LYRICS:
Make way for the new time
Can't wait on the side lines
Making promises you don't understand
To people who aren't listening
No one is gonna tear my hand
Away
I can't look back and I can't look away
Swear that I won't ever be
Just a flash or memory
A shadow that locks up hypnotized
From watching your ribcage fall and rise
But I'll fade if you just avert your eyes
Away
I can't look back and I can't look away
I wake up great
I wake up fine

You know, what he did at the very end of that episode wasnt only the nicest thing he ever did to his mother but the nicest thing anyone has done to her. He gave her peace. He could have just walked away and left her in the personal hell he wanted to leave her in but instead he did the right thing

@@phylippezimmermannpaquin2062 So true . In his mother's most vulnerable moment, instead of telling her to go fuck herself, he just couldn't. He managed to show compassion towards someone who despised him. That small act of redemption really deepened Bojack's character.

I think it's something like... They created this character who was an incredibly realistic portrayal of depression, self-loathing and self-sabotage. They made you identify with him, even when he was at his worst and when he did horrible things. It's incredibly depressing and can be hard to watch. We've seen this character go through flat out tragedy, much of which was his own fault. You know he deserves some of it, but you also feel utterly horrible for him because he didn't deserve what made him into him. But then, after all that, we see him getting better, and it's believable. It doesn't come off as trite or condescending. It legitimately feels like he's made the effort and succeeded in being better than the man he was, and life doesn't punish him for that. Instead, someone is appreciative of what he did for them and genuinely likes them because of him trying to be better, and he's gone a decent ways toward repairing the relationships he had damaged. The fact that a show can do that without it feeling fake is frankly incredible. But most important of all, it succeeds in telling its viewers that this is possible for everyone, if they work towards it. Which is a message I think a lot of us needed to hear. Oh, and this song is fucking incredible. I will be buying the music, which is rare for me to do because I'm really cheap.

Hi, thanks you for this message, which is incredibly true. Sometimes it's hard to watch BJ, and I might want to never wake up the next morning, because as I am identify with him, I feel that he has no hope, does desperate things and huge errors just because of cynism. Also depression makes us self-obsessed, in a self-loathing way. But eventually, the good in the character is in his link and love to the others characters, and it's when he doesn't isolate himself that he becomes better. Hollyhock is such a good surprise in the show, she brings light and hope ! Anyway, thanks, hope you're well 1 year after haha !

This song and Bojack Season 4 have helped me pull myself out of a really deep hole mentally. For the last several weeks I've listened to this song when I wake up and it has motivated me to start improving my life. Since the S4 finale I have finally gotten a job, cleaned my apartment, got on medicaid so I can finally see a doctor, and started paying off my old debts. The whole time I'm just thinking to myself "I can't look back and I can't look away" - like yeah I've made things bad, but I can't look back on that, I just need to fix them and move on. And the lines "Wake up great, I'll wake up fine" I keep telling myself because it reminds me that my happiness is 70% my choosing to be happy; so I do, and I am. For the first time in longer than I can remember I am actually happy. Anyone who tells you a show like this is stupid, or that it can't mean anything - This show has and continues to change my life. And Jenny Owens Young, I hope you know how much this song means to me.

The worst thing about listening to this song is the knowledge that the show does not end there... It hurts so damn much to know the future... Still, that ending, that smile, that rare moment of pure happiness and the warmth you can just _feel_ through the screen, brought about by the knowledge that _somebody does want him after all_ ... that is a moment I'd absolutely die for. I will always cherish it. Hollyhock was such a huge positive force in his life. I love her for that. ...And I LOVE this song. What a season finale.

This song and Bojack both have made such a positive impact on my life. I used to all cranky most of the time because of my frustrating college life and relationships that go nowhere. But after watching all these seasons, i realized its okay. Not everyone is made for me and my life, I should instead focus on those that I have, like family, pets, friends. i should try to be nice because they have always been there for me. Also no matter how frustrating college can be, it has taught me a lot about life.

Some people do not deserve time or energy because they are immune to help. Bojack's addictive personality got stuck in Horsin' around, so only he could provide himself with happiness, sad that no-one could explain that to him. The fame and depression MADE people go to him, take care of him, which, in the end, was all completely pointless. At least that's the ending i saw.

Same here - great series, and this song really got me at the end. I've sought out the whole album, and it's excellent stuff.

Ben Goudie I was so scared the show was going to get stale and have bojack sink even lower. The season 4 ending is what I wanted. Also as someone who tried to kill themselves back in February and have been making a honest effort attending mental health groups and trying to curb my self destructive and self sabotaging behaviour since march I really needed this. if that makes sense

I'm glad you found some good support - I've had struggles in a similar direction in the last few years. And yes, I find parts of the show intensely relatable - so an ending like that, with some hope, helps a lot.

I want bojack to be happy, but after 4 seasons I'm positive that this isn't going to end pretty. It may end happy but its not gonna end well for everyone. Spoilers: After the scene with bojacks mom and multiple hints throughout i bet that bojacks gonna realize having a family is equally painful as it is blissfull
@BAGA-fy1kd

It is entirely likely he will discover that before the show is over. But I think a running theme of the show is the futile struggle to escape pain, and coming to terms with the fact that happiness is fleeting and the pain never goes away fully. But some types of pain are more bearable than others, and the pain of family is often more bearable than the pain of loneliness and self-hatred. Something I've noticed was sort of a secondary focus of this season is actually how much better equipped Bojack is to handle life than the rest of the cast. The second episode demonstrates this when he and the fly get into it we learn a bit about Bojack's philosophy, and it's what allowed him to move on from Sarah Lynn's death where the fly got hung up on his mistake for years. Bojack's ability to feel all of the pain of his failures, and then move on, is what makes him the 'hero' of the show. All of the other characters practice some sort of avoidance delusion to escape the pain when life turns up the heat.

Bethany Anne Azemus but here's the thing. I don't think he's really moved on. You can really see this when they do the bit about whst he thinks. Theres a bit about the voces in his head getting more and more intense about his self hatred. Eventualy ended with this is why sarah lynn died. I have know doubt that the series will end conclusively, but i dont think its going to be one that's all that happy.

Yeah, those voices won't go away, but I think this is a turning point where he won't feel like he has to face them alone - a sentiment echoed by literally every other main character except Mr. Peanutbutter (who also happens to be portrayed rather negatively). The point of this show, to me at least, isn't that our problems and flaws aren't always things that can be overcome; it's that we don't have to face them alone. We can choose to let other people in and be truly vulnerable, and that's when the healing can begin.

This is probably my favorite animated show/series in the world, and I've seen a lot that were actually sad including movies like a silent voice, and action packed shows like MHA and the DB series. When I first watched this I had a good laugh at how stupid it was, and when it got serious, I was just immerged into it. I never knew how much I needed something like this in my life. And I know this comment is a couple of years too late but I've re-watched it again and I must say. I still hate the ending, it's not that it wasn't good because it was amazing but it just wasn't what I was expecting.

I fucking love bojack horseman, you really feel like you can relate to him even if you don’t. You feel everything he feels, and you laugh at all the stupid, and funny moments. By far one of my favorite shows I’ve seen. I immediately looked for this song after finishing season 4. Hopefully there’s a season 5?
