Jennifer Aniston’s interior designer Stephen Shadley talks with Architectural Digest Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley about the 'zen' style and designs of the new home Aniston shares with husband Justin Theroux.
Jennifer Aniston takes AD inside her dreamy California home high above Los Angeles, Jennifer Aniston crafts a scene of pure domestic bliss with husband Justin Theroux, a spectacular midcentury house, and a trio of very happy dogs.
Aniston’s latest residential project is the reimagining of a Bel Air house that was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones and completed in 1965.
The actress acquired the property in 2011, after selling her beloved Hal Levitt-designed home in L.A.’s Trousdale Estates enclave (AD, March 2010) and attempting to relocate to Manhattan-a move ultimately thwarted by the rabid paparazzi that swarmed outside her Greenwich Village apartment building. When she bought the Bel Air property, it had recently emerged from a renovation by architect Frederick Fisher, which, despite its sympathetic embrace of Jones’s vision, skewed a bit too cool and minimal for Aniston’s taste.
Aniston enlisted the aid of AD100 interior designer Stephen Shadley, with whom she had collaborated on her previous L.A. home, to perform a similar alchemy in Bel Air-namely, to preserve the modernist ethos of the original scheme while softening some of its sharp lines and outfitting the interior with tactile, organic finishes and furnishings.
Aniston seconds the notion, pointing to the vintage Jean Royère Polar Bear sofa, Jacques Adnet armchairs, and Mies van der Rohe daybed arranged in the living room. Aniston credits the home’s deftly layered interiors to a team effort, with important contributions by Shadley and L.A. designers Kathleen and Tommy Clements and Jane Hallworth. Theroux weighed in as well.
Aniston describes the centuries-spanning decor as “Old World meets New World,” a polyglot mix of hand-painted wallpaper and midcentury furniture, silk rugs and polished concrete, antique Japanese screens and Abstract Expressionist paintings. Yet for all the pedigreed pieces on display-artworks by Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, and Glenn Ligon; furnishings by Vladimir Kagan, Edward Wormley, and Arturo Pani-the real triumph rests in the harmony of the various decorative compositions within Shadley’s reconceived interior architecture.
Garden designer Marcello Villano and landscape architect Anne Attinger reorganized the alfresco spaces as a series of interconnected outdoor rooms, terraces, and Asian-inspired pocket gardens.

Yes he is! A lovely man but then I can't imagine her letting anyone design her home that was not that way. She's so real lovely and down to earth herself. And creating such a personal space is very personal and unique.😊

jen is really literally a one of a kind of celebrity. she's very down to earth, never let the fame get to her head, still as sweet and loving as she was 30 years ago. she's very private about her life and keeps it that way and doesn't just go out and about sharing everything, which keeps that mystery around her which makes her just more loveable in my opinion. and to top it off, she has the greatest sense of style, in decorating, in clothes, in just everything.

While I was looking for a walk through of the house with Jen, I was surprised that it was an interview of Stephen Shadley. It was great to see him front and center and get the credit he deserves. Often time with celeb walking through their home, they fail to mention who made that interior happen.

Even people with comfortable family homes can have a "metal of choice". Maybe the choices are more limited, but you dont need to be wealthy to make customizations to your home or even hire an architect and make your own home from the ground up.

I am totally surprised and delighted. I was so very wrong about Jennifer Aniston's taste. I had her marked as favoring a girly, fluffy and flowery kind of interiors not something understated luxe, dark, masculine and sexy! Both houses were beautifully done - kudos both to the designer and the owner (who has great eye and excellent taste in art).

Okay, so let's talk about the architect. This man has a youthfulness, humility and pleasantness to him that I find genuinely startling and looking at the comments a lot of people seem to agree. His aura is so vivid that you can't help but notice it but at the same time it's not overwhelming. This video is about the design in Jen's house yet I found his mannerisms and his voice more intriguing especially when contrasted to the interviewer. I think it's profound that someone like him -an expert at what he does and one who is and has been in the kind of circles that his work would allow him to frequent- seems so approachable and considerate of the voice of other people (the interviewer) even when he is the one who has been invited to speak on a topic he obviously has a higher information on. The lack of condescension in his tone when he agrees with the interviewer who answers a question she asked herself is beautiful. You've represented yourself well in 11 minutes sir. It would be an honour to work with you on a space one day.

Ms Rana Ms Rana except it wasn't... the title was; (Paraphrased) 'Jennifer's DESIGNER breaks down'... she finished his sentences and stepped over every single sentence... Example: 2:13 he starts to talk, seconds later she says; "yeah yeah yeah", cutting off his pov and proceeds to inject HER pov... at 2:32 he again starts to talk about Justin's pov... 2 seconds later she cuts him off yet again to inject HER points again!! This was repeated throughout the... I can't even call it an 'interview'... ?? Here's the question. This was supposed to be a designer's point of view on designing 2 of Jennifer's homes and included her boyfriend, right? Without watching it again, what do you remember about what HE said ???? Again, he was seriously short changed here and that's a real shame.

Agree. What I found equally annoying was her pushy tabloid need to find out about the couple and couple dynamics at the beginning. Stephen obviously has more professionalism than that, so good for him applying the discretion he wasnt afforded by Amy the interviewer. He remained focused on the design components and the influences coming together rather than about the personal wife & husband per se. Let's respect designers better Arch Digest by remembering they are interviewed to present the vision agreed with their client and how it was executed. It is not the designer's role to discuss client's relationship & certainly not for the insight Amy was pushing for.

That design at 0:23 on this video made my knees weak. I was standing up and I had to sit down. That is the most beautiful room I've ever seen in my life. It was a small room. But, the lighting, the colors, the layout and the view outside the room are breathtaking. If I ever have money to build a house, I am building it exactly like that. That's why I took a snapshot of that room. Now lets pray I get money someday.

Aniston has a taste for lamps. Cool office. Warm modernity. Not her forever house. I like very much the element her husband added where those bikes stand.
