My name is Jens Larsen, Danish Jazz Guitarist, and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.
The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

Being in the key and being in the scale is not the same. If you listen to this then you can also hear that it does not modulate to another key even if some of the chords in there are not in the scale. Just like Cmaj7 A7 Dm7 G7 is clearly in C major even if there is no A7 in C major. Does that help?

I guess what you mean by “C major” is that that tonal center is a c major chord, despite the use on non diatonic movements. I can get down with this, but I feel like you gotta be hip a bit, the average person probably doesn’t understand what you mean when you say F# is part of c major.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Жыл бұрын
I am indeed talking about the key, not the scale. Seems to me that the video does a very good job at opening people's minds to the fact that there is a difference. There is no better way to learn than to hear it and then have to think about it, and I do feel that the concept of key is a bit underrated and overlooked given how powerful it is.
@spacemanspliff7844
@spacemanspliff7844 Жыл бұрын
@@JensLarsen this is something i hadn’t entirely put together, but now that you mention it that way, I had a few things click, this is the key to really understanding modal interchange and the use of non diatonic harmony in a key. The concept of “key” seems to me to be understood traditionally as relating to the scale, but I can see what you mean. Thanks for sharing the insight.

Love it ❤. That chromatic G-F#-F bassline is so satisfying. I feel as if there are many ways to interpret where the F# comes from. How do you interpret it? Chromatic passing tone to the borrowed Fm chord? A moment of Lydian? Blues note? All of the above?

@@JensLarsen isn’t that the definition? Scale is key, key is scale? A #IV(7) in C would include 1 (F#), 3 (A#), 5 (C#), 7 (E), all of which are outside the key except E. What am I missing? (scratches head)
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Жыл бұрын
@@JustinTrudeau1971 Your ears can tell you, right now you are listening with your eyes and theory. If you sit down and play Cmaj7 A7 Dm7 G7 then you feel that A7 is a modulation and you hear that as another key? Or if a Gospel or Country song goes C C7 F F#dim C/G then it is modulating to another key or is it just moving around in the key of C major? I think you can hear that a modulation is something else, try listening to the first A section of All The Things You Are for a modulation, or Gone With The Wind. That is really something else than a single chord that doesn't fit in the scale.
