I understand a bit of German and I had a very hard time understanding her, she has a very thick accent. Is the Swiss accent and is this normal? Can someone elaborate?

Swiss dialects are also a foreign language for most Germans. When we talk to them they kindly switch to standard German. Otherwise you won't understand anything.
