Rainbow coloured polymer plastic banknotes and coins featuring iconic Canadian symbols helps to set Canadian money apart from other currencies around the world. In today’s English lesson you will learn all about Canada’s money while improving your English vocabulary and knowledge of Canadian history and culture!
Canada has five coins now, but we used to have six different coins. This lesson will talk about all six Canadian coins. Queen Elizabeth II is on the heads side of each coin, and the tails side features a picture of something connected to Canada:
1. 1¢: We used to have a one cent coin called a penny. It was made of copper and had maple leaves on the back. The government of Canada stopped making pennies in May 2012.
2. 5¢: A five cent coin in Canada is called a nickel. Nickels in Canada have a picture of a beaver on the back.
3. 10¢: A dime is the smallest coin in Canada, but it is worth ten cents. There is a picture of a special boat called the Bluenose on the back.
4. 25¢: Twenty-five cents is 1/4 of a dollar. As a result, twenty-five cent coins in Canada are called quarters. There is a picture of a caribou on the back of most quarters.
5. $1: We have a dollar coin in Canada. There is a picture of a loon on the back of the Canadian dollar coin, so we called it a loonie.
6. $2: There are also two dollar coins in Canada. A two dollar coin is called a toonie. There is a picture of a polar bear on the back of a toonie.
Currently Canada has five different banknotes. Canadian banknotes are made of polymer plastic. This video talks about the famous person on each of the five Canadian bills, as well as the section of the Canadian parliament building visible in the holographic section of the money. The back of each denomination features a picture of something connected with Canada’s history and Canadian culture:
1. $5: The Canadian five dollar bill features former Prime Minster Sir. Wilfried Laurier, the West Block of Parliament, and images connected to Canada’s contribution to the International Space Station.
2. $10: The ten dollar bill includes Canada’s first Prime Minster Sir. John A. Macdonald, the Library of Parliament, and pictures connected to the Canadian Pacific Railway and British Columbia joining confederation.
3. $20: Canada’s twenty dollar bill has Queen Elizabeth II, Parliament’s Peace Tower, and images of the Vimy Ridge Memorial and Poppies.
4. $50: A fifty dollar Canadian bill features former Prime Minster William Lyon Mackenzie King, the Centre Block of Parliament, and depictions of Canada’s work in the Arctic.
5. $100: The hundred dollar bill in Canada includes former Prime Minster Sir Robert Borden, the East Block of Parliament, and images connected to Canada’s medical innovation.
In addition to learning about Canada’s money, you will also learn English words to improve your vocabulary, and learn a lot about Canadian history and Canadian culture.
By the end of today’s English lesson you will have learned all about Canada’s money and improved your English. Thank you for watching, “Canadian Currency: Learn about Canadian Money! Banknotes and Coins!” I hope this English vocabulary lesson will be useful for you as you enjoy learning about Canadian cash and Canadian culture. Have fun while you improve your English and learn about money in Canada. Good luck with your English studies!

Question of the Day: Please tell me something interesting about the money in your county. (For example: What is the name of your currency? Do you have any special names for your coins like we do in Canada? Who/ what is on the heads and tails side of your coins? What / who is on the banknotes in your country? ) I look forward to learning a bit about your country's currency. 💸

I'm from the Dominican Republic, the name of our currency is the Peso (Dominican Peso, DOP), we do not have cents coins. We have one, five, ten, and twenty-five peso coins. We also have 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 peso banknotes, each denomination with a different color. We had a twenty-peso banknote that was made of polymer, but since the others were made of paper, the twenty-peso one would take the rest out of your pocket, it was very funny until you lost your money on the street, that's why they stopped doing them.

@@MrMAIRENEE That's very interesting! 🤗 Thank you so much for sharing about money in the Dominican Republic. 🇩🇴 I am very surprised that they made a 20 peso banknote while there is a 25 peso coin. I've never heard of a country having one of their coins be more valuable than one of their banknotes. 😄 Also sorry to hear that people lost money due to having one polymer banknote while the rest were still paper. I hope that didn't happen to you personally. 💸 I am curious though as to why they stopped making the polymer banknote and just continue with paper banknotes...wouldn't it make more sense to convert all banknotes to polymer since polymer banknotes last longer and are more secure (so in the long run it would save the government more money) ? 🤔

One rupee is equal to 54 (approximate) Canadian dollar. In our bank notes only one man, that is "Mahatma Gandhi". We called him as "Father of our nation". I want to know one thing from your video, that is , whitch language is in the subtitle of your video other than English language?

What I love about the Loonie is that the general public named the dollar coin , not the government. When it was first introduced, there were a lot of protests about replacing the dollar bill by a coin; people called it a loony(crazy) idea and started to. call the coin a Loony. The nickname stuck, and the name Loonie was then officially given to the coin.

Hi Rosemary☺️. Thanks for your nice comment and for sharing that interesting bit of trivia about when the Loonie was first introduced🇨🇦. I was only 1 year old at that time, but it seems odd that people would have thought it was such a crazy idea...coins last much longer than banknotes😅.

