Had this happen to me, store was out of multiple items on list and I chatted with customer to replace, he approved all replacements and asked me to add about 10 items that he forgot to put on his list. Delivered to an apartment. Took pictures and screenshots of whole conversation because something felt off about him. An hour later saw the tip was gone and contacted support. Support told me he gave me a 2 star rating and said 13 items were missing???? I sent pictures of delivery and conversation. IC took off the 2 star rating and was very helpful. Shopper here! This happened to me last month…I don’t think customers always know we can see what they are tipping us! This woman I shopped for at Costco greeted me as requested at her garage and asked me to bring her items in to her garage. She seemed pleased and thanked me and then said something that struck me as odd. She said “I will make sure take care of your tip when I’m done putting away my groceries!” she said, with a smile. I thought maybe she was going to tip me extra, because I had already seen her tip in the app, which was why I took the batch in the first place! So later that day I checked to see how much extra she added and I saw that she took $2 away - for no reason! I communicated throughout the entire batch, was able to successfully find all of her items and was very friendly and helpful bringing her items in to the garage. I couldn’t help but think she was tip baiting to get her items sooner but didn’t think I knew how much she offered to tip me. It bothered me a lot because I would never do that to someone!! 🤷🏻♀️

The same customers also have either left a 5 star review or no review, giving no indication as to why they decided not to increase the tip. I treat every batch I accept as if the customer is tipping me 50 dollars or more. I understand that most people cannot afford to tip like that but if I accept a job I’ve made a judgement call. @@JENontheGO a lock would help prevent the percentage based tips from dropping. But I also do agree that it would be unfair to allow shoppers who don’t do a good job to be tipped the same as you would tip someone who gave great service. If our evidence showed that the items were present and intact at the time of drop off and they can see the communication was good between shopper and customer the poor rating should not be allowed and the tip should be held at what was initially promised. I'm so sorry that happened to you. Surely there should be a way for them to block/ban that customer. On the flip side, I wish they would add a "Tip in cash" option since a lot of shoppers don't even bother to read the notes (where I specify that the tip will be in cash, depending upon their level of communication with me). Sooooo many times I have had a tip locked in for 20% of my total and the shopper doesn't communicate AT ALL. So, when they deliver, I'm thinking they got everything only to have items missing! Oh, but they got that doggone tip, though - for the original total. Now I find out I could have changed it so I don't get ripped off! I can understand a customer changing a tip for that reason, but to purposely make a shopper think they're getting a tip only to have no intention of doing so is just unethical! It makes one wonder how they are with other people because if they're conniving with you, they'll be conniving with someone else, too.

Here’s the thing-when we are accepting an order we can’t see notes. So we can’t see that you’re planning to tip in cash. Also, when I’ve gone into an order after accepting I’ve seen notes saying they will tip in cash, but they have not. Additionally, one guy in my area tips in cash has these big expensive orders but when you unloading before he will hand you the tip he stands there and gives you a religious sermon and tries to recruit you for his church and wen he is finally done he hands you like 5 bucks. For a big order. Cash tips are not something we can ever, ever count on, but we do love it when they happen. The only thing I’ve seen happen is them having a moderate tip, like 10 percent, in the app and then them leaving an additional cash tip to make up the rest. As for the communication, do make sure you keep the app open, or it will not notify you that the shopper is trying to reach you. There have also been bugs where our apps have told us people do not want us to contact them. There’s a lot of different things. Also if you choose the percentage based tip and there are items that are missing (I.e. were not charged because they were out of stock or not found) then it actually auto adjusts because your tip is based on the percentage of the total price.
@tupperkenna3 жыл бұрын
Not sure how a shopper could just simply not buy an item on your list as the app does not let us checkout without getting every single item OR refunding the item. The only reasons a shopper would refund is there was not an adequate replacement available or the customer did not communicate and approve the replacements they selected.
@logicdiary31793 жыл бұрын
I feel like 24 hours is fsr too long for the tip. Give a small window, mere hours, to change it after delivery and make it so it has to be for a good reason like wrong items, melted ice cream, squished bread, etc. not just a way to entice the shopper to the order. I'd love to compare this to waitressing but waitresses don't use their car to bring you your burger. Cars are expensive so if you aren't going to get your own groceries in your own car, those who take the time to handle your order with care should be highly appreciated. If they don't handle the order with care, get instacart involved because maybe they don't just not deserve a tip, maybe this platform isn't right for them.

