Jen HST are an iconic past of British Railways as they were the work horse of the cross country network on especially the services from the north of England to the south west as I took them to Exeter St David’s to holiday with my granny during the Easter holidays. So I am a big fan of them and the new trains will not run for the years which the HST did . 8:05

Hey Jen, I am really enjoying this series from a part of the UK that I have never been able to visit. I want to congratulate you on the part you played in pressuring the idiots in government who have now had to bow to public pressure and reverse their decision to close ticket offices. You played an important part in clearly showing the stupidity of those who proposed the closures. I am proud of your commitment to rail travellers across the country. ❤

This is so adorable! The railways in Cornwall are so neat! They remind me of the branch lines we lost here in Iowa!

Wow, so interesting to see a non barrier crossing, certainly a rarity. Looe valley looks like a very quiet line to enjoy.

HST's are one of the finest train sets ever designed and built by British Rail. Superb comfort. Better than a 150, 158 and Pacer (!!).

Never really explored the Looe Valley Line properly, just took a train from Liskeard to Looe and took the same train back, in fact the train I took never went to Coombe Junction Halt! Bodmin Parkway have fond memories of that Station as it was ultra moist that day on a Friday in August 2019 and was vlogging a piece to camera on the footbridge and a wasp landed on my camcorder! It annoyed the hell out of me but ended up crushing it with the camera after lifting it up. It was still filming as well and took 10 minutes to deal with the wasp! Great video Jen and it was epic seeing Stu like a kid in a Candy Shop, Lostwithiel is good too and it great you got to visit that part before the signals get replaced and the signal boxes closes.
@dazzlingdaz187 Жыл бұрын
Most trains don't go to CJH though, just a couple a day. The story of the line going up from there to Liskeard is fascinating.

Hi Jen - Without romancing about the HST, all I know is that they provided a zillion percent more comfortable ride from Paddington to Penzance than the current Hitachi trains do. The new trains are cramped, its seats are very hard and there is no Bar & Buffet. I'd much rather travel by HST for 5 hours. Love your videos!
@xander1052 Жыл бұрын
tbh, I'd rather travel on a South Western Super Sprinter over most trains, due to just how comfy the seats are.

Great video, Jen. - although I strongly disagree with your opinion about HSTs - always prefer a loco hauled train; so much quieter! One day I want to visit and travel on the Looe Valley railway - my dad did teacher training in Looe in the 70s - it was February and march, it rained all the time, he didn’t drive and there was a train strike which closed the line while he was there - on our Cornish holidays, we never went to Looe because of it 😆

Isn't there an organ museum on the Looe line? (not a euphemism. Repeat, NOT A EUPHEMISM!) And Sandplace, if I remember correctly, used to have sand quarries right up to 1900ish.

Sandplace. A place where they store sand 😂. I did this line a few weeks ago, I didn't get out at the intermediate stops though just gazed in awe out of the window. I did walk down to Combe Junction Halt though, which is much better than walking up (as I presume you found out in the next episode..)

That open level crossing you saw was supposed to be upgraded to a half barrier crossing this year, though not sure where the plans for that went. The other open crossing on the line should be upgraded by next month, as are two AOCLs on the Gunnislake line

The HST was the best train this county has ever produced! My favourite train of all time, very comfy ride, quiet with not having engines under each carriage like modern trains & a buffet car. This county has gone backwards with the introduction of these new Hitachi rolling stock, they're god damn awful compared to the HST. Those castle sets you were on are being withdrawn soon, may of happened already as I can't remember the exact date but I believe it's happening this month (December) , it's going to be a sad day when they're finally gone forever from mainline operations although some units have been saved & operated by heritage lines.

Totally agree about the HST - 158 debate. I used to live on the London boundary. I much preferred taking a Stagecoach SWT 159 service to Exeter from Waterloo than an HST from Paddington. HSTs were fine until First-GWR refurbished them, and I'm talking long before the 80X or Castle sets were thought of. The airline seating with high back seats can be really claustrophobic. There are some seat locations where you can't see out of a window. The seat row is in line with a pillar, and the seats are so close with high backs, you couldn't see much beyond the seat in front. Horrible interior thanks to First. I only travelled on one journey like that, to Par. It was a busy service. It was just under an hours journey, but I couldn't wait to get off.
@Frostie367210 ай бұрын
Couldn't disagree more, for a number of years from 2010 I did frequent trips from weston down to St. Ives & travelled back the same day, that was around 8 hours sat on a HST, loved the trip every time I done it, very comfy ride & everything your moaning about I actually liked, who wants bus type seating on a long journey! Huge loss when the HST got replaced & now those castle sets are going (might be gone already). I've literally lost my interest in taking that trip now, I sure as hell wouldn't want to catch one of those abysmal Hitachi trains that's for sure. The 158 i would be my next choice for the same journey, I believe there's more 158s running into devon/Cornwall these days, gwr used to run 150s from the cardiff/Bristol to penzance services which is not suitable rolling stock for such a long journey imo. Used to catch 158s to do the same journey (was the Cardiff to penzance alphaline service if I recall) back in the 1990s, not as comfy as the HST but tons better than a 150!
