on the paint and ceiling. I knew I came "late into the game" but it came pouring out of me! Am so impressed! And the plants. Wonderful. I know things will change around a bit as time goes on but it all looks great. Still, there might be something in what I wrote before-regarding two or three-well maybe 4-5 different things that you can actually SEE, at the place and episode I mentioned. Many Congratulations! Thanks for sharing all that you share! Enjoy! Best, TS. (Jenna's Mom)

So helpful, very similar to taking care of good makeup brushes! I'm wondering if there's ever a time you would suggest using soap. Also, I've seen people use hair gel on natural brushes to keep the shape. Do you have any thoughts on that.

Excellent video...thank you so much for the tips and reminders! You have a new fan and subscriber! Only thing I would add is the use of “The Master’s” Brush Cleaner and Preservative soap. It does amazing things for brushes you would assume are “clean”. Or for older brushes, even ones used for oil paints that have been stained many years. Just amazing! You actually keep just a bit on the brush, shape it and allow it to dry. Then just rinse before using. Helps condition the brush and keep it’s shape in storage. Anyway, just my two cents to add to your wonderful, helpful information...thanks again!

If you don't have holders or plastic covers, you can instead just prevent movement of the brush in it's case you're carrying it in. For example if you have a plastic snap shut case, stuffing some paper towel or cloth in there so that there's pressure when you snap it shut will force the brushes up against their sides and prevent them moving. Or as another example, rubber banding brushes together with an index card and taping the card to the container (so you don't tape the actual brush). Or similar.

Your lesson is so helpful! I am guity of letting my brushes dry in the jar.*shame* I am hoping your lesson today will help me. I was sick last fall and my spouse had to call an ambulance. When I got home a week later, realized that the EMTs had knocked off a jar of brushes and the tips had been forced against the wall. 14 brushes became deformed. I am going to try your renewal technique!!

I really liked these maintenance tips I do them all thankfully. I was also hoping for some tips to make them last while using them? How to prevent fraying the tips and that kind of things when dipping in the paints or brushing in the paper etc if there are any tips like that. When I started watercolors, the youtubers I watched would swirl their brushes into de paint pans so, I started doing the same and now I think that is too rough and I wear them down too quickly

I find swirling the brush in a figure 8 several times does a good job of extricating the paint from the brush, I never smash the hairs on the bottom of my glass while I’m cleaning it.

Looks like all three terms you used were correct ✅ Immerse and submerge for dipping in and emerge for pulling out the water Immerse dip or submerge in a liquid. "immerse the paper in water for twenty minutes" emerge /ɪˈməːdʒ/ 1. move out of or away from something and become visible. submerge /səbˈməːdʒ/ cause (something) to be under water. "houses had been flooded and cars submerged"