Thank you for your videos. I discovered you through a Facebook group in Canada. I actually think that we can contribute more in educating the costumers by letting them know how rating affect us. I personally word it out when I feel comfortable with a responsive costumer to let them know that 5 stars help A LOT. I may want to add a line stating that if the costumer feels that I don't deserve the 5 stars, they can skip the rating all together BECAUSE many shoppers relay on this job as the only source of income and that instacart rating system is very punishing them for just one star off. Surely it has to be a brief, clear and eloquent formulated message.

Tip baited a couple weeks back. She immediately removed a 20+ tip after I shopped, did replacement chats with her(she was fairy responsive & chatty), drove 10 over snowy twisty roads (the back country near Wausau WI). I delivered, drove a block to see if anything popped up & she had zero'd the tip. I was furious! Customer support was zero help. She has since done this to several others, the most recent was a 50+ item order, those slippery roads again & 10 miles one way with no real shopping opportunities in that small tow. The shopper got $9.53 for her pains I talk tough (stomping out "tip baiter" in the snow by her apartment, egging her patio door, perhaps write "tip baiter" with a stream of salt once the snow melts & the grass greens up. ) but in reality am not going to lose this nice side job gig.

Hey Jen, I really appreciate your information regarding tip bating and your positive attitude to work through it. I'm sure you as well as other shoppers are sick of being the casualty of giant companies and I know I am. As a shopper, I'm sick of getting ads on the app, for something I'm already paying for. Would you be interested sometime in helping developing an alternative open source software platform to Instacart? I'm a software entrepreneur looking for interesting problems that I care about and you exude passion and kindness on this channel.

From a customer perspective, I think if the customer changes the tip either way, they should always have to give a reason and if a customer has a pattern of tip baiting, if they reduce or remove the tip then the customer should at the very least be blocked from using the service for at least 90 days or permanently for too many repeats of this behabnior. Sometimes a customer might not be able to afford a huge tip though and it is unfortunate that a customer might have to cancel an order if no shopper picks their order because of a smaller tip.

I've been tip baited probably 3 times in 3 years. So at least it's only averaging once a year. The one I remember most was when I shopped/delivered a huge Costco order, drove 30 miles (one way), drove to the top of a mountain (literally). Everything went smoothly. The communication was great, I was fast and efficient, pulled out all the customer service stops, etc. Well, I was only a few minutes away from dropping off their order and heading back when I had this gut feeling to pull over and look at the order details. Sure enough, she had dropped the tip amount to almost nothing. That was just minutes after dropping off the order. Everything about it was obviously intentional on her part. I did lose sleep over it unfortunately. It was worth the time and gas before, but then after she did that, it was definitely not worth it, especially since it took me away from the good zones to catch an order. I did report her but I doubt anything ever came of it.

Solution: Give the customer 2 hours. If the customer has not figured out within two hours of the delivery weather they think the shopper deserves the tip or not , then that's their problem. Problem solved.

Tip baiting is totally unethical. However there are instances when a reversal of the tip is justified. I have actually done this before on a couple of occassions, even though it was not my original intent to do so. The first time, I had placed an order to be delivered at 12pm during my lunch break. It was about $35 worth of items and I placed the order the night before. Around 7:30am the next morning, I received a notification that my shop was in progress and by 8:15 it was ready for pickup. However the salmon that I ordered had been unexpectedly refunded. The shopper put in the notes that the seafood department was not open yet. Seriously? No one told you to start shopping at 7am, plus my pickup window wasn't until NOON. It was obvious that this shopper was being a little greedy and trying to squeeze in multiple orders at one time. The second time, I had placed an order for about $80 worth of groceries the night before to be delivered in the morning. My order arrived 3 hours late and the only thing delivered was the bottled water. I figured that the grocery store must've been out of my items, so I checked the order to see if there were any substitutions or refunds. Nada. Order showed that all of the items had been fully shopped. So then what happened to my groceries? I can understand one or two items being missed, but 95% of the order?

You touched on a lot of points today the thing that hits home the most was Instacart is not equitable and fair at this time. I was at a 4.98 working to get it back to 5 I took a nice 3 customer batch before my amazon block at delivery time the app fritzed the customers disappeared and I had to have support text me the addresses to deliver. The app fritzed because the addresses somehow didn’t match the order not only did I have angry customers they made me go back to a customer that had the wrong order just to have the customer tell me that Instacart already was reshooting the order this caused me to miss the amazon block which will probably result in deactivating me from the flex program as they have zero tolerance for that and I’m at a 4.94 getting crappy batches. They play with your money I contacted them and they did NOTHING!!! As hard as I’ve worked at it and as professional as I am this is incredibly discouraging.

