I just tried both options and here are some additional thoughts not obvious in this video: 1. Alnico blue is much louder, 20% louder. 2. Shockingly, Alnico blue, which I always equate with Vox AC30 high end chime of U2/The Edge, has a huge bottom end in a Tweed Deluxe! Jump the Bright 2 and Normal 1 channels and get massive bottom end. The cabinet has a beautiful, deep resonance at higher volumes. 3. If you go Alnico Blue, put a 12ax7 in v1 preamp slot. This speaker is way too harsh sounding with a 12ay7. Since the speaker is more efficient, you still have plenty of clean headroom with a 12ax7 in v1. 4. If you go with Jensen P12Q, go with 12ay7 in v1 preamp slot so that you have enough clean headroom. 5. Surprisingly for a 5e3, you can get great tone and chime when playing U2 Bad and Streets with either speaker, but especially with the Alnico Blue. 6. The Jensen can also produce a thick bottom end, just not as loud as the Blue Alnico. 7. The highs in the Jensen are sweeter and more glassy. To me it just sounds more like I expect a Fender to sound. AMAZING tone and fun to play SRV Lenny and Riviera Paradise (the primary reason for me trying the P12Q). And you can get the 12-watt amp cranking and resonating at reasonable volumes vs. an ear-splitting amp like the Super Reverb. 8. You can get Alnico Blue-like mids, punch, and volume by using a boost pedal with the P12Q. 9. And finally, you should invest the time and money to try it for yourself! Life long learning is to be had with a 5e3. Don’t squander the opportunity if you have one!

The Blue has more bass and low mids and rolls off highs more. Some would say it sounds muddy (I think so myself). With dirt it has a similar nasal quality as a V30 (which I really dislike personally). The Jensen sounded more balanced, brighter, chimier and would cut much better in a mix. The Blue got better with dirt but I still preferred the Jensen. With clean tones, it was the Jensen all the way, no contest. I'm sure both could be made to sound closer to the other with EQ. But I agree with another commenter about bass. More bass may sound "better" to us in isolation or in the room, but either live or in the studio, the sound person would cut that bass on the guitar tone anyway. It just muddies things up in a mix. Listening on very good quality headphones.

Wow. Quite a difference through my headphones. The Jensen is a clear winner for me. The Celestion sounds like it’s in another room with the door shut. I’m used to agreeing sounds are different rather than better or worse, but in this case I was surprised how poorly compressed the Celestion sounded to my ears. This video is another good example of how important it is to match sonic characteristics between amp and speaker, as I know they are both great speakers. Great video editing comparison. Thanks!

Both are great speakers. One thing that always befuddles me. On gear forums Jensen Ri speakers are portrayed as junk, but for some reason or another on the internet, sound as good or better than 90% of what they are being compared to. ( go do a search for yourself) either there is a huge bias against Italian speaker makers by people in the USA or there are a bunch of people who profess to know, but really don’t. (Personally I think its a little of both )

I have a DRRI amp and I really want to feel the Fender sparkle highs and clarity, that I think are missing with the ceramic speakers that I have tried. I play mostly clean and at bed room levels. I am thinking of getting a reissue Jensen P12Q. I use to have a darker rig, now I like bright, chime and definition tone, without being ice picky or harsh brittle highs. Many people find the DRRI a bright amp, but at least mine is not, is normal and I think it is time for a brighter speaker. Thanks

I have both and they are different for sure. The blue is in right now and it works really well in a band situation. What to consider is tough that the celestion is WAY louder and heavier. Probably keep the jensen tough since it also sounds nice, just different.
@HamzaVLOGs
@HamzaVLOGs 5 жыл бұрын
Important note about speaker efficiency: the sensitivity of the Celestion Blue is 100 dB (high efficiency; loud), whereas the sensitivity of the Jensen P12Q, which is also alnico, is only 94.4 (low efficiency; not as loud) ...I popped a Jensen P12Q in my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe yesterday, and now I turn the volume on the clean channel up to 5, where I used to have it on 2... for the same volume. The Celestion Alnico Blue is the same efficiency as the stock HRD speaker, so I think that accounts for a large part of the tonal difference we hear in the this test. They are both AlNiCo speakers, and will sound different, tonally, of course, but adjusting the volume so the Jensen is as loud as the Celestion would be very helpful.

Celestion having more low end presence definitely has more heft and fullness. No right or wrong of course, just preference. But the thing that stood out most to me is the efficiency differences. If you have a small low watt amp that isn't quite loud enough or needs a little help, Celestion might be your answer. Jensen would be better if you have an amp that's a little too loud when pushing to the edge of breakup. A little EQ trimming can have either sounding pretty darn close to the other IMO.

The Jensen does that sparkle thing as it should and the Celestion lets that little tweed grind almost as hard as a Marshall. I’ve used both and the Blue imho is the best speaker ever created. However Blues sound congested and have a thick midrange glare until they are sufficiently broken in. Then they chime and grind. That blue unfortunately sounded like it was right out of the box.