With plastic bank notes in Canada now, I'd love to see them return to a one dollar bill. True, we don't use cash that much anymore, but when you do, it's a lot easier to carry a bunch of one dollar bills versus coins, especially if you're a guy since you won't have a purse or a wallet with a coin purse attached. Keeping coins rattling around in your pocket is annoying and quite often they can fall out.

Thanks for your nice comment and feedback, Rishabh ☺️🇨🇦. Actually, although the Canadian Mint produces 50 cent coins, they are not widely produced or distributed and are rarely used in circulation. Since the early 2000's this coin is only able to obtained by directly purchasing it from the Mint. The half dollar coin is mostly only a collector's item and not a coin seen in daily life in Canada. Personally, I have never seen a 50 cent coin except for at the Mint in Ottawa 😅.

What I found very interesting about the Canadian currency was about 11:11 because what represents it in the esoteric. On the other hand, my country Ecuador is a dollarized country, it was dollarized on the 1999 bank holiday due to economic instability, political corruption and how over-indebted the country was with the Jewish bank Rothschild (International Monetary Fund) prior to that we had the Sucre and as the main figure that would be equivalent to Queen Elizabeth in Canadian currency, we had the "liberating" mason Simon Bolivar. Thank you for your informative and interesting video, it helps to know more things about canadian everyday life as well as learning English! I have a question, I'm sorry if you already explained that in one of your videos, but apparently in Canada when you go to the supermarket taxes are not indicated on the price of the product. So how do you do to predict what exact price you are going to pay for at the end ? Do the taxes depend on the province or territory, how do you do if you don't have your cellphone to calculate if you have several products ? Doesn't seem easy ^^
@JeNsJyugyou

Thanks for your comment and interesting question, Abby 🤩. You're right, when you are shopping in Canada, the price if the item doesn't include tax. I am terrible at math and can rarely predict the exact price I'll need to pay for an item. It isn't easy to figure out. I'm not sure about all of Canada, but in Ontario we used to have two types of taxes when paying for items. We had GST (Goods and Services Tax) and PST (Provincial Sales Tax). But now for the most part since 2010, the taxes are now combined into one tax called HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) which is + 13%. In addition, not everywhere in Canada is the same. Our provinces and territories have different tax rates when purchasing items which range from 5% - 15%. 🇨🇦 I hope that helps. 🤗

I'm American, but one thing that I learned in Montréal is the French names of Canadian coins: a penny is un sou, a nickel is un cinq-sou, a dime is un dix-sou and a quarter is un vingt-cinq sou.
@marie-michellefortier2993
@marie-michellefortier2993 8 ай бұрын
Although in Quebec we can say "sou/sous", many will also use "cent/cents" depending on the sentence and which word they prefer to use. "Cent/cents" is the most formal of the two. However, in Quebec, we usually pronounce "cent/cents" as "cenne" ([sɛn] or "senn" if it's easier to understand) and turn it into a feminine word when singular or when it's plural to mean "my coins/money" ("cenne" is a familiar word). 😊 E.g., Un sou = One cent (masculin noun) Un cent = One cent (masculin noun) Une cenne = One cent (feminine use, familiar word) Mes cennes = My coins (feminine use, familiar word) Un 10 sous = A 10-cent Un 10 cents = A 10-cent Un 10 cennes = A 10-cent

Hello🤗. Yes, I am an English teacher in Canada, but I spent four years teaching English in Japan. I try to add Japanese subtitles to my lessons to help Japanese people studying English. The bell sound effect at the end of the video is the same school bell sound that is used at the end of the school day in Japan to signify that school is finished. I thought it would be a neat touch and I am happy you picked up on it. 😁

Hi can we trade? some USA currency for Canadian currency? Here in USA it's called obverse and reverse for coins. We have the beautiful park quarters I think you know about that. But there's some 2003 quarter errors that have double dies and proof like in circulation. So this proof like quarters are for mint government sets only. But few when on circulation with p mint mark and d mint mark.

I’m American and have never even Heard rumors of the 04 quarter also Canada is the usas biggest allly we are littlerly stuck together lol if there was concern it would have been some country other than Canada was trying to spy i love Canada coins fun fact the dime is the smallest coin in both Canada and the USA due to the fact they were made of sliver till 64-68 thus they had to be smaller as to not be worth more in metal when the sliver was taken out the size was not changed dispite the metal value being much less both countries also used a half dime which were tiny and offen not popular they were easily lost and thus the base metal 5 cents came about mostly in the us due to the civil war and later rising sliver in Canada and people wanting a bigger coin both issued war nickels and took nickel out of the nickel for tank armor

Your denominations are very similar to ours in the UK, expet we dont have 25, but 20. Here 'Loonie' is short for lunatic (luni) made me laugh. I'm also surprised you don't have the famouse Canadian Geese, here they are an advert for Canada when they migrate here every winter.

Hi Ashiko 🤗. That's interesting, thanks for sharing about money in the UK ✨. Actually you have a very excellent point about Loonie because there used to be a show with Bugs Bunny called 'Looney Tunes' and I believe that spelling of Looney meant crazy 😆. You're right, Canadian geese have always been a symbol of Canada and yet they aren't currently featured on any of our money. When I was a child there used to be a Canadian goose on the back of the 100 dollar bill, but our bills have changed quite a few times since then. I think they should feature on some of our currency again ☺️✨🇨🇦.