I was shocked cause it was my first $40.77 batch for 2 orders that were fairly close to eachother so I took it. After I delivered it I looked at it only to see both customer A and B yanked the tip from me. Customer A tipped $10 and customer B tipped $12.50. Both yanked and I ended up with $18.27 for 38 items. I feel terrible. I'm really down right now. I don't have a gas saving vehicle. $18 isn't even half a tank for my car. My situation is tuff right now so instacart is my only source of income. I did my first Instacart delivery this morning, maybe I was excited and didn’t notice, but the customer left a very small tip and I had to drive quite a way to deliver to her, but I swore the tip was larger. Everything went well, I found all her items, delivered early, can’t imagine why she would change it. When people Uber or Lyft the tip is never taken away but you can choose to add more tip. That’s what Instacart should do. Well as i arrived and noticed the # was out of state and the out of state licence plates. I nicely asked if this was their summer home, well obviously that was a big mistake. With a glare and low voice i got a yes and i just said how nice and have a great day. Tip gone. Now I did report to instacart. I wouldn’t care if a customer who gave me a five star rating tip baited me. The five star rating to me is worth four times the value of the tip. Now, if I got an increased tip, but a below five star rating, I’d be furious. The logic behind that is because Instacart’s star rating system is so unfair to the shopper that without a perfect 5.0, you’re basically working your heart out for pennies anyways, so what’s the point? The thing that makes it as god-awful as it is is one primary thing: too often, customers do not leave a rating at all. If Instacart made it so that by default, every completed delivery resulted in an automatic five star rating for the shopper and only gave the customer 24 hours to change that rating or leave it the same, that one change could single-handedly increase the overall fairness of the rating system. The reason it sucks so much now is because Instacart requires 50 new five star ratings to replace a single bad star rating (1-4 star). Again, the emphasis is five star RATINGS, not 50 completed deliveries. That means you could possibly do an additional 218 batches (for example) after getting one two star rating a month and a half ago and only have 35 of those 218 customers leave a rating at all. God forbid one of them rates below 5, because that basically resets the 15 more five star ratings you’d need to 50 again.

As a shopper, I see both sides of this. Obviously, there are a lot of things outside your control and you shouldn't lose out on a tip based on that. I had an order that I had to refund nearly 20 percent of the items, when I normally average in the high 95-100 percent category. Obviously, it's not my fault that items were out of stock. Props to the customer though for not decreasing the tip amount. But then again, customers should have some control over how much they tip. It's considered complimentary after all. Why should a customer pay a tip if they suffer from extremely poor service? You aren't really owed that tip if you treat them like crap.
@wynters252 жыл бұрын
But you didn't when you let them know the options when items are out of stock I have had tips removed just because I had to refund an item now that's on instacart sometimes they have a percentage for each item option for tip that a customer can choose

The same thing happened to me a few days ago! Me and the customer had a great conversation at his door for about 10 minutes, he even gave me a $4 cash tip after asking if I take cash tips. I then looked back in the app and he took away the $16 tip he originally gave me, which was the only reason I took the order since he lived in the town over. Gave me a 5 star rating as well, I couldn't believe it

IMO it's more work for the shopper with the replacements and the char back and forth to fill the replacements. I feel tips should be more when we are doing more but so many times the customer wants to remove tips for these changes or just for the store being out of their item. Now the delivery person fault but we pay the price. Why can't they split the stars, have stars for the delivery and stars for the store separately?

I had a shopper argue about an address entering my house and telling me harshly, IN MY HOUSE, how I need to fix it! But other drivers had no issues! I just had surgery and got out of the hospital and I did NOT APPRECIATE IT! I yanked his tip! HE WAS DRAMA!!!!!! DONT DISRESPECT ME AND MY HOME!!!!!

Pizza delivery drivers get tips on almost every delivery. They didn't prepare the pizza, bake the pizza, or slice the pizza, yet they receive tips. They do generally drive personal vehicles though, and receive a guaranteed hourly wage. Personal shoppers on the instacart platform drive personal vehicles, do not receive a guaranteed hourly wage and personally shop for, scan and checkout then load and deliver groceries. All while keeping up a dialogue withe the customer, often times better than a server at a sit down restaurant. So, before tip baiting customers should ask themselves what an hour of their time is worth and apply the same worth to the shoppers time.

Hasn't happened to me yet but one of these days I'm sure it will I'm just glad that it's pretty rare. Thanks for the videos I suggest them when people reach out with questions.

Hi Destiny! Appreciate your support! So happy it hasn’t happened to you. I’m sure it won’t, as the bad customers are far and few in between! 💛