My immediate first impression was that the Jensen came off as being a quite new speaker. You mentioned that the Celestion was quite a few years old, and that the Jensen is what came in the amp. You didn't say how old the amp was, but the P12 has a lot of "freshness" to it still. That could account for some of the more present highs and slight fizziness once distortion levels got a bit high. The G12 had a more 'creamy' response to the clipped signals, but articulation seemed to suffer just a bit compared the the P12. I absolutely adore what the G12 can do - in the right amp. But the tweed circuit was designed to go with the P12's character, so that's when the amp sounds like it was mean to. A little tone adjustment or a graphic EQ could give the system the tweak to liven it back up. But it's just not going to sound like a traditional tweed. BUT - who says that it has to? A friend had an amp that gave him both his clean and dirty tones that he liked. Only, he liked each best with different speakers. So I designed a footswitch for him that would change the channels on the amp, and also switch the speakers (in separate cabinets) at the same time. (EVM12L for clean, G12M25W for dirty) Worked great!

The Blue is one of my all time favourite speakers, but it does not suit the 5E3 Deluxe as well as it does many other amps. This is a great video, and a great tool, but the way speakers react with microphones is very different from how they sound in the room. I have a handful of vintage Jensen P12Q's and a couple nicely broken in Celestion Blues, I also have a 5E3 Deluxe. I've done this comparison in person, and the Jensen really helps to clear up the 5E3 circuit. I'll take a Blue over a P12Q in 9 out of 10 amps, but in the 5E3 the Jensen wins. I should also add that new reissue P12Q's are very different sounding from their vintage counterparts. The vintage ones are warmer and much smoother. They are very easy to find since they were used in old PA systems and organs. They can typically be had for $130-$175... no need to buy a new one.
@MrAnders1976
@MrAnders1976 5 жыл бұрын
exactly ,, THe Jensen P12Q has a mid dip centered at 420Hz.. This match well with the flat frequency response of the 5e3 circuit. Not many celestions frequency profile match that amp circuit. A blackface fender is a diferent animal.. It has a 500Hz centered mid dip built in to the circuit. So most celestions sound pretty decent in a blackface deluxe but put a Jensen small magnet C12Q into a blackface deluxe and you get a really pretty clean scopped sound but not very loud and will get buried in the band compared to the heavy magnet C12K that has more mids than the C12Q

The thing to remember is that the Celestion blue is rated at 15 watts, so wired into a 30 or 40 watt amp it will distort/ compress earlier. It feels warmer than the Jensen, but I'd say neither is better than the other-just down to personal preference

A fender tweed deluxe 5e3 is a flat response amp,, (radio amp design),, and need a speaker to match it's frequency response., The P12Q EQ is a bit like a smiley face.. A big dip from 300Hz to 700Hz.... The celestion has a little larger dip in the high mids between 1kHz and 1.7kHz. This makes the P12Q a bit more open and the P12Q has more output at 100Hz relative to the celestion making it sound fuller..

For a speaker twice the price, the only real difference I’m hearing is the efficiency of the Celestion G12. Some of you need to understand just because a speaker is more efficient doesn’t mean the speaker is better.

A more efficient speaker is not as good if you want your amp to breakup at a lower volume.
@HamzaVLOGs

@@jdl2180 good point!!! A lower efficiency speaker will allow you to turn your amp up higher and get closer to the sweet spot at a lower volume!

clean sounds the jensen p12q by a long mile.. The 5e3 has no classic tonestack and a flat response from low to highs.. (hence a lot of mids).. So a mid scooped speaker like the P12Q is a good fit.. The alnico blue is better in a top boost VOX tonestack that hollows out the mids.

The Jensen has more highs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will fit better in a mix. When the whole band is rockin, the darker unit may fit better.

Jensen just sounds more musical...nicer harmonic content to the sound. Im surprised....thought the Celestion blue was a better speaker by reputation but it's not.

It is all about the amp. It's a Fender and the Jensen nails it. The Jensen has that scoop that works great with Fender. If you were doing a Marshall BluesbreakerI would pick a Celestion every time.Then the fat mids of the Celestion really work.

I liked the Blue? Sounded richer, but not as chimey. I have a Tweed Clone with the Blue. I would say for certain sounds, the 5e3 is really amazing. You can see why Fender tightened up the bass, and expanded the headroom. I think daisy chaining the 5e3 with a 12” loaded Princeton would be amazing! I’m more of a pushed low gain player. I love the warmth of the Deluxe, but sometimes want more clarity. If I’m doing high gain, it’s usually Fuzzface.

...now we should be able to find out which one is doing what in the mix ... ;) I guess that is where we have to dicide. Standalone the Jensen is alway the open sunshine type, while we most probably all have the tendency to tell the celestion it might please clean its nose ... still I like the celestion in real world surroundings. For clean stuff the Jensen seems the winner. Am i playing that clean ever? No :) (or I just plug into the mixer directly ... ;) )

Man, I hope people don’t catch on to the Jensons , I’ve been using jenson speakers in my fender , vox and Marshall’s for years. Some of my older ones are really special, feels totally different. Cranked, major overtones.

Killer video. Been waiting to hear what that Jensen sounded like. The celestion sounded superior though. It just has a way of absorbing those bad frequencies and making the amp sound it's best.

jensen is more midrange boost high pass cut / celestion is more mid scooped open top treble more in fizz side. p.s. some speakers tend to break up naturally in different volumes my guess those together would sound like million bucks ;) 2x12 cab
