"Italian" in the US is associated with Italian-Americans, specifically the large Italian-American community in New York City area-- Martin Scorsese films, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, "Sopranos", Jersey Shore stuff....where Italian-Americans are very loud, demonstrative, passionate, hand talkers, big eaters etc. Most Italian-Americans came from the southern, darker complexioned parts of Italy. Americans think John Turturro is the standard Italian look. Americans are bad at identifying where Northern Italians are from.
