Hearing Jeanette’s story broke my heart. So many adults failed her and so many people who had the power to stop what was happening didn’t do so. I wanted to go on Disney as a kid and my mom stopped it real fast. As upset as I was when I was young, I’m grateful she did that. Honestly Hollywood is broken. The Coogan Account was started after Jackie Coogan, a famous actor who played in Charlie Chaplins “The Kid”, and Uncle Fester in the original “Addams Family”, realized his mother had spent all of the money he had earned as a child actor. @dalujo
@dalujo 2 жыл бұрын
@@IdealUser Uhm, who is saying a child needs travel or hotel. You should have saved up for education/hobbies before you have children, its your responsibility as a parent to offer your child access to schooling, sports and art. Who is making a conscious decision to have their child do acting? The parent or the child? It's quite clearly the parent that is in control and thus the party that should pay for it. If the child is apparently talented there should be money designated purely for the purpose of traveling expenses etc. It is pretty clear from this example and the stories about conservatorship that you can't trust people with large amounts of money, not even family. The money should be locked away from any party, to only be given to the child actor when they come of age. The parent should not enjoy a single penny earned through their children's succes, except if they are given this money by their then adult kid. Especially not before the child can actually make a conscious decision themselves on what they want to do with themselves and the money. Otherwise you're basically using your child as an extra sort of income, if you're a parent like that you're a leech.

it sounds a lot like the Coogan situation itself. Coogan was a child actor back in the early-mid 1900s and his parents ripped him off by taking all of his money and he sued them to get it back. That's why there is Coogan account for child actors, so that parents don't rip off child actors. They take part of every pay check and put into a private account(now called the Coogan account) and keep it there so that when the actors turn 18 they see money that they made when they when child actors.

Yep. Studios should be required to have a compliance officer who's job it is to make sure paperwork for Child Actors is filled correctly before children can be used in productions. And if the paper work isn't filed properly, than the studio should be held liable for it.

"the paperwork was never filed" is just her saying she doesn't want to go into it. and she probably isn't completely up to date with the exact details either. studios don't have a choice not to pay into the coogan account, they cannot hire or work actors who do not have it set up. in order for her mother to have funneled it from a coogan account, she went out of her way to do some massively complex bank fraud, not just on the production company that hired Jennette but on the california state government that had to issue Jennette a child acting permit.

Gary Coleman was a great actor a funny guy. It just sucks that his life ended up going the way it did. People need to be better for their kids and we need some sort of regulation against child acting. If children are acting, they are working. They should have all money earned put into an IRA or investment account until they're 18 years of age with nobody else being able to access the money so that they either have a great nest egg to start their life with or a fantastic retirement when they are older.
@theBestElliephant
@theBestElliephant 7 ай бұрын
@@husky3g All of it? Nah. I think it should be more than 15%, at the very least a majority, but there's no reason they should be forced to forgo all of it until they're 18. Like I had part time jobs in high school and it was great using the money for movies and fun extras, there's no reason the same shouldn't be allowed for child actors. But I agree they shouldn't have an excessive amount of money to throw away. I can also get behind a trust, but an IRA is kinda ridiculous cuz there are penalties for making withdrawals before retirement, so you're still not really setting your kid up for success if you dump all their money into that type of account (plus you literally can't cuz there are contribution limits). Like a good retirement is only good if you can financially make it to retirement. The other crinkle for me is that for young kids, you aren't gonna drop your 8yo off at a movie set alone all day like you could with a highschooler at a part time job. I don't think the parents deserve money for watching their own kids, but if their kid's "career" is getting in the way of their own, where's the rent/mortgage payment coming from? It just kinda turns into a vicious cycle at that point though, cuz it goes from something fun the kid may have enjoyed into providing for the family, the only answers seem to be "be independently wealthy" or "be a nepo baby".

Her book was phenomenal. It truly was such a matter of fact look at her childhood trauma and the relief that she felt when her mom died. I can understand that coming from a less toxic mom than her, but still awful. I highly recommend it

I wasn’t a child actor, but I did start mowing lawns when I was 9 back in the 90s. Between lawn money and birthday money I was never allowed to spend, I had over $3000 by the time I was 12 with 3.5% interest on a savings account back in the day. My brother and I built up a pretty good business, and I continued to mow lawns until I was 14 when my mom kicked my dad and I out. When I was 18 and trying to see how much money I had in there when I was heading off to college, I had $238. My mom cleaned me out. I know it’s not to the same scale, but it hurts to know that a parent would steal from a child like that.

God Bless her for coming out and exposing these secrets. Never seen any of the child actors from Disney or Nickelodeon come out and give the honest truth. She definitely needs to be protected, I’m willing to bet she knows some stuff that Dan “the foot man” Schneider doesn’t want getting out (hence the 300k hush money he tried to offer her)

my guy, i promise you if dan schneider had ever done anything nefarious, the actors themselves could ruin him overnight. you really think a producer who doesn’t even work at nickelodeon anymore is more powerful than people like ariana grande??? hell, she could make up a total lie about dan and everyone would still immediately take her side. yet none of the actors have ever come out and said negative things about dan… crazy how that works, huh?

Yeah it can be very problematic. But you also have to consider travel, management & image expenses too since that may be included. If Nick is anything like Disney Channel, actors are hired as independent contractors
