My decision was firmly made at the “one time payment” point. I’m not about to ‘rent’ editing software for any amount of time.

I love LumaFusion but the lack of automatic title animation and the ability to draw directly on videos make FCP a winner. I don’t want to re-learn it, but I may have to.

Subscription model is enough to keep me from using FC for iPad. Subscriptions are a scam. "Subscription" is just a new age word for "Rent", and we all know that when you rent it always goes up, and up, and up.

I am an avid photo taker and editor but only an occasional video editor and a LumaFusion user. I’m pretty agile with software but frankly, every time I come to use Luma, I feel I have to relearn it again and stumble with finding how to do the non mainstream stuff - as per your UI comments. Further, I am not anti subscription models - e.g. I feel I get good value from Adobe - so maybe try FCP especially now I have my M4 iPad. BTW owned FCP on my iMac for a few years! Great job as always.

I liked 'Auto Ducking' in Lumafusion, but have switched to FCP for iPad as for me it is quicker to use and I found LumaFusion had a lot of bugs that meant you had to leave and go back into screens

As someone that’s used LumaFusion for awhile now, I’m very intrigued with FCP. LumaFusion I feel has steadily gotten worse with its bugginess, and slows down a lot when the project gets bigger. It’s been fine for me when it comes to smaller and/or less intensive projects, but when I start adding a lot of extra clips/pictures and transitions/animations into my videos, it slows down a ton.

The slow down thing sounds like your computer/iPad. I've never had that issue.

Hmm, I’ve used both just a bit for the last year, just trying them out. I was overjoyed when FCP for ipad came out! I have used fcp since version 1.0 on my first computer ever, a Apple G3 tower. And FCP cost $1,000 then in 1999, 2000. Video editing more of a hobby at this point, and all of it on ipad air m2 only. I now have a more serious project with 16GB in vid & photos in use. The timeline is now CRAP…slow, jumpy, it has become not fun but a nightmare to edit. I fact I am scheduled for a support call with Apple any minute. I don’t know enough to compare both, but fcp is barely working on this one project. Smaller projects and testing videos, it worked great. I’ll see what Apple says. Aloha.

Great comparison, I’m get an iPad Pro next week and I’m on defence regarding Luma fusion and Final Cut Pro cause I want to take my video editing to the next level. I currently use iMovie on my iPhone and it’s pretty basic but it gets the job done but I wanna take my video editing to the next level which would you recommend out of Final Cut Pro or Lumea fusion

Unfortunately, I have an older iPad and am not in a position to upgrade. But, if I was, or maybe rather, when I am in a position to do so - I will likely use both Lumafusion and FCP, at least until one becomes the clear winner in terms of providing everything the other does and more. The subscription pricing for FCP seems reasonable and LF’s one-time prices are also reasonable for what they provide. It is interesting to hear that the subscription model likely contributes to more frequent updates, which calls my aversion to subscription models into question. Thanks for the review. Very informative.

I hate subscriptions but I also work for a software developer and subscriptions are a godsend. The drama of selling gaps between major versions is just maddening vs. the steady income of a software tool that you keep updating. If the price and features make sense, I've learned to make peace with paying subscriptions. I got FCP at an Editor's Retreat for free a decade ago so I imagine one day I'll have to pony up.

Hi Jenn, a nice comparison of these two Apps. I use FCP on MacOS since it came out, an I use LumaFusion since version 2.7, when it had only three tracks video and three tracks audio. I have an iPad 9th Gen., so FCP for iPadOS won't work, but when it is time for a new iPad it will be one that is suitable for FCP on iPad. Thank you for this review.

If Apple added better color correction, lut imports, custom presets and preset import (specially from Luma since I have about 30 custom presets), and speed ramping, I would leave LF and the beta tester program and do the iPad FCP yearly subscription in a heartbeat.

My thing is fcpx for iPad feels watered down. And having investments already in their plugins for the desktop version, will Final Cut Pro charge to have already paid plugins or make user buy plugins exclusively for the iPad version. At least with the desktop version it’s already a one time fee that’s paid. The whole subscription thing is very contracting when the desktop version is one time. I ve tried to edit videos in my iPad and I simply cant do it. For short form videos yes, but I might as well just use CapCut which is free. And then there’s Davinci resolve for iPad if I want more power. I don’t know what it is about users trying to make iPads a laptop replacement but it’s just not when it comes to serious work

Title transitions on Lumia I literally sure all the regular transitions on my titles. As far as multi camera I just stack my footage in the timeline and line them up myself. It takes a few seconds and keeps the price at $30.

My own guess is this is part of Apple's next "10-year plan" for FCP, something they said would happen when FCPX was introduced in 2011. They've learned from that lack of transition. They entered into the iPad NLE market to aggressively pursue the change there and gradually bring it over to FCP desktop. I think we're going to see that with AI development in FCP iPad and FCP Desktop over the next year or so. I think parts of that are why FCP Camera happened as well as moving the camera position on the latest iPads along with the M4 chip appearing there first. Apple is in the process of creating a much-improved ecosystem for FCP. I think it will also include better collaboration tools. The whole transition may take a couple of years but I think we're going to see much more rapid development by the middle of next year (I speculate). The upcoming macOS will open that door.

Great comparison. Now you should do a comparison of FCP against Resolve for the iPad. BTW, in Resolve you can get all pages. Or even do a comparison of all three apps. I’m a long time FCP user (going back to FCP version 3 but I’m also using Resolve as I had having to get out of FCP and go to Logic Pro for audio work then back. Also Resolve’s color page is the very best. Again, a comparison of all three apps would be great.

rhyde. $5. a month is nothing. I don’t get it either why people reject an app for this payment reason? What matters is, the use of the app and how that works and feels! Well also one’s age matters, at age 70 now (wow!) I don’t care so much about owning FCP over renting it!

I don’t do video enough to justify a monthly rental. I can sometimes go 6 months or more between video projects, so that monthly fee is going for nothing. And I don’t do it professionally, so it’s even more difficult to justify the monthly (or annual) cost for access to the software. Sorry, Apple. Not doing it!
