Here we go, my complete creative process when writing my book. You guys asked me to make a video on this - about how I came up with the idea and how I wrote the first draft (which took just 7-8 weeks!) because I had so much of the story in my mind, and then just needed to get it out of me. But after 'the end' there were months and months of editing. Anyway, hope this video is helpful to anyone out there that wants to write their own novel or get going on a new creative project.
I talk about:
- writing my book
- my creative process
- how I wrote my first draft
- how to plan a story
- the release of my debut novel
- why writing short stories are important
- how it is to work with a copy editor
- how to get published
- how to find an agent
- my writing schedule
- how many words i write per day
- how to edit a book
- what my book is about

I wrote a novel and my agent is shopping it around. As I wait, I’m thinking about my next story and I realize I have begun writing, even though I’m just thinking and taking notes. I’m allowing myself pure creativity and freedom and chaos at this stage. At some point something will click and it will be time to create structure. I love the entire process, even editing!

Can't wait to read it! My advice for writing is to just sit and write without autocensorship. When I was creating the first draft of my book, I made myself just sit every morning for an hour and write whatever comes to mind. I repeated that process until I filled up the whole notebook, which took just 2weeks, definitely less than what I expected. Currently, I'm in the process of transcribing it to digital form and editing as I go. The plan is to publish in the next 6 months! If you have any advice on (self) publishing, dear Jenny, let us know in another video, it would be very helpful!

I love hearing to talk about your creative proces! 😊 I often start with stand-alone scenes too. An image of a situation, or a feeling will come to me and I will write it. Those scenes might end up in a short story, an idea for a novel, or nowhere at all. But even if I never end up using them, I love that I am exercising both my writing muscle and my imagination. I have only written short stories so far, but I would love to write a novel one day.

I loved this video!! I always find learning about people’s creative process fascinating. I’m more of a maximalist myself, and my creative process tends to be chaotic, spontaneous and ad hoc (basically the opposite of you), but I still found this video eye opening and magical. There really is beauty in our differences. Thank you for inspiring us, and I’m hoping to get a copy of your book when it’s out ❤

Loving this vid! Please please please tell us more about the process 🤗 Was it hard to write in your second language or did you make a draft and keep notes in your native language? So interesting! And how was the editing? Did you have to make a few rounds or your draft was almost perfect on the first try? Did you consider self-publishing at all? Sorry for so many questions ☺

I pre ordered my copy yesterday and can't wait. Its interesting that you found going for a walk helpful. Every morning I come up with snippets, snippets of scenes or dialogue or just snippets of stories. Then when I get home I get so caught up in the routine of the 9 - 5 that I never get round to writing anything down. In the video you show both laptop and notepad. Clearly a laptop is essential for the bulk of writing but do you use a notebook too? Thanks for sharing your tips. One of these days I may finally put pen to paper!

Thanks for your inputs! Don't have plans to write a book but definitely can relate to the joy you are having during the planning phase of a project! What is the planning for you in your mind? A lose guideline for writing? A rope to hold to when it gets difficult? A safety net in order to not get lost on the way? Just a useful tool? - all the best for your second book:)

I love this! Thank you for breaking this down. This might seem basic, but how did you even write the initial short story? Or how did you start writing the thriller? I mean that both in terms of how to make yourself do it and how to create a story.

very interesting video, thanks for sharing! I have one question: when you talk about scenes/ short stories that you wrote, which frame did you have for these scenes? Like what did you know for sure before starting? For example the location, people, vibe, ... or also which time frame you wanted it to play in etc. ? So I gues my question is how freely should one start ? I am very motivated now to also jump into it just for fun. :)

2:55 OK, the first short story is the first chapter. Is the fifth short story (the one furthest into the book) chapter 5 or is it further on? For, if it is further on, you obviously wrote chapters in between already existing chapters - am I correct about this guess?

9:29 Ah, you can write 5000 words per day, in a pinch? I've been up in 3000 words or perhaps a bit more, but essay and dialogue writing is a bit different (dialogue not as ingredient in novel writing, but as writing my dialogues with intellectual opponents, like Socrates with Gorgias and so on).
@JennyMustard
@JennyMustard Жыл бұрын
3000 is amazing, those days really fry your brains don't they! and yes i've been over 5000k a few times. that 'writing retreat' week. mentioned, i did 5k words 5 days in a row, but i wouldn't recommend it for health!!! gosh!!
@hglundahl
@hglundahl Жыл бұрын
@@JennyMustard Actually, as I am writing quite a few dialogues with others - like if you don't mind me taking this dialogue to a blog - those days were days with many dialogues, and therefore the other party of each had written quite a lot of the words. So, it's not like 3000 words all by myself, my average is rather a bit above 2000.
